iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 out with new emoji, wallpapers and bug fixes

Apple has officially begun seeding its iOS 14.2 and iPadOS 14.2 updates for compatible iPhones and iPads. The update aims to iron out bugs from the previous releases while also adding over 100 new emoji, 8 new wallpapers and support for Intercom on HomePod.

HomePod’s Intercom feature allows households to send out voice messages recorded on their iPhone or iPad to connected HomePod speakers. You can also send out voice messages from your Apple Watch, AirPods and even from CarPlay.

Apple is also bringing plenty of bug fixes across the Camera, Photos, Voice memos and Weather apps. The AirPlay menu also received a redesign. Users on the latest iPad Air now get Scene Detection in the Camera app as well as Auto FPS for improved low light capture and file size management.

Alongside the iPhone and iPad updates, Apple also released watchOS 7.1 for Apple Watch which brings support for HomePod Intercom, headphone audio warnings and unlocks the native ECG app in South Korea and Russia.

This is a good time to refresh yourself with what iPhones are 11 mini and 12 Pro Max, and remind you what amounts Apple has priced the equipment in question.

Apple iPhone 12 mini is the smallest representative of the series that looks like a “thumbnail” of the basic iPhone 12. Apple’s MagSafe Duo charger will cost $129, but there’s no release date yet

Preorders for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max are officially live, and with it, Apple has also offered more pricing and release information on the next wave of iPhone 12 accessories, including the MagSafe Duo charger and the leather cases for the new phones.

The MagSafe Duo has officially gotten a $129 price tag, which includes the charger itself (that can charge both an Apple Watch and an iPhone 12 at the same time) and a 1-meter-long USB-C to Lightning cable. Not included in that price is a power brick, although Apple recommends that you buy its own 20W USB-C power brick for an extra $19. And while Apple has updated the product page, there’s still no release date or preorder option — just a note that the charger is “coming soon.”

Given that a regular MagSafe charger costs $39 (plus $20 for the brick) and a USB-C Apple Watch charger costs $29 (plus $20 for the brick), you’re paying a fair amount extra for the convenience factor, although compared to the existing $79 Apple Watch charging dock that Apple sells, there’s at least a little more utility for the price.

Similarly, the new leather sleeve case option has also gotten a $129 price (which is the same whether you’re buying it for the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 / 12 Pro, or the iPhone 12 Pro Max). It’ll come in four colors — blue, pink, brown, and red — and offer both an interior pocket to store a credit card and a matching wrist strap. The leather sleeves also work with MagSafe wireless charging, so you’ll still be able to recharge your phone even when it’s stowed away. Like the MagSafe Duo, it’s also listed as “coming soon,” with no firm release date.

If you’re looking for an iPhone accessory you can buy today, Apple has released its leather case options for the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 / 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max — notably the only leather cases available right now that feature support for Apple’s new MagSafe charging system. All three sizes of the case will cost $59, and come in blue, yellow, brown, black, and red color options.

HomePod mini, iPhone 12 Max Pro and iPhone 12 mini pre-orders open today

The wait is (almost) over, Apple fans. Pre-orders for the HomePod mini, iPhone 12 Max Pro and iPhone 12 mini open today from 1pm GMT / 5am PT / 8am ET, or midnight Saturday 7th November AET time.

The two iPhones will arrive to pre-order customers next Friday (13th November), while the miniature HomePod will be available the following Monday (16th November).

The HomePod mini is a smaller (3.3in tall) and cheaper (£99/$99) version of the existing HomePod, essentially combining streaming and Siri voice assistant into a more compact and accessible form. That’s a proven package we are bound to get on with, but the jury’s out on whether it will it impress in the sound department like its sibling does.

The iPhone 12 mini, meanwhile, is essentially the iPhone 12 scaled down to an iPhone SE-like, 5.4in-screen form factor, available from £699 ($699, AU$1199) for the 64GB variant. It also comes in 128GB (£749, $749, AU$1479) and 256GB (£849, $849, AU$1449) versions.

Like the new iPhone 12, it boasts an industry-leading IP68 rating for water resistance, meaning you can submerge it in up to six metres of water for up to 30 minutes. Keeping the screen safe is something Apple refers to as a ‘Ceramic Shield’, which is apparently tougher than any smartphone glass. The company says it’s four times more likely than the iPhone 11’s screen to survive a fall without cracking.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the flagship handset, priced from £1099 ($1099, AU$1849) for the 128GB model. There’s also 256GB (£1199, $1199, AU$2019) and 512GB (£1399, $1399, AU$2369) options. Essentially it’s a larger version of the iPhone 12 Pro, sporting a 6.7in display compared to its sibling’s 6.1in screen real estate.

Huawei nova 8 SE announced with 64MP quad camera, 66W fast charging, and 5G support

Huawei introduced the nova 7 SE back in April, and after more than six months, the company has announced its successor, dubbed nova 8 SE.

The nova 8 SE is just 7.46mm thick, weighs 178 grams, and has a design largely reminiscent of the iPhone 12 with flat frames and squircle-shaped island on the back. The latter hosts a 64MP primary camera, 8MP ultrawide unit and two 2MP modules for macro and depth information.

The nova 8 SE is built around a 6.53″ FHD+ OLED display that has a waterdrop notch for the 16MP selfie camera. It also has a fingerprint scanner underneath for biometric authentication and supports HDR10.

Under the hood, the nova 8 SE has a Dimensity 720 chipset, but there’s also a High Edition that has Dimensity 800U at the helm. Both variants come with 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and run Android 10-based EMUI 10.1 out of the box.

Keeping the lights on is a 3,800 mAh battery which is smaller than the current industry standards, but it supports 66W charging, which promises to juice up the cell from flat to 60% in 15 minutes and 100% in another 20 minutes.

The rest of the highlights of the Huawei nova 8 SE include a USB-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.1, dual SIM support, and dual-band Wi-Fi.

Both the Dimensity 720 and Dimensity 800U-powered models of the nova 8 SE support 5G networks, but the High Edition offers 5G connectivity on both SIMs, whereas the Standard Edition supports the next-gen network only on the primary SIM.

The Huawei nova 8 SE has four color options and will go on sale in China from November 11. The Standard Edition is priced at CNY2,599 ($390/€330) and the High Edition will set you back by CNY2,699 ($410/€345).

Sizing up the iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max

Apple’s iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are the “default” size iPhones this year. But Apple also has two more new devices: the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max. One is Apple’s smallest iPhone in years — and the other is its biggest iPhone ever.

Here’s a first look:

iPhone 12 mini

If you’ve seen the iPhone 12 already, it’s basically that, but smaller. Same processor, same cameras, same design, same everything. But instead of a 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone mini has a 5.4-inch display.

But thanks to the iPhone X-style bezel-less design, the 12 mini is actually a physically smaller phone compared to the bezeled, 4.7-inch design that Apple has used on the iPhone 6, 6S, 7, 8, and the new version of the SE.

And by the standards of 2020 flagship smartphones, it’s really small.

The 12 mini is also Apple’s lowest-priced new iPhone, starting at $729. Compare that to last year, where the least expensive new iPhone was the 6.1-inch, $699 iPhone 11: to get a more compact iPhone 11 Pro (which, at 5.8 inches, was Apple’s smallest 2019 model) you had to shell out a whopping $999. The 12 mini, on the other hand, offers a compact size with a smaller price tag.

And that smaller size is really nice to hold. iOS scales well to the 5.4-inch display, and the iPhone 12 design looks and feels just as nice on the slightly more compact version as it does on the full-sized model. If you liked the size of the the old 5 / 5S / SE, though, the 12 mini feels like the closest Apple has come to that style of device in a long time.

It’s honestly a bit weird to hold at first, especially if you’re coming from a big phone. Some things do take a bit of an adjustment, like typing — but other parts of using an iPhone, like swiping down from the top of the display for notifications or the control center, are easier than they’ve been in years. But for the first time since arguably the iPhone 8, Apple has made a flagship phone that nearly anyone should be able to comfortably use and hold in one hand.

There are some concerns: the smaller physical size means that the mini has a smaller battery, which could translate to lower battery life, too — especially with 5G in the mix. We’ll have more on that, along with a much more comprehensive look at the 12 mini, once we’ve done a full review.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

On literally the other end of the spectrum is the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which — with a 6.7-inch display — is the biggest phone Apple’s ever made. It’s also the most expensive model in this year’s lineup, starting at $1,099.

And it is big, bigger than both Apple’s older iPhone Plus models and last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max in terms of sheer size. The 12 Pro Max benefits from the same squared-off design as the smaller iPhone 12 models, meaning that it’s not as big of an increase as the bump in screen size might suggest.

But unlike the mini, which is just a smaller version of the 12, there are bigger (pun intended) differences between the standard 12 Pro and its Max counterpart: Apple is taking advantage of the extra space to debut a whole new camera system, including a much bigger sensor and a new telephoto lens. Given how good the regular iPhone 12 and 12 Pro’s cameras are, that’s exciting.

We’ll have a lot more on that new camera — and how it compares to the standard 12 and 12 Pro — in our full review, so stay tuned for that, too.

As for how the 12 Pro Max is to actually use and hold, it’s still very much a surfboard of a phone, just like Apple’s other Plus and Max-sized devices. Looking at it on its own is somewhat deceptive, since it’s proportionally similar to the regular-sized models. It’s only when you see it in context next to another iPhone that the scale of it really hits you.

Despite the big size, it doesn’t feel too heavy in hand: I’d describe it as comfortably solid, although between the steel frame and the size, it’s not the sort of thing that I’d want to drop on my face, either.

Plus, while the screen size on the 12 Pro Max is bigger than ever, Apple still isn’t doing much to take advantage of the larger display. There’s no option to run apps side by side, like many supersized Android phones have, and it still seems like Apple is scratching the surface when it comes to utilizing the extra space. Right now, using it just feels like using a regular iPhone that’s been scaled up.

The iPhone 12 mini and Pro Max pre-orders open tomorrow in more than 30 countries

Tomorrow Apple starts accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 12 mini and Pro Max in Australia, China, Germany, India, Japan, the UK, the US and 30+ other countries. Pre-ordered phones will start shipping on November 13 (Friday next week), which is also when the first units will be available in stores.

Would be buyers in Brazill, South Korea and 25 other countries will have to wait a bit longer, pre-orders for them begin on November 20 and sales start a week after that, November 27.

Keep in mind that stores – both virtual and real ones – will be pretty crowded. If you’re ordering online, you can jump to the front of the queue by signing up for the Upgrade Program (you have until 9:00 PM today to get approved).

A note to Brits: as the UK is on lockdown, all Apple stores in the country are closed today and will re-open tomorrow for a click-and-collect service. However, since signing up for the iPhone Upgrade Program requires entering the store, that service is temporarily halted.

Anyway, the HomePod Mini smart speaker will also be available tomorrow in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Spain, the UK and the US, however, the actual speakers will arrive a few days after the iPhones – November 16. China, Taiwan and Mexico will get the speaker later this year.

Qualcomm posts impressive quarterly results, boosted by Apple 5G chip orders

Qualcomm has been investing heavily into 5G chips and it’s now reaping the benefits. The San Diego chip company posted its fiscal results for the three months ending on Sept 27 and its full fiscal year, revealing an increase in profit and sales both on a quarterly and yearly basis.

The company didn’t name specific reasons, but Reuters revealed Apple’s 5G phones were the key driver behind Qualcomm’s success.

Revenue of the company’s chip segment was $4.97 billion, surpassing the estimates of $4.59 billion. Qualcomm Chief Executive Steve Mollenkopf revealed the contribution from new clients was small – most of the income came from already established partnerships.

Qualcomm said it shipped 162 million chips capable of wireless data connections during the fiscal quarter.

Analysts expect further boost in the next quarters – $5.71 billion predicts FactSet, while the company is setting an even higher bar – around $6.2 – $6.8 billion. Overall shipments of 5G devices in 2020 are expected to be around 175 million to 225 million, with expectations in 2021 the number to go up to 500 million.

Mollenkopf also shared that Qualcomm has applied for licenses to deliver chips to Huawei, but the United States government hasn’t responded yet.
