Some images of the unedited version of the old Apple smartphones have been published online. You can find them in this article

One unedited version of iPhone 5s appeared online through some photos posted on the Twitter account @DongleBookPro. The one depicted in the photos is probably a prototype built by Apple before the product launch in a black color never released to the public .
iPhone 5S was launched at September 2013, introducing for the first time in the Apple smartphone line the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, a 64 – bit and a dual LED True Tone flash. The smartphone used a single photo module with five-element f / 2.2 optics, a larger sensor for the camera than its predecessor, and slow-motion mode for video recording (at resolution 720 pe 120 fps).
Lo smartphone was proposed only in the variants Space Gray, Silver and Gold , colors appeared for the first time in the line -up, while iPhone 5 – which enjoyed an extremely similar design compared to its successor – was proposed in White and Silver and Black and Slate . According to the source, however, Apple has never thought of reviving the Black and Slate also on the iPhone 5s , but he made the first prototypes with the old color to camouflage them during development.
It is curious to note that the iPhone 5s in the photo was made in December 2012, three months after its predecessor’s launch and nine months before its commercial debut. Together with the disclosure of the first rumors about the new models, this news helps to understand how long the development cycle of the new products is before they are released to the public. From iPhone 5s onwards Space Gray has supplanted Black and State on almost all subsequent iPhones: the only ones not to propose this color were in fact iPhone 7, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 (is 12 Pro).
Black and State was instead a fleeting presence among the colors of the iPhone, despite the beauty of the finish and elegance perceived by sight and touch. Popular on iPhone 5, fifth generation iPad mini and fifth generation iPod touch, the finish was immediately revealed extremely delicate and prone to show signs of wear of all kinds, including including scratches and dents, with evident loss of the surface paint . Perhaps for this reason Apple has decided to eliminate it from the iPhones immediately after the first implementation on the iPhone 5.
Like the idea of a foldable iPhone? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that according to Bloomberg, Apple has started prototyping foldable screens. At this stage, it’s only the display that Apple has started work on, not the body, so a consumer model is likely still years away, but it bodes well for a foldable future.
It would see Apple follow rivals such as Samsung, Motorola, LG, Huawei who already have folding smartphones on sale.
Apple’s entry into a category is generally seen as its mainstream moment. The Apple Watch saw a surge in interest in wearables, for instance, as did the AirPods for wireless earbuds.
According to the report, Apple is working on foldable screens with a “mostly invisible hinge” that could unfold to around the size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max. However, the firm is currently considering multiple different screen sizes.
One of the biggest advantages of foldable screens is that they can offer a tablet-esque experience from a device that fits in your pocket. That could make it better for watching films and playing games, as well as seeing detailed views of apps such as maps.
Foldable phones have had a rocky start, with certain models breaking during testing. Apple is undoubtedly watching the competition with interest and will want to do its own extensive testing before deciding whether to launch its own model.
A foldable iPhone won’t launch any time soon, however. This year’s iPhone 13 is expected to have just “minor upgrades” according to the same report. One such upgrade could be an under-screen fingerprint sensor. This would allow fingerprint authentication for unlocking the screen and verifying payments. Apple did away with the home button and its built-in Touch ID fingerprint authentication when it launched the iPhone X in 2017.
What else can we expect this year? Apple is reportedly considering removing the Lightning socket in favour of wireless charging on some iPhone models, its AirTags tracking tags should launch, and it’s rumoured that there are two new iPads on the way – the new iPad Pro could have a Mini LED screen, while the entry-level iPad would be slimmer than the current iPad (2020).

There will be an important renewal among the Apple products and the 2021 will surely be a year to remember for the company that will not only prepare new revolutionary M1 chips also on new products but will completely renew the design of these by adding new types of devices. There is talk of iMac, Mac Pro Mini and even the foldable iPhone.
by Bruno Mucciarelli published 18 January 2021 , at 10: 01 in the Apple channel Apple iMac iPhone Mac Pro MacBook macOS
The 2021 will undoubtedly be an important year for Apple. Not only for the fact that it will use its own ” made in Cupertino ” processors in new products but also for the fact that these new products could be completely revisited in terms of design. And if that’s not enough, Apple seems to be ready to introduce a completely new design for iMacs, to make a new Mac Pro Mini similar to a Power Mac G4 Cube and still MacBook Pro 14 ” and 12 ” and dulcis in fundo? The new foldable iPhone.
Apple iMac with new design and more
Let’s start from them or from iMac of the future because they will most likely change more than others in this one 2021. As? The indiscretions of Gurman speak for themselves because according to the journalist, who increasingly proved to be a connoisseur of true information from Apple sources, next generation iMacs are coming with an aesthetic appearance practically in line with what is seen with the Pro Display XDR. This means that the design of iMacs that have been identical for too many years will revolutionize, and I would say finally. And Apple will probably bring it closer to what it did with the Mac Pro but above all with the Apple Pro XDR display that is square lines, flat rear body with the particular honeycomb texture and above all a display with frames really reduced to a minimum.
There are currently two codenames , J 456 and J 457, to testify the possibility that Apple still wants to offer users two versions based on the screen size in line with what we already know. What Gurman doesn’t know though is whether Apple will remain loyal to 21. 5 ” and 27 ” current or if new resolutions and even new design may question these versions. Already in the past there has been no lack of indiscretions on the possibility that the company changes from the current 21. 5 ” ai 24 “. Certainly the presence of new Apple Silicon SoCs that are likely to see different new variants, more powerful than the M1s that we have already known and appreciated. Moreover, here we are talking about a desktop device without a battery but with wall power and from this point of view it is clear that Apple will be able to benefit from a greater surface for dissipation and above all none power limitation as there will be no battery to keep active for hours and hours.
Apple Mac Pro Mini (like a Power Mac G4 Cube?)
There is also a lot of talk about a new version of the current Mac Pro. Not so much d i a new generation of the same model already presented and currently on the market but of a real new smaller model, less powerful but with a lot of versatility. Let’s talk about the possible Mac Pro Mini that Gurman names and that therefore could already be in Apple’s plans for this 2021. How will it be? You know the old Power Mac G4 Cube from a few years ago? It had a design that went down in history positively while otherwise it wasn’t Apple’s best product with a few too many problems.
In this case Gurman talks about the possibility that in Apple has been working for some time on a new project based on the fact that the new Apple M1 chips are products capable of reaching exaggerated potential but without overheating and above all without the need to necessarily study an exaggerated cooling system. So why not evaluate the idea of a compact product that is powerful and in some way in step with the times? A Mac Pro Mini might be just right compromise and perhaps with much enhanced M1 chips compared to the current ones.
Apple, however, could be cautious on the transition from Intel to Silicon especially for more powerful machines such as the Mac Pro. Here it is in this case Gurman himself also talks about the possibility that the Cupertino company can continue to make the Mac Pro always with an Intel processor but updated to new versions at least to get to 2022 in order not to have complete compatibility problems with the software.
Pro XDR display minus XDR?
They may arrive also new less powerful and less expensive Apple Pro XDR display models. In this case Gurman is talking about a less expensive model of Apple’s current Pro Display XDR presented with the Mac Pro a few years ago. In this case the will could be to combine it with the Mini version of the Mac Pro and therefore make this version of desktop PC more consumer and less ” Pro ”. We could go back a little to the size, economically speaking, of the old Apple Thunderbolt Display that has made history in the past years and has now actually left a major hole in the Apple catalog.
iPhone 12 S: with Touch ID below the display?
Gurman does not leave out even the new iPhones 12 S that is the new generation of devices that should arrive as every year during the month of September or October. In this case, the attention for the new generation of Apple smartphones goes not so much on the design which will practically remain identical to the current one but rather on the hardware with two novelties that could interest many. On the one hand, the Touch ID that may not so much return as we know it today is still present in some iPads and iPhones but rather a completely new Touch ID placed below the display. In most Android smartphones it has already been present for years while Apple had decided for an unlock with face recognition 3D (the famous Face ID).
With iPhone 12 S may return in vogue the Touch ID but with an invisible fingerprint sensor. Certainly the use of the masks have somewhat angered iPhone users who necessarily had to bypass the unlock with facial recognition by always entering the code manually. So, given that the pandemic could discourage freedom from masks for a long time, Apple is perhaps thinking of an alternative but equally safe way to unlock the iPhone. Perhaps reducing the upper notch that many still cannot completely digest.
Foldable iPhone: is Apple really thinking about it?
And then there is the idea of the foldable iPhone. Many have wondered if Apple is actually working on an iPhone with a display capable of folding or expanding. We have seen that all smartphone manufacturers in recent years have intensified their activities in the creation of a product that would fill a user need: that of having a smartphone that is compact in size but which, if necessary, could allow you to view more content thanks to an extension of the display.
Samsung, HUAWEI, Motorola and many others have thought of it. Apple certainly did not stand by and watch and if the need on the market is to also have a foldable iPhone, it is clear that next few years to see an iPhone with these features on the market. And Gurman mentions him in his indiscretions. It states that in Apple are already testing folding panels. Only these, however, at the moment and therefore it is not legitimate to expect such a product in the short term.
Apple has already confirmed that its next-generation MacBook Pros will use its own system-on-chips (SoCs). In addition to new SoCs, the new notebooks will receive a complete architectural overhaul both inside and outside, two reports claim. The revamp will reportedly include an all-new design, the return of a magnetic charger and a possible removal of Touch Bar.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with a good track record who covers Apple at TF International Securities, said in a new note to clients that Apple is working on two all-new MacBook Pro models. One has a screen that’s “about” 14 inches and the other is 16 inches display, the analyst said, according to MacRumours.
Kuo said the new systems due to be launched in 2021 will feature a ‘flat-edged form factor” with no curves on top and bottom. That would make it resemble an resemble iPhone 12 and Mac Mini.
The upcoming MacBook Pros are also returning to a magnetic charging connector similar to the MagSafe connector that Apple used from 2006 to 2016, according to Kuo as well as a report from Bloomberg citing two independent sources.
MagSafe was praised by many as it attached to a PC magnetically, which helped to prevent breaking laptops because of an accidental dragging of the power cable. The new iteration of MagSafe is also said to charge MacBook Pros faster. Meanwhile, it is unclear whether it will still be possible to dock and charge the new systems using a single Thunderbolt 3/4 cable.
When Apple switched to Thunderbolt 3/USB-C-only ports on MacBook Pros in 2016, it received a lot of criticism from professional users who had to buy additional docking stations in order to get their DisplayPort, HDMI, GbE and USB Type-A connectors back. Kuo said that the new systems will be “equipped with more types of I/O” that will be sufficient for “most users” but did not elaborate.
Another controversial technology introduced by Apple in 2016 was the Touch Bar. It replaced top row physical Function keys with an OLED touchscreen that dynamically changes its set of controls based on context and currently used software.
Bloomberg reported that Apple has tested versions of its upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros without the Touch Bar. This could mean that Apple was merely thinking about its removal or even considering offering MacBook Pros with and without it. By contrast, however, Kuo claimed that Apple has decided to get rid of its Touch Bar and return to physical keys.
The overhaul of MacBook Pro laptops could be a result of Jony Ive’s departure from Apple in 2019. Ive was responsible for industrial design of Apple’s devices from 1992 to 2019 and for the company’s human interfaces from 2012 to 2019. Ive’s minimalistic designs have earned many accolades, but the removal of ports and keys wasn’t appreciated by all MacBook users.
The reports from Bloomberg and Kuo cite anonymous sources familiar with what Apple is currently testing. While typically such sources can be accurate, testing activities do not always represent final products. That said, such reports should be taken with a grain of salt.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest and best iPhone ever made, but it is now only marginally better than the standard iPhone 12
For
Huge, beautiful screen
Surprisingly capable speakers
Excellent sound via headphones
Against
Marginal gains over iPhone 12
No bundled charger
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best phone that Apple has made. It has the biggest and best screen, the best camera and the longest-lasting battery. So that’s the review over, right? Not quite.
No phone lives in a vacuum, and while the iPhone 12 Pro Max sits at the pinnacle of the current iPhone range, the competition is better than ever, particularly if picture and sound quality are of paramount importance. What’s more, Apple’s own iPhone 12 has gained an OLED screen, eliminating one of the key differentiators between the standard and Pro iPhones of previous years.
But, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best phone Apple has made, that doesn’t necessarily make it the phone you should buy.
Price
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is priced from £1099 ($1099, AU$1849). That gets you the standard 128GB model, with 256GB and 512GB versions available for £1199 ($1199, AU$2019) and £1399 ($1399, AU$2369) respectively.
The cheapest version of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is just £100 ($100, AU$250) more expensive than the smaller iPhone 12 Pro, but a whopping £300 ($300, AU$500) more than a standard iPhone 12, which now has an OLED screen of its own.
Features
Apple describes the straight-edged design of the iPhone 12 Pro Max as ‘all-new’, but it is reminiscent of older models such as the iPhone 4. Regardless, it is lovely to behold, with its stainless steel edges and textured matte back glass giving it a premium look and feel.
It feels weighty and solid, too, and it’s easier to grip, despite being marginally taller and wider (but also thinner) than the iPhone 11 Pro Max it replaces. Those straight edges make it slightly less comfortable to hold, but not to a great extent.
Despite the phone having grown just 2.8mm in height and 0.3mm in width, a thinning of the bezels has allowed for a screen that’s 0.2in bigger on the diagonal than that of its predecessor. This new screen uses what Apple calls a ‘Ceramic Shield’, which it claims is tougher than any other smartphone glass. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is IP68 rated, so is water-resistant at depths of up to 6m for up to 30 minutes.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max tech specs
Display 6.7in OLED
Resolution 2778 x 1284 (458ppi)
Front camera 12MP
Rear camera 12MP Ultra Wide, Wide, Telephoto
Operating system iOS 14
Storage 128GB, 256GB, 512GB
Arguably the biggest news is that new screen which, at 6.7in, is the largest to ever grace an iPhone. It’s also the brightest, with Apple claiming it reaches peaks of 1200 nits, with an average output of 800 nits.
This year, you don’t need to buy a Pro in order to get an OLED screen, as the standard iPhone 12 has one, too, but its typical brightness is rated at a lower 625 nits. The largest iPhone 12 has only a 6.1in display. Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG are now supported across the entire range, and there’s plenty available to watch in HDR, including on Netflix and the Apple TV app.
You can even now record your own video in Dolby Vision – the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are the first smartphone cameras with such a feature. Choose the Pro or Pro Max and recording can be done at 60fps rather than a maximum of 30fps.
The Pro models also boast an extra, telephoto lens that adds an optical zoom to the impressive suite of camera features. The Pro Max’s telephoto lens has a larger aperture than that of the non-Max Pro model, allowing it to capture more light. As well as the impressive camera hardware, the iPhone 12s also use features called ‘Deep Fusion’ and ‘Smart HDR 3’ to enhance detail and HDR highlights respectively.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max takes superb photos, but you’d have to be a camera enthusiast to get the most out of it, especially if you do a lot of night-time photography. The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max add a LiDAR scanner that improves low-light autofocus and allows bokeh portraits to be taken in Night Mode.
The new A14 Bionic chip, which also powers the standard iPhone 12 and 12 Pro models, is lightning fast, making the iPhone 12 Pro Max incredibly slick, snappy and frictionless in use. These new iPhones are the first to get 5G compatibility, making for faster data connections for those with an appropriate contract and coverage.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max also has a bigger battery than the iPhone 12 Pro or standard iPhone 12. Apple claims it lasts for up to 20 hours of video playback, compared with 17 hours for the other models. Indeed, during testing, we didn’t manage to fully empty the battery in a single day of use.
Much has been made of the fact that none of the new iPhones come bundled with a charger. If you don’t already have one, there are a number of options available, from the super-fast Apple 20W wired charger (£19, $19, AU$29), to various wireless charging options and even chargers that use the new MagSafe feature, which allows various accessories to be connected to the rear of the phone using magnets.
Screen
iPhones have long been consummate picture performers and, as we play It from the Apple TV app, it immediately becomes clear that the 12 Pro Max doesn’t buck the trend. This Dolby Vision film is streamed in strikingly cinematic fashion, with deep blacks, super-crisp edges and oodles of detail. But it’s not a night-and-day improvement on the iPhone 11 Pro Max it replaces. You appreciate the extra 0.2in more than you might expect, and there’s a slight increase in colour vibrancy, but this is a similar presentation overall.
However, the fact that the standard iPhone 12 is the first of its kind with an OLED screen presents something of an issue. Playing Lost In Space on Netflix, we can see that the gap between the standard and Pro models has never been narrower. The Pro Max has a larger screen, making for a much more cinematic experience, but the standard iPhone 12 delivers a more crisply defined image, due to its more compact dimensions. All things being equal, we’d choose the 12 Pro Max’s viewing experience, but the extra cost is hard to justify on picture performance alone.
It’s also interesting to compare the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the Award-winning Sony Xperia 1 II, which has a 21:9 display that makes for a bigger and more authentically cinematic presentation with the right material. Playing Dredd from Netflix (in Full HD and SDR), the Sony also proves to be the punchier, more vibrant and sharper performer, as well having a more neutral colour balance. If you’re open to the idea of switching to Android, the Xperia 1 II is worth trying out.
Sound
For listening out loud, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is simply the best phone there has ever been. What Apple has achieved in terms of loudness, spaciousness and punch is impressive. A good Bluetooth speaker at the affordable end of the market will still beat it, of course, but the openness of the soundfield is particularly impressive when watching a film, and effects extend surprisingly far to the left and right of the screen.
Playing through a pair of headphones (you’ll need a separate dongle) and the good news continues. The iPhone 12 is an exceptionally musical device in its own right, and the 12 Pro Max sounds slightly fuller and smoother at the expense of just a touch of crispness. We’re talking fine margins here, and both phones offer that balance, authenticity and sense of fun for which Apple products are renowned.
Plug those same headphones into the Sony Xperia 1 II (which still has a dedicated socket) and there’s an immediate increase in intensity. That can be seen as a positive – you can’t fail to be engaged – but the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s richer and more open approach is just as appealing, particularly over long listening sessions.
Verdict
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the best phone that Apple has ever made, with the biggest screen, the best speakers, the best camera and the biggest battery. But many of its upgrades over the iPhone 12 are minimal, and the fact that the standard iPhone now has an OLED display is another reason not to spend the extra.
In short, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is well worth stretching to if you’re a keen photographer or videographer, the standard iPhone 12 is without a doubt the performance-per-pound pick of the current range – and more than enough phone for all but the most demanding of users.
Apple is preparing a new edition of the MacBook Pro: In addition to a 16 “model, the manufacturer is planning Also reportedly the introduction of a new 14 “model. Both pro notebooks also use brighter, higher-contrast screens, as reported by the financial news agency Bloomberg with reference to an informed person. Mini-LED technology may be used for this, as has long been suspected.
More angular Design and Apple Silicon For the case of the MacBook Pro Bloomberg only expects “minor design changes”. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is usually well informed about Apple’s product plans, the new models rely on a more angular design on the edges – similar to the iPad Pro and iPhone 12.
The 2021 he MacBook Pro should be offered purely with Apple Silicon, Apple’s in-house ARM-based SoCs (System-on-Chip), probably in a more powerful version of the M1- Chips with more cores and improved graphics, according to Bloomberg . So far, Apple still has these model series with Intel processors, only the entry-level version of the 13 “MacBook Pro” is already available with an ARM processor – and shows a significant leap in performance. According to both reports, there will no longer be any parallel versions with Intel processors.
Return of MagSafe Apple is also bringing its popular MagSafe charging system back to MacBooks, the financial news agency said and the analyst also agreed. The new connection is similar to the MagSafe port previously installed on mobile Macs and relies on a magnetic connection. If the cable is pulled hard, it detaches from the notebook: This can prevent the MacBook Pro from stumbling, for example is torn from the table via the charging cable and damaged. MagSafe should also enable a faster charging process, it continues. On the iPhone 12 Apple has just introduced “MagSafe”, but as a new system for magnetic accessories and faster inductive charging.
Apple USB-C should remain true to the rest of the connections; charging should still be possible via this. According to the information from Kuo, Apple wants to integrate other types of connections in order to avoid having to carry adapters for many users. However, it remains unclear which ports it should be. In the last major redesign of the year 2016 Apple cut the HDMI port and an SD card slot.
Touch Bar before the end? According to Kuo, the new MacBook An end to the touch bar: the touch-sensitive OLED strip is giving way to the classic function keys, according to the analyst. The financial news agency only says that Apple is also testing models without a touch bar. Apple has the touch bar after its introduction in 2016 Hardly any further development, only functions were deleted – after numerous complaints, the company brought back the Escape key as a physical key. The new MacBook Pro models are expected in the first half of the year 2021, they could appear in May or June
Last month noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo gave out confirmation that Apple’s upcoming 2021 MacBook Air and 13” MacBook Pro will debut with mini LED displays and M1 chipsets. Today we get more details on the all-new 14” and 16” MacBook Pros which are said to bring major redesigns.
Kuo shares that the new top-end models will feature a squarer cut design on the top and bottom halves which is a natural evolution of the 2018 iPad Pro and iPhone 12 industrial design. In addition, both models are said to bring back Apple’s MagSafe charging connector which was last seen on Mac laptops back in 2017 with the last non-Retina MacBook Air.

The optional OLED Touch Bar will finally be removed altogether with all new models having physical function keys instead.
Port selection is said to be wider this time around as past MacBook users were not thrilled with having to carry around dongles. As expected, Apple-designed Arm processors will be the only option for the new MacBooks. Both new models will use a similar heat sink system as the current 16-inch model for optimal thermal management. There’s no mention if the new 14” and 16” MacBook Pros will come with mini LED displays.
Apple is planning a major MacBook Pro redesign for the third quarter of 2021, according to a research note written by TF International Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo and reported on by MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and Apple Insider. Kuo calls it the first major redesign of the MacBook Pro since the introduction of the current generation in 2016.
The new MacBook Pro is said to have squared-off sides like the iPad Pro and the iPhone 12; the current laptop already has sharp edges, but it sounds like the top and bottom panels are going to be flatter than before as well. The new model will reportedly come in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes both featuring Apple-designed Arm processors, with no Intel options. Kuo says the laptops will use a similar heat pipe system to the current 16-inch MacBook Pro, giving more thermal headroom and enabling higher performance.
Perhaps most notably, Kuo believes the new Pro laptops will backtrack on some of the controversial changes Apple made with the current generation. The OLED Touch Bar, for example, is said to have been replaced altogether by physical function keys. Kuo also says that there’ll be a wider range of ports reducing the need for dongles, though he doesn’t get specific. And a MagSafe magnetic charging connector is also set to return. (It’s not clear whether it’ll have anything in common with the new MagSafe accessory system for the iPhone 12.)
A new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s M1 processor was just released in November, but that model otherwise had near-identical hardware to the existing Intel version. If Kuo is to be believed — and his track record suggests that he is — the next models could be a huge improvement.
The LiDAR principle (English for “light detection and ranging”) is often used when robots or autonomous vehicles have to orientate themselves in the immediate vicinity. High-quality vacuum cleaner robots, for example, are a popular application – here, however, the environment is usually scanned with a rotating laser beam. Classic lidar scanners measure the time of flight of the laser light pulses emitted and reflected by the object.
The example program represents the Depth information of the Onion Tau as a false color image and as a point cloud.
In the meantime, however, there are sensors on the market that do without lasers and instead record the flight duration of the reflected light flash over a large area can – something like this is built into the luxury version of the iPhone 12. With the Onion Tau LiDAR camera there is now a reasonably inexpensive (179 US- $) possibility for makers to get depth images.
The Onion Tau provides a resolution of the distance map of 160 × 60 pixels and a frame rate of 30 fps; A grayscale image with the same resolution can be superimposed on the distance image for orientation. It detects objects in the range 10 cm up to 4.5 m away. The acquisition of the depth image is completely independent of the ambient light.
An extensive Python library is available for integration into your own projects; the developers emphasize that the camera can be addressed like a webcam and that the programming effort is therefore limited. The crowdfunding project has already achieved its funding goal; Delivery is to begin at the end of May 2021.
The dream of using your phone to unlock your car door (instead of carrying around a bulging key fob) may be one step closer today: Samsung has announced partnerships with Audi, BMW, Ford, and Genesis to do just that, saying the feature may be available as soon as August 2021. And excitingly, those digital car keys should work with Apple iPhones and across other Android brands, too.
That’s because Samsung is part of multiple standards bodies that are working on the tech, including the Car Connectivity Consortium and the FiRa Consortium, of which Apple is also a leading member. “You’ll even be able to share your digital key across smartphones, regardless of brand or platform,” Samsung’s Kevin Chung announced during the company’s Galaxy S21 event today.
Unfortunately, it’s not yet clear which automakers will support the coolest, securest version of this tech: UWB. It uses small, standardized beacon-like pulses of low-power energy, preferably from multiple parts of your car at once, to figure out exactly where you are in relation to your car’s handle from a sizable distance away.
Samsung says with the new digital keys, “you’ll be able to unlock your car door when you reach it, no sooner, no later,” but I’m pretty sure it’s only referring to UWB there. The fallback is NFC, where you’d likely need to pull your phone out and tap it to your car, like you do with tap-to-pay NFC transactions today.
Samsung also showed off how the tech can let you find your car in a crowded parking lot, with an augmented reality viewfinder it says it’s bringing to Samsung phones — but the fine print says it only works with UWB-equipped cars and UWB-enabled phones.
Every iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 comes with UWB now, but Samsung says only the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the new S21 Plus and S21 Ultra (so, not the S21?), and the “Galaxy Note 20+” (presumably referring to the Note 20 Ultra, which has UWB) will support the AR viewfinder.
Apple is also waiting for carmakers to adopt UWB and had to roll out its own version of digital car keys with NFC to start, and only on the 2021 BMW 5 Series. But BMW announced earlier today that it’ll support UWB, branded as “Digital Key Plus,” with the electric BMW iX.
Samsung’s also introducing a UWB-based tracking tag for finding your lost gadgets later this year, though — like the car keys — it’s starting off with a less impressive Bluetooth version instead that won’t let you locate them as precisely.
Prior to Samsung’s Unpacked event that will take place tomorrow, a thread on Twitter spills much about the Galaxy S21 series a day before its official unveiling. There are some hands-on images that confirm a few things that we’ve been suspecting in recent weeks, along with alleged suggested retail pricing for the US market.
#S21Ultra is THICKKKK😬 I haven’t held such a thick flagship in years. Makes the #Note20Ultra and #iphone12promax seem razr thin pic.twitter.com/IzRs5HwslB

The images in the first Tweet show all three devices side by side, which gives us an idea of the size difference between them. There’s also an impression that the largest variant, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, is “THICKKKK”. It’s noted as being thicker than both the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which are both 8.1 mm and 7.4 mm thin, respectively.
Carrier employees are being trained to not mention the plastic backs at all 😅 or lack of expandable storage or lack of power adapter in the box lol
— Mr.Techie – We The Techies (@We_The_Techies) January 13, 2021
It would appear that Mr.Techie may have obtained these images through a US retail carrier, as they mention that US carrier employees are being instructed to omit mentioning the fact that the entry-tier S21 has a plastic back, and that none of them come with a power adapter in the box. We assume that the employees would admit the lack of a microSD slot on the S21 Ultra if asked by a customer.
On the same note about carriers, the S21 Ultra is allegedly priced at $1,200 MSRP, but carriers will offer plenty of enticing promotions to push sales of the new Galaxy series. US carriers have been known to do this ever since the days of the Galaxy S7, offering BOGO and trade-in promotions.
$1200 msrp. But carriers will have very aggressive offers to attract buyers. Samsung is pouring tons of many into marketing and kick backs for the carriers to sell these phones

The Galaxy S21 has a plastic back, but it’s more reasonable now that the phone’s MSRP is allegedly $800. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21+ and the Galaxy S21 Ultra both have glass ones. However, the leaker claims they feel like plastic and wishes that Samsung tried to more closely emulated the matte finish of the iPhone 12 Pro lineup.
The #S21Ultra and plus have glass backs but FEEL like plastic due to the matte coating. #Samsung should have just copied how apple did matte coating

The battery sizes of the Galaxy S21+ and the Galaxy S21 Ultra are alleged to be 4800 mAh and 5000 mAh, respectively.

A short video posted confirms that the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s SIM tray does not have a slot for expandable storage.
I can confirm, there is NO expandable storage on the #S21Ultra pic.twitter.com/q19jW7B2G2

Finally, here’s an image that compares the three Galaxy S21 models with the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As of this writing, there are several ongoing leaks of the Galaxy S21. The three cats are officially (but also unofficially) out of the bag and all Samsung has to do now is livestream its presumably pre-recorded presentation.
In an interesting disassembly video posted to the company’s Weibo handle, Xiaomi shows the recently announced Mi 11 being disassembled and reassembled into a mechanical sculpture of a dragon. The Xiaomi MI 11 was announced in the final days of 2020 and it was the first device to arrive sporting the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset.
Two Mi 11 smartphones were disassembled, along with four Mi 11 vegetarian leather editions of the phone, which were used for their softer materials. Between all the devices used, it took an artist 30 days to assemble it into an impressive mechanical sculpture of a dragon. The pieces of leather were used for the horns and wings of the sculpture.
This is a special disassembly video. By disassembling two Mi 11 engineering machines, about 500 parts were reassembled, which took 30 days, and finally assembled into a mechanical dragon!
The Mi 11’s 108MP camera was featured as the dragon’s chest, so boast about the new phone’s camera capabilities. The assembled dragon was mounted atop specially decorated Qi wireless charger and the result looks incredible.
Xiaomi Mi 11
The Mi 11 arrived with the Snapdragon 888 paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s a large 6.81-inch AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This display features curved edges and hides an in-display optical fingerprint scanner from Goodix.
The camera setup consists of a 108MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide camera, and a basic 5MP macro shooter. Around front is a 20MP selfie camera placed behind the punch-hole cutout of the display. The Mi 11 starts at CNY3,999 ($610/€500) and its first flash sale began on January 1. Check the announcement post for all the details and color options for the Mi 11.
