top-10-trending-phones-of-week-47

Top 10 trending phones of week 47

For a second week in a row we have a surprising leader in our trending chart. Poco confirmed the M3 is on the way and it immediately got everyone talking.

That kept the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max in second, while another upcoming phone, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, starred in a few major leaks that got enough people excited for it to complete the podium.

In fourth we still have the Poco X3 NFC, while the almost one year-old Galaxy A51 picked up speed and took fifth.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro slipped to sixth, while the iPhone 12 rose a couple of spots to claim seventh.

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro lifted itself off the foot of the chart after two weeks in tenth position and is now eight, pushing the Galaxy M51 down to ninth.

The Galaxy A21s reenters the chart in the last position. That leaves the Realme 7 5G out along with the Nokia 8 V 5G UW and the Realme Note 9 Pro 5G.

samsung-galaxy-a02-–-a-small-and-cheap-smartphone-with-a-5000-mah-battery

Samsung Galaxy A02 – a small and cheap smartphone with a 5000 mAh battery

A small smartphone with a very long working time away from the charger is definitely a scarce commodity today. Although recently there have been many premieres of compact models, such as the iPhone 12 mini or Google Pixel 4a, however, we will not call any of them a long-distance runner. Fortunately, something may change in this matter in the near future. Samsung is working on a new budget model Galaxy A 02, which seems to meet the criteria just mentioned. We have just learned its initial specification, but not everyone will be delighted with it. As the naming itself indicates, it will be a device for the least demanding users.

Samsung Galaxy A 02 will stand out above all with a small screen and a very solid battery. However, as the naming itself indicates, it will still be a device for the least demanding users.

Samsung Galaxy M 12 them42 – smartphones with batteries 7000 and 6000 mAh

Samsung Galaxy A 02, also known as SM-A model 025 M / DS, it will offer a 5.7-inch HD + screen made in IPS technology. for today it is a really small diagonal, which should satisfy the supporters of handy devices. The whole thing will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 450, which although (like for this shelf) is characterized by good possibilities and good energy efficiency, but it is not the latest – its premiere took place in June … 2017 year. Chip b will work for a company with 3 GB of RAM.

Samsung Galaxy A 01 – a decent smartphone priced at 100 euro

On the back of the smartphone we have to find a dual camera consisting of lenses 13 Mpix + 2 Mpix, and in the front there is to be an “eye” of 8 Mpix. We should be calm about the working time of the new Galaxy – the 5000 mAh link in combination with an uncomplicated SoC and a small screen with HD + resolution should provide even several days of work away from the socket. We are curious about the next elements of the specification – if there was an NFC module, mini-jack or USB-C socket on board, we got a very tempting budgetary. However, the low price of the device is necessary.

motorola-moto-g10-play-–-we-know-almost-everything-about-a-smartphone

Motorola Moto G10 Play – we know almost everything about a smartphone

Motorola has a lot of cheap and good smartphones in its offer, so we can assume that the next series of budgeters will not disappoint fans of this brand . The well-known manufacturer is slowly getting ready to present devices from the Moto G family 10, which will include several models. The cheapest of them usually receives the entry Play and we suspect that it will be no different this time, especially since the smartphone with the working name of Motorola Moto G Play (2021) was just tested in Geekbench. It’s almost certainly a G 10 Play, and its specification is quite interesting. Add to this the previous, reliable renders and it turns out that we already know quite a lot about the new Motorola handset.

Motorola G 10 Play promises to be worse than the G9 Play model, which is now on sale, therefore we have every right to demand a correspondingly lower price. Let the producer not disappoint us with this.

The premiere of the smartphone Motorola Moto G9 Power – 60 h without charging

Motorola’s upcoming device will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processor 460 and will receive only 3 GB of RAM, which for more demanding users will certainly will be disqualifying. The phone received 253 points on the single-core test and 1233 points in the multi-core test These results are similar to those obtained by other devices powered by Snapdragon 460. The Geekbench screen also reveals that the phone will run on Android 10.

Motorola Razr 5G smartphone test – spectacular flap and flexible screen

In addition, the Motorola Moto G 10 Play will receive a 6.5-inch IPS display with a hole for webcam in the upper left corner. On the back we find a triple main camera. It is also worth noting that the fingerprint reader will land on the side frame this time. The strongest side of the smartphone will undoubtedly be the working time on a single charge, mainly due to the battery 4850 mAh. In addition, there is talk of the presence of a 3.5 mm mini-jack connector, however, unfortunately, nothing is known about the NFC module. What can I say – G 10 Play promises to be worse than the G9 Play (SD (SD 662, 4 GB RAM, 5000 mAh), therefore we have every right to demand a correspondingly lower price. Let the manufacturer not disappoint us with this.

Best wireless printer 2020: Wi-Fi network printing made easy

(Pocket-lint) – There’s nothing like being asked if you can print something for work at home to throw you for a loop – rooting around for the cables to connect your modern laptop with a printer your parents bought a decade ago, or like many of us simply accepting that you don’t own a printer at all.

  • On a budget? Here are the best cheap home printers: The best printers for documents and photos

If then, you’re looking to pick up a reliable, high-quality printer, one of your top priorities is going to be the ability to print wirelessly, without worrying about any cables at all. We’ve rounded up some of the very best wireless printers on the market, to help you choose your next machine. Both laser and inkjet models are covered.

Our pick of the best Wi-Fi printers to buy today

Canon

Canon Pixma TR8550

squirrel_widget_263902

Canon’s Pixma line of printers goes right from the most entry-level of pricing and features to much more expensive, fully-featured models. The TR8550 is a nice blend of both of those, keeping the cost down nicely while still offering great connectivity and ease of use.

Brother

Brother MFC-J1300DW

squirrel_widget_263903

Amping up the budget a bit, Brother’s MFC-J1300DW (printer names don’t tend to roll off the tongue) might not look like a hugely svelte modern machine, but its performance is exemplary. It has Wi-Fi and NFC to let you print from multiple devices easily, and is an inkjet model, so can print nice and quickly.

With scanning, copying and even fax capabilities also on board, it’s pretty fleshed-out and is impressive for how simple it is to use once you’ve set it up. It’s not the cheapest, but as you’ll see it’s also far from at the top end of the budget scale.

Epson

Epson Expression Premium XP-6105

squirrel_widget_263904

Epson’s printer is a great way of coming back down the pricing ladder a bit – you won’t find much better performance than this for a double-figure price, as far as we’re concerned. Its wireless printing comes via Wi-Fi connectivity, and Epson’s app for mobile printing is easy to use, too.

HP

HP LaserJet Pro M227fdw

  • View offer on HP Store (sponsored link)

The machine is compact and attractive and folds up into an even smaller and less obtrusive shape when not in use. Copying and scanning round out a great feature set.

Oki

Oki C844dnw

squirrel_widget_263948

Our final printer takes us into the pricing stratosphere – we recognise that for most people it’ll be way outside their budget, but if you’re looking for A3 printing in the smallest body anywhere on the market, Oki’s got the model for you.

With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, the C844dnw looks more like an A4 printer, given how compact it is, but is fully capable of making high-quality A3 prints, making it great for designers or artists who want to work on a slightly bigger scale. It’s super fast and reliable, and might cost a bomb but will deliver undeniably superb prints.

Best smartwatch 2020: Top smartwatches available to buy today

(Pocket-lint) – Smartwatches are here to stay. These wrist-worn phone companions can receive calls, texts, emails, and social media notifications. Many attempts have been made, some more successful than others, some much better looking than others and some smarter than others.

If you’re looking to take the smartwatch plunge, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve rounded up the best out there that we have had the pleasure of reviewing in full.

This feature covers smartwatches on various platforms, from Google’s Wear OS to Apple’s watchOS. If you are only interested in Wear OS smartwatches or Apple Watch options, we have separate features you can read to find the perfect smartwatch for you.

Apple Watch SE

squirrel_widget_2670420

The Apple Watch SE misses off a couple of the more accomplished Series 6’s features, including the always-on display, blood oxygen sensor and ECG sensor, but it has the same design, runs the same software and it’s cheaper.

By pulling together some of the best parts of the discontinued Series 4 and Series 5, the Watch SE is an affordable entry point to the Apple Watch, offering a great middle ground between the sensor-rich Series 6 and the older Series 3.

Garmin Fenix 6 Pro

squirrel_widget_167642

We won’t pretend that the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro is priced at a point that many people would stomach, but the reality is that it offers one of the most complete and impressive feature-sets on any smartwatch. Whether you’re taking huge hikes in the wilderness or using it as an everyday smartwatch, it’ll steer you right and work smoothly.

Garmin’s reputation for fitness tracking is richly deserved, and the Fenix 6 Pro will be overkill for many people, but it’s still a massively comprehensive watch that’s top of its class in most regards, price notwithstanding.

Pocket-lint

Apple Watch Series 6

squirrel_widget_2670421

The Apple Watch Series 6 improves on its predecessor with battery and display refinements, along with a couple of extra sensors, including a blood oxygen sensor and an always on altimeter.

For some, it will be sensor overload and the Watch SE will more than suffice. For others, despite the new sensors feeling like a bit of a tick-box exercise, there’s still no better smartwatch on the market for iPhone users.

Tag Heuer Connected 2020

squirrel_widget_231495

The Tag Heuer Connected 2020 fully delivers in  offering a smartwatch that looks like a traditional Tag.

It doesn’t quite rival the sports tracking skills of a Garmin or Polar but Tag Heuer remains ahead of the pack as far as building a truly desirable smartwatch that feels worthy of that steep price tag. It is a beauty of a smartwatch.

Michael Kors Access Runway

squirrel_widget_145596

The Michael Kors Access Runway is the perfect smartwatch for those after stylish wrist-wear with solid performance and plenty of features. It has built-in GPS and heart rate monitoring, as well as plenty of apps thanks to Google’s Wear OS platform.

Its battery life isn’t the best out there and despite a range of fitness features, it’s definitely a more fashion-focused device but for the Michael Kors fan, the Access Runway is a fabulous smartwatch and everything you could want.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

squirrel_widget_166890

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 features a light, sporty design with case options of 40mm and 44mm. There is waterproofing up to 50-metres, great sports tracking features and great performance, with specific options for loads of different sports.

As it runs on Tizen rather than Wear OS, there is a slight lack of third party apps, and this isn’t an amazing choice for iPhone users, either. If you’re looking for a smartwatch to go with your Android device that also happens to be a great fitness and activity tracker though, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is a very compelling device to consider.

Skagen Falster 3

squirrel_widget_192160

The Skagen Falster 3 has a fabulous Scandinavian design, offering a simple and minimalist look that’s perfect for those after a subtle smartwatch.

It doesn’t have the best battery life of those on this list, but with NFC and GPS on board it’s a really great option if you like its design. Plus, with good storage for offline music playback and good solid performance, it’s still useful if you leave your phone behind.

Fossil Gen 5 Garrett HR

squirrel_widget_307331

The Fossil Gen 5 Garrett smartwatch is a great looking smartwatch and one of many offered under the company’s umbrella – most of which offer the same features.

It and the Gen 5 offer a good performance, interchangeable straps, a solid build quality and come with a heart rate sensor and built-in GPS. If you’re on Android, the Wear OS software will work as well as it can with your device too.

Huawei Watch GT 2e

squirrel_widget_234512

The Huawei Watch GT 2e offers a fantastic battery life, good fitness options, a wealth of data in the accompanying health app and a vibrant and bright screen.

It might not be perfect but if you haven’t got the budget to spend on a smartwatch from Apple, or a high-end fitness watch from Garmin, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is a great middle ground.

Michael Kors Access MKGO

squirrel_widget_168154

The Michael Kors Access MKGO is an excellent smartwatch for the active Michael Kors fan. It offers a lightweight and sporty design, a lovely display and a great feature set, including waterproofing, built-in GPS and NFC for Google Pay payments from your wrist.

It’s not as premium as the Michael Kors Access Runway (above), it doesn’t have the best battery on this list and there are a couple of performance issues here and there, but overall, the MKGO and its customisable Michael Kors faces and heavy MK branding will be perfect for some Kors fans.

Casio WSD-F21HR

squirrel_widget_193391

The Casio WSD-F21HR has successfully built another great outdoor watch with a long battery life, a durable design and a secondary mono display that is great for timekeeping.

There’s a heart rate sensor on board, making it much more useful than it’s predecessors and the Moment Setter watch app is really great too. If you want a solid, durable outdoor smartwatch, the F21HR is definitely Casio’s best effort yet.

the-nfl-pro-bowl-will-be-hosted-in-madden-this-season

The NFL Pro Bowl will be hosted in Madden this season

Last month, the National Football League announced it would cancel the 2021 Pro Bowl game — news that went largely unnoticed, since very few football fans care about it. But today, first reported by CNBC, the NFL announced it will resurrect the Pro Bowl as a weeklong digital event with players competing in EA’s Madden NFL 21 instead.

Details are scant, outside of the promise of “celebrities, NFL Legends, current players, and streamers,” according to an EA press release. Even the exact date is still to come. (Pinning one down will depend on if the NFL season is extended into an 18th week, the rumored solution if COVID cases mess with the schedule further.)

Still, it’s a fun, inevitable solution to what has often been the NFL’s least necessary tradition. The Pro Bowl fills the gap week between the playoffs and the Super Bowl, when the two competing teams rest. Naturally, the NFL fills that empty space with their equivalent of an all-star game, though football being a sport with high injury rates, players tend to compete in the Pro Bowl at half speed and soft contact out of respect to each other. (After all, the results of the game are essentially meaningless, unless you believe that an AFC / NFC rivalry is real.) The result is often a kind of odd, low-stakes celebration that draws an audience smaller than your average Thursday night game — though hearing Ryan Tannehill fanboy out to fellow QB Deshaun Watson might make the whole thing worth it.

That said, the NFL often uses the Pro Bowl as a way to test things. Last year, the event introduced a rule that teased getting rid of kickoffs entirely, one of the most dangerous plays in the sport. In 2021, the NFL will see what it’s like taking football completely off the field.

samsung’s-new-smart-monitor-is-like-a-tv-for-your-pc

Samsung’s new Smart Monitor is like a TV for your PC

Samsung is no stranger to releasing quirky computer monitors, such as last year’s Space Monitor that articulates like the Microsoft Surface Studio desktop. For late 2020, the company is releasing the Smart Monitor, which it claims is the first monitor to combine over-the-top media services, mobile connectivity, and remote PC capabilities. Samsung is releasing the M5 lineup, consisting of a 27-inch size for $230 and a 32-inch size for $280. A 32-inch 4K monitor called the M7 is also coming that costs $400.

It’s not as immediately eye-catching as the aforementioned Space Monitor, but it makes up for it with having more features. Like Samsung’s line of TVs, the Smart Monitor runs Samsung’s Tizen OS software and can connect to your Wi-Fi network to stream HDR10 content from apps like Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV, YouTube, and more without the need for any extra hardware connected. You can install other apps from the embedded app store, like Samsung’s Health app.

All variants of the monitor can be mounted to your wall or to a monitor arm via 100 x 100 Vesa mounts. Each has two 5W speakers built in and includes a remote control with voice assistant support for Bixby 2.0, Alexa, and Google Assistant. They’re even AirPlay 2-compatible, making it easy to cast from Apple devices. It’s sounding a lot like a TV, yeah?

Image: Samsung

If you want to use it like a monitor for getting things done, it has a few more tricks up its sleeve. For instance, you can connect a mouse and keyboard via Bluetooth 4.2 and connect to Office 365 through a virtual machine without the need for any additional computing hardware. You can also connect wirelessly via DeX, Samsung’s utility that lets your Galaxy S8 or newer phone power a desktop-like PC experience on the monitor. You can also quickly mirror your Samsung phone’s (running Android Oreo 8.1 or higher) display by tapping it to the top-right edge of the monitor, where its NFC tag is located.

The M7 Smart Monitor has the richest selection of connectivity options for gadgets. You can connect a laptop via USB-C (capable of DisplayPort video, data transfer, and power up to 65W), and you’ll have two HDMI 2.0 ports to spare (the M5 features two HDMI 2.0 ports sans USB-C). You’ll also find three USB-A 2.0 ports for data on the M7. Each of the M5 monitors has two.

Only the M7 variant of the Smart Monitor supports USB-C video, with up to 65W passthrough power to keep your laptop charged up.
Image: Samsung

The M5 Smart Monitor models will be releasing in a few weeks, and the M7 is currently set to release in early December. You’ll be able to buy them through Samsung.com or from other retailers around the country.

Will there be small smartphones again?

How many people really want a small smartphone? If you sort small phones in the Pricewatch from 2020 – maximum 15 x6,6cm for example – then you will only find two models: the iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 12 mini, not coincidentally from the same manufacturer: Apple.

In the category of slightly larger phones, there is plenty of choice with, for example, the Google Pixel 4a and Samsung Galaxy S 20, but those phones are a lot bigger. A new phenomenon is not: phones have been getting bigger for years and Sony’s Compact series of small smartphones started way back in 2013.

With the arrival of the iPhone 12 mini, the question arises whether this step by Apple will find. In short: will we now see more smartphones with a really small housing?

Figures An average phone has become increasingly larger in recent years. This is evident from figures in our Pricewatch. If we look at the size of the average telephone, then every year a little bit is added, especially in length.

In figures you can also see this: the average goes from 14, 5x7cm in 2014 to 16 x7.5cm now. But what is striking: phones in 2014 weren’t really small either. For example, the iPhone 12 mini is 13, 1×6.4cm, a lot smaller than the 14, 5x7cm of the Moto G 2nd Gen which was average in 2014.

This shows a clear trend: phones are getting a lot longer and a little bit wider. That corresponds to screen proportions: where phones in 2014 to 2016 almost all have a 16: 9 screen, it now fluctuates between 19: 9 and 21: 9. This has resulted in screens appearing much larger – diagonals of 6.5 “are now quite normal – while screens are mainly longer.

The width has increased a bit, but even wider phones hold less hold tight and don’t fit so well in trouser pockets, which are some of the reasons why phones have gotten longer.

An iPhone 12 mini can be called small with 13, 1×6, 4cm The same goes for Sony’s Compact phones from a few years ago, the latest of which is the XZ2 Compact from 13, 5×6.5cm. As telephones are now longer, we have taken 14 x6,6cm as the limit for a small phone.

If you fill in that and look at how many phone models comply with it, then that will indeed become less and less. In 2014 these were 30 percent of all models, now less than 1 percent. Except d e iPhone 12 mini only satisfies the iPhone SE 2020 to that format

But maybe that is unfair and so we have used another calculation method. How many phones have appeared with no more than three-quarters of the surface – length times width – of an average phone of that year?

The percentages are lower, but the picture is the same: many phones have around the same area. Obviously, there is arguing about where you should set the boundary of ‘small’, but the picture is that the number of small telephones in absolute and relative terms has fallen to almost zero in recent years.

The why Would you buy a phone with a single camera, without 5G and with a battery life of half a day? If you think this does not sound like an attractive offer, you will immediately see why hardly anyone has a small phone in their range anymore.

Because the number of components that manufacturers want to put into phones is serious grown. Multiple cameras, some with large sensors, a high capacity battery and the antennas to receive 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, wifi, bluetooth, NFC and GPS all take up space.

Sony – the great example in the Android field that compact phones are possible – looked for the thickness with its Compact series. The XZ2 Compact from 2018 is therefore relatively small, but with 12, 1mm very thick; the average at the time was around 8.5mm. This allowed a 2870 mAh battery in it.

The battery capacity is also where iPhones sacrifice. The iPhone SE 2020 has a 1821 mAh battery, the iPhone 12 mini does it with a 2227 mAh battery and that’s about half the that of an average smartphone today. The housing thereof is 7.4 mm or thin again.

The fact that Apple can get away with that is partly due to the economy of iOS: Apple’s phones squeeze a relatively long battery life from their small batteries. . The iPhone SE scores about average on our battery tests, maybe slightly below.

That is also what top people of Xiaomi subsidiary brand Redmi have said. Smaller phones are possible, but then you lose battery life, Wang Cheng Tomas said on Weibo this summer. Other manufacturers don’t let on the record know anything, but the portfolio speaks volumes: Samsung has stopped smaller models such as the A3 phones and the S 10 e did not get a successor either. Xiaomi also did not give smaller models a successor and Sony stopped its Compact phones. Google is the only one to make the opposite step this year: the Pixel 4 XL didn’t get a successor, and the Pixel 4a and 5 are among the smallest phones released this year.

These are all technical reasons , but there are other considerations as well. The use of telephones is increasingly about video on, for example, TikTok, YouTube or Netflix. So many people want a bigger screen for that reason. A smaller screen is more suitable for users who mainly use phones as a means of communication, for example WhatsApp and e-mail.

Figures on this are difficult to find, but when it comes to smartphones with small screens you can do conclude the following: if they had been a big and resounding success, we would have seen more small telephones by now. Manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony would never stop with small phones if there was sufficient demand.

Outside the mainstream, some niche phones with a small housing have appeared. Among these are, for example, last year’s Palm Phone, although it only worked as a secondary telephone with the American provider Verizon Wireless. Another initiative is the Unihertz Jelly 2 from earlier this year, a 3 “screen phone that was available to order through Kickstarter. The campaign has been successful, so he’s coming to backers next month There are 5323, which sounds like a lot until you consider that more than a billion smartphones are sold annually.

Finally The release of the iPhone 12 mini will be followed with great interest in all boardrooms of smartphone makers. How do users respond? What is the battery life? Do people think this size is fine or is it too small? It is like a large-scale user test for the smartphone market.

If the iPhone 12 mini flies out of the stores and produces satisfied users, then it is obvious that there will also be Android models with smaller cases – if only to try and get a piece of the pie Each phone is a compromise but which compromises are the most acceptable? Could the battery be smaller? Can a camera be removed? Can there be a function? How fat can we make him?

Those are all questions that could arise. But with the disappearance of the XL versions of the Google Pixel phones and the appearance of the iPhone 12 mini in any case it is clear that the compact phone is not completely gone yet. The market segment still exists, but the question is whether it will grow in the coming period or whether it will remain small.

eid:-verimi-saves-personal-information-on-the-iphone

eID: Verimi saves personal information on the iPhone

Verimi wants to simplify online use of ID cards: ID card data can now be saved in the iOS app, as the identity platform has now announced. They are read in via the NFC interface of the iPhone, for which an identity card with online function (“eID”) and the PIN are required. The data should be stored “securely encrypted” locally on the device. For users of older iPhones, it is offered to store the personal data in a video legitimation.

Banks, insurance companies, online Administration As a result, the majority of smartphone users in Germany should now be technically able to use their ID cards online. The Verimi app can then be used to carry out online administrative processes as well as to use offers from the private sector, for example to open a bank account, as the provider explains.

The Verimi shareholders include the Allianz Insurance Group, Axel Springer Verlag, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Telekom, Bundesdruckerei and Lufthansa. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC), a “Germany ID” is currently being developed which is to be used as an overarching standard for secure digital identities.

Easier to use By storing the ID card on the iPhone, it is no longer necessary to hold the document near the device for each process and to enter your PIN every time, explains the spokesman for the management. The stored data could be released via fingerprint (Touch ID) or face recognition (Face ID).

The Federal Government’s AusweisApp2 has only been available for iOS devices for over a year. The reason for the waiting time was Apple’s limitation of the NFC interface in iPhones, which was originally only used for the Apple Pay payment service. Only from iOS 13 did the iPhone group open the radio interface further. The eID function of the identity card in credit card format has been generally activated since spring 2017. The user usually receives the required PIN from the identity card authority.

In the meantime almost everyone has the ID card with a chip in their wallet, but in the current “E-Government Monitor” of the business-oriented digitization initiative D 20 only six percent of the respondents said that they had ever used the online identification function had – just as few as 2019. The E-Perso just doesn’t move.

And that, although a handicap of the first few years has been eliminated: you no longer need a special reader to read the radio chip. Since 128 Android smartphones with NFC can serve as readers, since autumn 2019 also iPhones. Nevertheless 2020 no more people use the ID than before.

Contactless payment: ECJ empowers consumers when they lose their bank cards

If a bank card with contactless payment function is lost, the European Court of Justice has strengthened consumers in the EU. According to a ruling on Wednesday, the customer does not bear the risk for payments made after reporting the loss of a card to the bank. This could not simply claim that it was technically impossible to block the so-called near field communication function (NFC) for contactless payment, ruled the Luxembourg judges (case C 287 / 19). Banks generally do not require you to enter a PIN code for contactless payments with NFC cards or a smartphone for amounts up to 25 euros.

Blocking not technically impossible The background is a lawsuit by the Austrian Association for Consumer Information (VKI) against the General terms and conditions for NFC cards from DenizBank. In this, the bank excludes its liability for unauthorized payments. It also points out that if the card is lost, the account holder bears the risk of NFC misuse and that this function cannot be blocked if the card is lost. In the process before the Austrian Supreme Court, DenizBank denied “the VKI’s argument that such a blocking was technically possible”, but according to the ECJ not.

The Luxembourg judges have now made it clear that contactless payment is an anonymous payment instrument within the meaning of the relevant EU directive and that this enables the bank to ease liability. But the bank could not simply claim that blocking the card was technically impossible, even though it was proven to be wrong. The customer must be able to report the loss or misuse of the card immediately and free of charge. After this report, there should be no financial consequences for the customer – unless he acted with fraudulent intent.

The transmission of payment data via Near Field Communication (NFC) is largely secure and mature. Since the distance between the bank card or a smartphone and the payment terminal may only be a few centimeters, the transferred data record (“token”) cannot be intercepted remotely. This is what distinguishes NFC from Bluetooth wireless technology. In addition, the encrypted transmitted token is only valid for this one payment process and cannot be used multiple times.

Secret debits unlikely Since the banks do not require a PIN to be entered at the POS terminal for smaller sums up to 25, it is at least theoretically possible that attackers can trigger an unauthorized payment themselves. To do this, they would have to approach the victim’s NFC card with a small mobile terminal unnoticed within a few centimeters, for example in the crowd of a subway. However, this attack method can be effectively circumvented by keeping an NFC-enabled credit or giro card together with others in the wallet, as several NFC-enabled cards block each other. This also works with the new ID card with NFC function.

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) therefore considers it “unlikely” that cards will be tapped “in passing”. Anyone who fears an unauthorized payment process through NFC can also put their credit or giro card in a shielding cover that prevents communication through NFC. To pay via NFC, the card would always have to be removed from the case.
