The presentation day of the new AMD Ryzen processors has arrived 5000 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards 3000 for laptops – we had to wait two years for the new generation and we hope that this year’s laptops will be much better in many respects than previous gaming models. The first major manufacturer to present the new line-up for this year is the Taiwanese company ASUS. The manufacturer has prepared a number of both new and improved laptop models. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the fact that all this year’s Republic of Gamers notebooks were prepared in cooperation with AMD. Thus, all models described today are powered by AMD Ryzen processors 5000 from the family of APU Cezanne-H. The second surprise is the ROG Flow X laptop 12, which although not based on Intel chips, presents the most ambitious idea for an eGPU station combined with a docking station.
ASUS at CES 2021 presented a rich line-up of gaming laptops from the ROG Strix and ROG Zephyrus lines. The most interesting novelty seems to be the ROG Flow X 13 with an innovative approach to the eGPU theme. All laptops will be powered by AMD Cezanne-H processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards 3000.
The following models of gaming laptops will be available this year: ASUS ROG Flow X 13, ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE, ROG Zephyus G 15 (2021), ROG Zephyrus G 14 (2021), ROG Strix G (2021), ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2021) and ROG Strix SCAR 17 (2021). All models will be equipped with AMD Cezanne-H processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards 3000. Interestingly, this time Ryzen systems 5000 – H will be “anointed” with liquid metal – Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut was applied not only to the APU itself, but also to the capacitors. Something every year ago was impossible for the manufacturer, this year it became possible. We will see how the liquid metal will affect the Cezanne APU temperatures, because last year’s Renoir was definitely not the coolest.
At the beginning we will discuss the most interesting novelty, i.e. ASUS ROG Flow X 13. The sales set will include a laptop, power supply and a special eGPU ROG XG Mobile GPU station. However, it is not based on the Thunderbolt 3/4 interface, but on a specially designed PCI Express 3.0 x8 connector. What is the bandwidth of such a solution? ASUS declares the level 63 Gb / s using PCI Express 3.0 x8 connector. For comparison, on the Thunderbolt 4 interface, the bandwidth does not exceed 32 Gb / s. So I’m talking about over 50% more bandwidth than new graphics cards Ampere from NVIDIA will definitely use it. It is also the first of its kind to bypass Intel processors, instead focusing on the more energy-efficient AMD Cezanne-H units. The set includes processors such as AMD Ryzen 7 5800 HS, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 HS or a special version of AMD Ryzen 9 5980 HS, prepared exclusively for the ASUS ROG Flow X laptop 13. The laptop itself is in fact a convertible device, in which we can rotate the screen by a close angle 360 degrees.

The notebook itself looks more like an ultrabook. This is an even slimmer version of last year’s ROG Zephyrus G 13. The maximum device thickness is 15 , 8 mm, and the weight of the laptop is only 1.3 kg. Despite this, inside there are not only 8-core and 16 – AMD Ryzen threaded processors 5000, but also a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX card 1650. The custom PCI Express 3.0 x8 connector is located on the left side of the device. Fortunately, it does not take up too much space, and in addition, the eGPU ROG XG Mobile GPU station itself is also extremely slim. It weighs a kilogram and thanks to the built-in stand, it can also be placed vertically. The station inside has a built-in NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card 3080 (There were also mentions of RTX at the ASUS presentation 3090, but I still have to confirm this information directly with the manufacturer), the cooling system based on the steam chamber and the power supply 280 W. As with typical laptops, the eGPU station will include the GeForce RTX 3080 Based on Ampere GA Core 104 with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM.
Station The eGPU ROG XG Mobile GPU is not only a base for a graphics card, but also a docking station that offers additional ports. The ROG Flow X laptop alone 13 has quite a lot of them, but with an additional station at our disposal we get even more connectors: 1x DisplayPort 1.4, 1x HDMI (we are not sure if we are talking about HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1), network Ethernet RJ – 45 and four full USB 3.2 Type A Gen.2 connectors. The sale will include both full sets, including a laptop and ROG XG Mobile GPU station in the package, as well as sets with the notebook itself. Prices are not known yet, but sales will start in the first quarter.
The refreshed ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo notebook will also be available 15 SE. Structurally, it will be the same equipment as the models from last year. There will be some changes, however. First of all, instead of Intel processors, we get AMD Ryzen chips 5000 – H. In the case of a graphics card, we can count on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX chip 3080 with TDP In the default version. Therefore, it will not be an energy-saving version of Max-Q, but it will also lack the top TDP variants 150 W. Notebook will offer one NVIDIA functionality called Dynamic Boost 2.0, which will increase the TDP to the level 130 W. Another change will be the possibility to choose a 4K matrix with refreshing 120 Hz – this is a big step forward compared to the base 4K screens, which previously offered refreshing in laptops 60 Hz. The second variant of the laptop will offer a Full HD screen with refresh 300 Hz. 4K Screen 120 Hz will offer 100% Adobe RGB space coverage while Full HD 300 Hz supports 100% sRGB.

Notebooks will also be refreshed ASUS ROG Zephyrus G 13 and ROG Zephyrus G 14. However, the larger changes concern the latter model, which in this year’s version offers a design identical to the smaller ROG Zephyrus G 14. The outer cover looks interesting. For Zephyrus G 13, white LEDs are placed there as standard, which can be personalized into various pictures or inscriptions using a dedicated application. ON ASUS ROG Zephyrus G 14 (ROG Zephyrus G 14 will also receive such variants) in the same place will be placed colorful LEDs, which will combine to form characteristic, illuminated stripes, smoothly mixing different colors. The effect is not too intrusive, but interesting enough to attract attention. In the case of components, ASUS was not too keen on giving details. We know that both laptops will offer AMD Ryzen processors 5000 – H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards 3000 in Max-Q Design editions. New to the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G 15 (2021) will use a matrix with a resolution 2560 x 1440 pixels, 165 Hz refresh rate (with Adaptive-Sync support) and 100% coverage of DCI-P3 color space. Both ASUS ROG Zephyrus G 14 (2021) how i ASUS ROG Zephyrus G 14 (2021) will be offered in black and white.

There will also be four ASUS ROG Strix laptops, respectively: ROG Strix G 15, ROG Strix G 17, ROG Strix SCAR 15 and ROG Strix SCAR 17. They offer a slightly refreshed design, incl. replaceable housing elements right next to the hinge or slimmer frames, at the same time increasing the body to screen ratio from 81 to 85%. For ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 14 and ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 one of the most noticeable novelties will be the implementation of a mechanical keyboard with low-profile optical switches. All laptops are based on AMD Ryzen processors 5000 – H (in the case of ROG Strix SCAR you will also be able to choose models from AMD Ryzen 9 5900 HX, factory overclocked) and NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards 3000. The matrices will include Full HD IPS panels 300 / 360 Hz as well as Quad HD refresh 165 Hz and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. All of these ROG Strix and ROG Zephyrus laptops will have Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut liquid metal applied to AMD Cezanne-H APUs.
