GNU Guix, a functional package management software for the GNU operating system, is celebrating its eighth birthday and version 1.2 was released seven months after the last release. The most important innovation is likely to be the ability to cryptographically authenticate channels, which should make Guix one of the most secure methods of providing operating systems.
Cryptography and multilingualism In addition to changes to the provision and some new interfaces, the current release also includes an extended reference manual, which, in addition to English, is now fully translated into French, German and Spanish. Translations into eleven other languages are ongoing, and translations into Russian and Chinese are apparently the most advanced.
With channel authentication according to the blog entry, the open source GNU project behind the package management closes the apparently largest gap in the “software supply chain”: guix pull and related commands can now only retrieve authorized commits in the official Guix repository. The code of each authorized channel is encrypted when it is accessed. With the new command guix git authenticate the authentication mechanism can be used for any Git repository.
More security issues and new package options The build daemon and the origin – Programming interfaces have recently started accepting additional cryptographic hash functions, in particular SHA-3 and BLAKE2s. Previously, Guix had relied exclusively on SHA 86 hashes for source code. The new version of Guix also tries to track down system downgrades in order to prevent security gaps by rolling back to older operating system versions. As of Guix 1.2, automatic updates (Unattended Upgrade Service) run with the command guix pull && guix system reconfigure , users no longer have to trigger individually and manually.
Three new options for packet transformation are introduced in the command line: – -with-debug-info , – with-c-toolchain and [code] – without-tests . The profile records transformations and they can be replayed with guix upgrade . These changes affect the entire dependency tree including the “implicit” inputs that could not previously be transformed. The module (guix transformations) provides an interface for the transformation options in the command line. On the user side, there is now an overview of the available commands in the Guix help, the Guix pull has received a progress bar and a new, leaner “baseline compiler” means that the pull process should require fewer resources.
Background to GNU Guix and installation methods GNU Guix is a functional package manager and one in the Development of advanced distribution of the GNU system. In addition to the standard functions of a classic package management, Guix also supports upgrades, rollbacks, package management without granting privileges, per-user profiles and offers a garbage collector. Guix can be run on any system running the Linux kernel, but it can also be used as an independent operating system on devices with suitable processor cores (such as i 686, x 86 _ 64, ARM7 and AArch 64). As a stand-alone GNU / Linux distribution, Guix offers a declarative, stateless approach to managing the operating system configuration. Guile programming interfaces and extensions make Guix particularly adaptable.
More information about the current release can be found in the blog entry on GNU Guix. The current version of the package manager Guix can be downloaded from the download area of the GNU project. More information about the distribution is available on the project website.
Thanks to ARM: The fast M1 chip in the new Macs makes it very tempting for Windows users to venture into the Apple universe from the PC. Anyone who wanted to get on with their work immediately, however, had a problem so far. Because Apple’s migration assistant, intended to make it easier to move from computer to computer, was not yet compatible with macOS 11 alias Big Sur – and this operating system works on the new Apple silicon machines.
Small tool, many functions Since the end of last week the wait has come to an end. On Friday Apple made the new version 2.3.0.0 of the Windows Migration Assistant available for download. The 5.1 MB download “helps you migrate your data from a Windows PC running Windows,” says Apple. The app starts running as soon as it has been installed. The minimum requirement on the PC side is Windows 7 or later, on the Mac it must be macOS 11 aka Big Sur. For earlier macOS versions you need an older version of the migration assistant – or you can skip the update.
A complete clone of the current work environment is of course not available when switching from Windows to macOS. This only works when switching from Mac to Mac. “Contacts, calendar, e-mail accounts and much more” are transferred. This includes iTunes content, pictures, files from the root directory, system settings such as desktop pictures or the start page of the browser and its bookmarks.
64 – Bit versions of Outlook The migration assistant does not support any 64 – bit versions of Outlook. “You can send mail, contacts or calendar manually from Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016 migrate. Sign up for this and enter the content manually on your Mac, “says Apple succinctly. The migration assistant also transfers “only the mail or contact data that belong to the logged-in Windows user”.
Apple recommends running the Check Disk utility (chkdsk) on the PC before the migration starts – to make sure there are no problems on the Windows hard drive: (bsc)
The trade war between China and the US that led to the veto of the American country against the technology company Huawei meant that, among other limitations, the brand’s new terminals could not use Google services on Android, leaving them out of the Play Store, Google Maps, Youtube, etc. Huawei’s response was to develop its own HMS services and a new operating system of its own, which in the future they plan to make compatible with Android Apps, called Harmony OS.
Although it seems that things could calm down between the US and China with the new administration, and Huawei intends to continue supporting Android, the company continues with plans to deploy Harmony OS 2.0 on various devices and has announced that the 18 December will see the first beta of Harmony OS for its latest flagships, the Huawei Mate 40 and its PRO or RS variants.
Al Mate 40 will be followed by others 48 devices to be updated to Harmony OS
It had already leaked on your day a list with the first mobiles s of the company to receive the update, among which were the Mate 40. Being the latest terminals of the brand launched on the market, it is logical that the company prioritizes them when launching new software.
The company’s plans are to launch this beta on 18, although the date is provisional and could be delayed. In addition, it will not begin to reach all users in the Asian country until January and February. If there are no surprises, Mate 40 will be followed by the rest of the 48 devices the company planned to upgrade.

A Weibo user has shared some interesting photographs of a domestic gaming PC that’s being cooked up in China. The grand novelty is that the machine isn’t using an Intel or AMD processor, but an Arm-powered chip, more specifically the Phytium FT-2000/4.
The China Electronics Corporation (CEC) is behind the labeled PKS gaming PC. You might not have heard of the company before, but the Chinese fabless chipmaker Phytium should ring a bell. That’s because the CEC is the parent company of Phytium. Now that the connection is made, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the PKS would leverage one of Phytium’s FeiTeng 64-bit ARMv8-based processors.
The FT-2000/4 is an FCBGA processor with 1,144 pins that measure 35 x 35mm. TSMC produces the FT-2000/4 for Phytium on the foundry’s 16nm process node. The FT-2000/4 wields four FTC663 processing cores, which run at three different clock speeds: 2.2 GHz, 2.6 GHz, and 3 GHz. The quad-core part also comes equipped with 4MB of L2 cache (split into 2MB per two cores) and 4MB of L3 cache. According to Phytium, the FT-2000/4 has a typical power consumption of a mere 10W.
The FT-2000/4 processor supports dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory and delivers up to 34 PCIe 3.0 lanes. The latter allows for a configuration of up to two PCIe 3.0 x16 lanes and two PCIe 3.0 x1 lanes. As a result, the Chinese firm outfits the PKS gaming PC with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a discrete graphics card with 8GB of memory. The Chinese firm didn’t specify the model of the graphics card, but it’ll be interesting to see whether the FT-2000/4 at 10W will be the bottleneck.
On the storage side, the FT-2000/4 can accommodate up to four SATA III ports, which is why the manufacturer advertises support for conventional SSDs and high-capacity hard drives. In terms of connectivity, the PKS gaming PC offers one Gigabit Ethernet port, six unspecified USB ports, one HDMI port, and one DisplayPort output. There’s also dual-display support.
The PKS gaming PC is a domestic product and will likely feature a homegrown operating system, such as UOS (Unity Operating System) or NeoKylin. The caveat with Chinese operating systems is that they are based on some kind of Linux distribution, and there aren’t many native Linux games out there. Software like Wine or CrossOver exists to allow Linux users to run Windows games, but it’s one of those hit-or-miss experiences. However, the PKS gaming PC could probably succeed as an entry-level gaming PC or find its way into gaming cyber cafes where MMOs and MMORPGs prevail over more graphics-intensive titles.
You can spend thousands of dollars on components when building a PC, but it won’t boot without an operating system (OS). Linux is a viable option, but most people prefer Windows because it runs all of their favorite software, including the latest games. And for those who were still holding on, Windows 7 has officially reached its end of life, meaning it won’t get any more support or security updates. Fortunately, you can get Windows 10 for free or cheap, if you know where to look.
Getting hold of the Windows installer is as easy as visiting support.microsoft.com. Whether you’ve paid for Windows 10 already or not, Microsoft lets anyone download a Windows 10 ISO file and burn it to a DVD, or create installation media on a USB drive for free. Once that’s done, you can boot from your installation media and load Windows 10 onto your PC. During the installation process, Microsoft asks for an activation key. You can skip it, but eventually, Windows will start alerting you that your install isn’t activated.
There are many ways to get a Windows 10 activation / product key, and they range in price from completely free to $309 (£339, $340 AU), depending on which flavor of Windows 10 you want. You can of course buy a key from Microsoft online, but there are other websites selling Windows 10 keys for less. There’s also the option of downloading Windows 10 without a key and never activating the OS. But what, if anything, are you missing out if you don’t activate Windows 10? And does your carefully crafted rig face any risks?
Below we outline the top ways you can get Windows 10 — from the cheapest to most expensive — and the downsides of each option.

Upgrade From Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10: Free
Nothing’s cheaper than free. If you’re looking for Windows 10 Home, or even Windows 10 Pro, it’s possible to get Windows 10 for free onto your PC. If you already have a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 a software/product key, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. You activate it by using the key from one of those older OSes. But note that a key can only be used on one PC at a time, so if you use that key for a new PC build, any other PC running that key is out of luck.
To do this with a Windows 10 compatible PC (after backing up your important data, of course) download Windows 10. When asked, select “Upgrade this PC now.” Note that if you’ve recently changed your PC’s hardware, such as the motherboard, Windows may not find the license for you device. That means you’ll have to reactive the OS. Here are Microsoft’s instructions for reactivating Windows 10 after changing PC hardware.
Downsides of Upgrading From Windows 7 or 8
When using an older Windows key to activate Windows 10, you may run into complications if Microsoft isn’t sure whether you’re eligible to update or not. In that case, you’d have to call a number and go through a process of entering your key and getting a code. But that seems to be happening less in recent months and years.
Don’t Activate Windows: Free
If you don’t have a valid key, you can still use Windows 10 for free on your PC even if you don’t activate the OS. I have colleagues who have used non-activated versions of Windows for years without Microsoft ever shutting it down. In this way, you can have Windows 10 Home or Pro running on your PC nearly flawlessly. Nearly…
Downsides of Not Activating Windows
“If the user [installs Windows 10] before activating Windows, they will see an ‘Activate Windows’ watermark on their desktop, as well an experience a limit on Windows 10 personalization options,” Microsoft told Tom’s Hardware in a statement.
Microsoft brands PCs running an unactivated version of Windows 10 with a watermark in the bottom-right corner of the screen. A Microsoft spokesperson told me that activating Windows 10 ensures you have a legitimate copy of Windows 10, and the watermark is an attempt to alert consumers that their version could be false. However, if you downloaded your ISO directly from Microsoft, there’s no way your copy can be a fake.
If you don’t activate Windows 10, you won’t be able to change Personalization options in the Settings menu. That means you can’t choose personal desktop wallpapers, slideshow backgrounds, Start, taskbar, Action Center or title bar colors, light or dark color schemes, font choices or lock screen options.
The lack of custom aesthetics can be a downer, especially if you like to liven things up by changing colors and images. However, we checked, and you can still change your wallpaper if you right-click an image from the web or a personal photo and set it as your wallpaper. And if you have a wallpaper tied to your Microsoft account, it will appear if you sign into Windows with that account.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft won’t offer you any Windows 10 technical support if you don’t activate the OS. If you call or chat with their techs, they’ll start off by asking you for your key, and you’ll have no response.
Use the Microsoft Student Discount: Free
Microsoft offers students attending certain universities and high schools the ability to get Windows 10 for free by allowing them to activate Windows 10 Education for free. Meanwhile, teachers can get Windows 10 Education for $14.99. You can see if your school is eligible and download your free Windows 10 key here. The key is yours even after you graduate.
But is Windows 10 Education any different from Windows 10 Home? It’s actually better. Windows 10 Education is the same as Windows 10 Enterprise, which Microsoft calls the most robust version of Windows 10. The OS has features targeting security, device control and management and deployment that Windows 10 Home lacks. Unlike Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Education has client and host remote desktop and remote app i(nstead of client only), Hyper-V (Microsoft’s hypervisor) and extra apps, like AppLocker and BitLocker. Although, it’s likely you won’t ever use any of those bonus features.
If you’re not currently a student but happen to have a .edu email, we don’t recommend scamming the system. In addition to ethical concerns, if you get caught, Microsoft can make you pay up anyway. “False representations of eligibility voids this offer, and Microsoft reserves the right to collect the full price of product(s) ordered,” Microsoft’s policy states.
Downsides of Using the Microsoft Student Discount
If your school is eligible for the discount, there isn’t really a downside to this method of procuring Windows 10 free. Not all colleges / high schools have it, and you may need to make a special user account to download it. But if you can score Windows 10 Education for free, we don’t see any reason not to.
Buy a Cheap Windows 10 Key From a Third-Party Seller: Around $30
If you can’t stand living with the scarlet letter of an eternal watermark or want the comfort of knowing Microsoft won’t disown your PC’s OS should you call for help, you’ll have to buy a Windows 10 key. And while some turn to Microsoft for this purchase, there are third-party websites selling keys for much cheaper than Microsoft. For example, at the time of writing, Kinguin sells Windows 10 Home for about $40, Amazon charges $129.99, Newegg’s pushing it for $89.99 and even Walmart has it for $99.95, as well as a Pro OEM version .
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. While we can’t vouch for all of them, websites selling lower-priced Windows keys are likely selling legitimate codes. One popular site, Kinguin, has 37 merchants worldwide selling Windows keys. Mark Jordan, Kinguin’s VP of communications, told me that their merchants acquire the codes from wholesalers who have surplus copies of Windows they don’t need.
“It’s not a gray market. It would be like buying Adidas or Puma or Nike from a discounter, from TJ Maxx,” Jordan said. “There are no legal issues with buying it from us. It’s just another marketplace.”
According to Jordan, Kinguin’s merchants have sold “several hundred thousand” keys and are not one-time sellers posting listings for codes they don’t want. As part of its fraud protection, a Kinguin employee randomly buys a key “every now and then” to make sure they’re legitimate, he said. Jordan added that it’s rare for a customer to get a key that’s been resold, but if they did, customer support would help them get a new one for free.
“If there’s ever a problem with a key being already activated or something like that, our customer support team helps you get a new key… And that merchant would be in deep trouble, so they are very careful with it,” Jordan said.
It’s worth noting that we’ve encountered reports of customer dissatisfaction, including from users who wanted a specific type of key (like non-OEM only), ended up with something different (like an OEM version) and could only get a refund, rather than the type of key they originally tried to buy.
You’ll have to enter a key to activate Windows, but you won’t have a problem doing that if you bought your key from a place like Kinguin (or Amazon, Newegg, etc.). In fact, Microsoft still offers 24/7 technical support online and via phone even if you got your Windows 10 key from somewhere other than Microsoft.
If you do opt to get your key for less, make sure it’s from a legitimate site. A hint will be if that key is too cheap — i.e. free or close to free. And, as with anything else, if you haven’t heard of a seller, check their ratings or go elsewhere.
No matter where you get your product key, you shouldn’t download Windows 10 from anyone besides Microsoft. As noted on Microsoft’s website: “When buying Microsoft software as a digital download, we recommend that you avoid auction sites and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing sites. At the moment there are a limited number of sites where you can legally purchase digital downloads of Microsoft software.”
“Genuine Windows is published by Microsoft, properly licensed and supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. Non-genuine software results in a higher risk of malware, fraud, public exposure of your personal information and a higher risk for poor performance or feature malfunctions,” Microsoft added in a statement to Tom’s Hardware.
Downsides of Cheap Keys
These non-Microsoft websites have varying return policies for software key purchases. While Kinguin seems to have an open return policy,
Meanwhile, Amazon and Newegg both have no-refund policies for software keys. Amazon claims all keys sold on its site are genuine, and any gripes you have with your key must be handled by the individual vendors. If a key you bought from Newegg doesn’t work, you’ll have to contact Newegg’s product support team to get a new key.
Still, most, if not all, sites seem willing to accommodate you should you get a key that’s already been used or doesn’t work. Again, just make sure you’re buying your key from a legitimate source. For that reason we don’t recommend buying Windows 10 keys from individual sellers (or illegally).
This final downside is only applicable if you want to equip your PC with Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. While I was able to find Windows 10 Home on a number of genuine key-selling websites and Windows 10 Pro on some (although fewer) websites, I couldn’t find a place to download a key for Windows 10 Pro for Workstations anywhere besides Microsoft (Amazon sells it to ship for $293.83). The most advanced and pricey ($309) member of the Windows 10 clan, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations offers “support for the next generation of PC hardware, up to four CPUs and 6TB of memory,” according to Microsoft’s website. But it’s unlikely you’ll need the juggernaut of Windows 10 for your personal machine.
Buy a Windows Key From Microsoft: $139+
Want a version of Windows 10 where you can enjoy dynamic slideshows on your home screen and vibrant red, green, pink, or purple taskbars? Do you enjoy the thrills of a watermark-free screen and the comfort of knowing you can call Microsoft support if you have any problems? Then you need a key, which, as discussed, you can get from various retailers. But if you want to avoid any chance of getting an unusable key or want the guaranteed ability to get a full refund even if there’s no problem with the key, your best bet is buying from Microsoft.
In addition to selling keys for Windows 10 Home and Pro, Microsoft is the only place you can get a key for Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. Additionally, Microsoft offers the Assure Software Support Plan for an extra $99 (£95/ AU$120). This plan is valid for a year after activating Windows 10. It’s applicable for up to five devices and entitles you to online and phone support and one-on-one in-store training. One caveat: Microsoft says the plan is “for purchase and activation only in the region in which it was acquired.”
Downsides of Buying from Microsoft
Microsoft charges the most for Windows 10 keys. Windows 10 Home goes for $139 (£119.99 / AU$225), while Pro is $199.99 (£219.99 /AU$339). Despite these high prices, you’re still getting the same OS as if you bought it from somewhere cheaper, and it’s still only usable for one PC.
Plus, the premium price doesn’t entitle you to any support perks. Microsoft’s 24/7 basic phone and online support is available to anyone with a Windows 10 key, even those who didn’t get it from Microsoft. After already investing time and money building a PC , it can be difficult to convince yourself to spend over $100 for an OS that you can get with the same specs and support for cheaper.
What’s the Best Way to Get Windows 10?
If you have an old Windows key you can get Windows 10 free by carrying that key over from a previous build — that’s your best option.
If you don’t have a key on hand, you need to decide whether you’re comfortable using an unactivated version of Windows 10, which limits your customization options, has an ugly watermark and leaves you ineligible for Microsoft support. Many would argue that downloading Windows without paying for or already owning a product key is ethically wrong. That said, Microsoft has made this process easier over various Windows iterations and lessened the limitations and nagging that happens when you don’t activate. The company isn’t trying to close this loophole, probably because it’s more interested in driving user numbers. I’ve even seen well-known vendors and Microsoft partners do press presentations with watermarks on their desktop.
If you must buy a Windows 10 key, you can save a lot with a low-cost seller such as Kinguin, although customer service may be lacking. Microsoft’s price is astronomically high and doesn’t offer any significant benefits. You can save $100 or more by buying a key from one of these third-party sites, which is money you can spend on one of the best graphics cards, a roomier SSD, or a few AAA games for your new PC.

A bug in the macOS recovery can disable MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or Mac mini with Apple’s M1 chip: The reinstallation may get stuck with a message about an error in “Personalization”, as Apple now does – in response to corresponding problem reports from users – in a support document.
Workaround without a second Mac The English version of the warning dialog reads “An error occurred while preparing the update. Failed to personalize the software update. Please try again”, in this case reinstallation of the operating system is no longer possible via the in macOS integrated recovery mode possible, as first buyers noticed last week. So far, a complete recovery of the Mac has been traded as a way out – this requires a second Mac.
But even without a second Mac, a Mac that is paralyzed during reinstallation can be disabled Put the M1-Mac back into operation, as Apple explains in the support document that was previously only available in English. To do this, users must use the command line in the macOS recovery and follow a guide consisting of a total of 17 steps. If help is needed or the workaround does not help, users should contact Apple Support.
Bootable USB stick also helps Alternatively, it is also possible to use a bootable USB stick or a bootable installation program to run macOS 11 Big Sur on an affected Reinstall Mac. The boot stick must of course already be presented or freshly created using another Mac.
Apple’s support document suggests that the reinstallation problems can only arise if on the ARM Mac the pre-installed macOS 11. 0 is still running. According to user reports, however, there could still be problems with the recovery with macOS 11. 0.1.
Developer Lucas Holt has released version 2.0 of his operating system, MidnightBSD, named after his cat. Unlike the “distributions” GhostBSD, NomadBSD or the recently discontinued FuryBSD, MidnightBSD is not based on a current FreeBSD, but is a fork of the FreeBSD 6.1 beta 2005. It is comparable to DragonflyBSD, which the developers around Matt Dillon created as a fork of FreeBSD 4.8.
Of course, with a fork you can use the Progressive development of FreeBSD does not always take over 1: 1 into the own system, but has to add innovations and security patches by hand. That means an immense amount of work – and as a short test run showed, MidnightBSD 2.0 has numerous construction sites.
mports – its own port management MidnightBSD 2.0 brings some innovations, for example LLVM 8.0.1, an improved ELF toolchain, an OpenSSL 1.0.2u from a year ago, some firmware updates and little things like parallel ZFS mounts or logging terminated jail IDs. The complete list of all new features and improvements can be found in the release notes for MidnightBSD 2.0 on the project website (which was not available at the time this message was published). An upgrade from the previous version MidnightBSD 1.2 is problematic according to the developer.
Already during the installation (selecting the system components) you notice that MidnightBSD instead of the FreeBSD port management “ports” was developed by Holt himself “mports” port manager used. “mports” already caused problems with MidnightBSD 1.x. The MidnightBSD 2.0 installer is very similar to that of FreeBSD 11, but has a few additional options and some Set different preferences.
Compared to FreeBSD 11 you can with MidnightBSD 2.0 select additional shells when creating a user account, Holt has entered the rather unusual “mksh” (MirBSD Korn Shell) as a default.
Desktop OS without desktop The attempt to install the desktop is prevented by an error which the author of this message already noticed in MidnightBSD version 1.0 (and thus over two years ago!): The Install -Script cannot find package “midnightbsd-destkop”. No wonder: It should logically be called “midnightbsd-desktop”.
Such an error does not match an operating system that appears in the first sentence on the project page as “… developed with desktop users in mind “.
Because of a typo, can MidnightBSD, developed for desktop users, has only been installed by means of contortions for two years now.
(Image: screenshot)
Guesswork until after midnight If you then try to install the correct package yourself, you will find that MidnightBSD, unlike FreeBSD, does not have a “pkg “used for package management, but the self-developed” mports “. A
mport install midnightbsd-desktop , peppered with numerous error messages about non-existent packages, does not lead to success either. The installer aborts with the following error message:
Unable to install midnightbsd-desktop-2.5: Error at / usr / src / lib /libmport/check_preconditions.c:(235): midnightbsd-desktop depends on bash, which is not installed. This is wrong, however, because a GNU Bash 5.0. 18 _ 2 is already installed. Anyone looking for help in a first-class documentation that is actually typical for BSDs will only find an almost dead forum.
End with Horror At this point at the latest, many desktop users should give up in exasperation. And even those who are firmly in the BSD saddle have to look for good arguments for a long time to invest more time in the downright “configured” MidnightBSD.
Free, Net and OpenBSD can be quickly changed expand by a desktop, to get started with GhostBSD and NomadBSD. MidnightBSD, on the other hand, is more of a good example that it is almost impossible for a single developer, even with a lot of good will, to handle the (further) development and maintenance of a modern operating system on his own. In a video for MidnightBSD 2.0 on YouTube, Lucas Holt indicates the difficulties more than clearly.
If you still want to take a look at MidnightBSD 2.0, you will find installation images for amd 64 and i 386 in ISO and img format on the mirror servers (if functional).
Apple has released troubleshooting tips for an extremely annoying problem: Certain older Macs can suddenly freeze when installing macOS Big Sur. This makes the machine unusable, users can then neither forward nor backward – i.e. not even downgrade to an older macOS.
Computer goes on strike completely The bricking problem affects MacBook Pro machines that end 2013 as well as middle 2014 and over 13 inches large screens. With these it happens that the installer suddenly stops with the message that the update could not be “installed on this computer”. It can get even worse: Then the Mac starts up with a blank screen with a warning sign (crossed out circle) on it and nothing happens.
If one of the two variants occurs, Apple recommends a multi-stage procedure. First the computer must be switched off. To do this, press the power button for at least ten seconds. Then all external devices should be removed – screens, USB accessories and cards in the SDXC slot. Now the Mac is turned on. According to Apple it should then be able to be switched on again.
Standard Troubleshooting or Genius Bar Alternatively, Apple sets two standards Troubleshooting measures close at hand: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and a reset of NVRAM or PRAM. If all three attempts have failed, affected users only have to visit an authorized repair shop or the Genius bar in an Apple store.
Apple’s support document suggests that the three recommended methods do not have to be the last word in wisdom. It says the article will be updated as soon as more information is available – this means that the company’s engineers are continuing to work on the problem. macOS Big Sur also has problems installing on other machines: With the brand new M1 Macs, it is currently not possible to restart the operating system. Asus is launching its fourth Chromebox this year. The desktop computer with Google’s ChromeOS operating system appears in two versions: one with Celeron and one with Core-i processors. The former is always the dual-core Celeron 5205 U, while the latter is a Core i3 – 10110 U (2 cores, 4 threads) or the four-core Core i5 – 10210 U or Core i7 – 10510 U are available for selection. In addition, the first version is equipped with 4 GB of RAM, which can be upgraded to up to 8 GB. The Core-i models offer 8 GB of RAM ex works, which users can expand to 16 GB.
Asus’ Chromebox 4 also has differences in the connections: The Celeron model has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 type on the back A (5 GBit / s), the Core i variant offers three of these. Instead, the first version has two USB 2.0 ports. In addition, both devices have one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C, two HDMI connections and one RJ – 45 for ethernet. On the front of both models there is also USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type A along with a 3.5 mm jack socket for audio output and input as well as a micro SD card reader.
eMMC-Flash or SSD In the case of mass storage, the Celeron variant can be equipped with a 32 to 64 GByte eMMC module equip, alternatively both systems have an M.2 SSD with 64 or 256 GByte capacity to choose from. In addition, the Chromebox 4 already has a WLAN module for the Wi-Fi 6 network (802. 11 ax) and integrated with Bluetooth 5.0. A VESA adapter is also included in the package. However, this does not apply to the keyboard and mouse adapted to Chrome OS, users have to purchase them separately.
Like all Chrome devices, the software comes from Google. At the start, the Chromebox 4 appears exclusively in North America, but Asus then also offered its predecessor in Germany. The prices depend on the equipment, the cheapest variant costs 289 US dollars. Although end users can also purchase the systems, the manufacturer advertises them primarily for the educational sector and companies. Schools in particular represent a growing market for Google’s Chromebooks, 2020 sales increased significantly.
Bug fixes seem to make it necessary: For Mac and iPhone, operating system updates are available again and out of sequence – but only for certain machines. Apple has republished the current macOS version Big Sur . 0.1. Instead of the previous build variant 20 B 29 it now carries the Number 20 B 50.
Two starter versions for Intel and ARM Macs It is currently not yet clear what changes will be made. The fresh build only seems to show up to those users who have not yet updated to macOS 11. 0.1. These are either Intel Mac users who still work with macOS Catalina or earlier operating systems – or users with ARM Macs who have just unpacked their machine and have not yet updated.
While for Intel Macs macOS 11. 0.1 was the first official version of Big Sur, the M1 machines come standard with macOS 11. 0, you have to update to macOS 11 .0.1. This week it was announced that Big Sur is making a regular reinstallation impossible on ARM Macs – it is still unclear whether the new build will solve this problem.
Certain iPhones get an update iOS is still available 14. 2.1, the again only for iPhone 12, 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max is offered. Older iPhones stay with iOS 14. 2. Apple provides an instruction leaflet that describes a total of three errors that the update should fix. MMS messages on the current iPhones, which sometimes did not arrive so far, should now be able to be received normally. Apple does not write whether a problem with missing SMS signaling has also been fixed – it is to be hoped.
Furthermore, hearing aids with “Made for iPhone” certification should now deliver normal sound quality from smartphones – here there were sometimes massive disturbances up to loud sounds. Furthermore, Apple writes to have fixed a lockscreen problem on the iPhone 12 mini. Here, the screen sometimes did not react as desired when it was locked – in addition to swiping up, this also affected the activation of the flashlight and camera icons. It is unclear whether iOS 14. 2.1 also contains security-relevant fixes – Apple’s information page on fixing security gaps has not yet provided any information.

RESUME Today’s technology delivers fast, pocket-sized speeds. Investing in a piece of storage that can also be used for more than just a backup is more than convenient. The Samsung T5 external SSD is recommended for a good backup of a nice collection of music.
PLUS POINTS Versatile Reliable Format Speed
We listen music with z all more and more via the various streaming services. Spotify, Tidal, Soundcloud, Apple Music – you name it. Sometimes it seems as if no one has any music carriers at home. Or is it?
There is a discrepancy to begin with. The audio enthusiast knows that music via those streaming services is often compressed enormously. A streaming service for – and point of sale for – music that does focus on audio quality is for example Qobuz. It is also possible to buy high quality music there. And there are plenty of other places online where it is possible to buy high quality music. Many of us at the editorial office therefore have a server or NAS at home for the storage of that music. We can also use it as a source to stream music over the network. A common set-up among music and film lovers, but it does require a backup: a backup!
Backup Importance As a hard drive in your server or NAS decides to retire, then you can wave to your music. You will not get it back. A possibility to at least partially overcome this is with a Raid configuration, but it is best to always make a backup of your valuable digital collection. And preferably several, because one backup is not a backup.
For that reason today we are going to get started with a Samsung T5 portable SSD. Samsung has been the market leader in SSD storage for several years. The brand’s Evo series has also won multiple awards. The Samsung T5 is very small in size. The device literally fits in your palm. Thanks to the housing, the T5 is shockproof, password-protected and uses Samsung V-NAND flash memory.
The use of large, heavy and often slow mechanical hard drives is no longer entirely of this time. This is mainly aimed at the really large amounts of storage in servers. The demand for faster information transfer, on the other hand, is growing day by day. The Samsung T5 has a USB3.1 gen2 connection and a transfer speed of up to 540 mb per second. This makes it possible to watch or listen to music and films directly from an external SSD. Running an operating system externally is possible, or games.
SSD Vs. HDD So what are the advantages of an SSD compared to an HDD? A Solid State Drive no longer has any moving parts. It is stored on flash memory chips. That provides much more speed. The energy consumption is very low, an SSD is more reliable and has little or no noise production.
An HDD or Hard Drive Disk is a magnetic metal disk. It is ‘written’ and read by an arm, like on a record player. Since it is mechanical, it does make noise. Searching and writing is also done physically, so slowly. The energy consumption is also a lot higher.
For this review we are going to back up Make a small 747 gigabytes of music. We connect the Samsung T5 to the Synology for this 215 + NAS. Next, we need to format the external drive so that we can use the T5 external SSD. We select all music and copy it to the T5 SSD. A real life test, just as you could use the external SSD at home. We can see that the time changes quite a bit.
Samsung has developed this external SSD for a large target group. Because the T5 is handy, you can take it with you. The option to protect the SSD with a password via an Apple or Windows computer will also appeal to many people. Looking at the performance, we see that a small file (10 mb) at a rate of 526 mb per second is written. For larger files – read: a file of 5 gigabytes or larger – we arrive at a 421 mb per second. The reading speed is also comparable. Those are great scores, for impatient people.
The full music backup finally takes just under four hours. That is quite fast, an HDD mechanical hard disk cannot do that very quickly. Nice even if it ever needs to be restored.
Better safe than sorry A good backup is worth its weight in gold. A second backup even even more. Something a music lover or collector with a nice digital collection should have. We experienced that ourselves years ago, because then we lost a lot . We cannot emphasize the usefulness and necessity enough, but with an SSD there is an extra advantage. This can be can easily be connected to the radio in the car, provided it is equipped with a USB connection. So you have all your own music at hand, in good quality, even when you’re on the go.
Conclusion A good backup is a must, especially for the audio (and film) enthusiast. Today’s technology provides high speeds in pocket format. Investing in a piece of storage that can also be used for more than just a backup is more than convenient. Especially if the reliability is high. The Samsung T5 external SSD is recommended for a good backup of a beautiful collection of music.
The Polish game company has the system requirements for the upcoming action role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 updated. The development studio announced details of the requirements for the first time in September. As can be seen from the new specifications, there will be no support for AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 (XT) for the time being. CD Projekt Red has already announced that it intends to do this in the future. If you want to play cyberpunk 2060 with ray tracing, you need a resolution of 1080 p at least one GeForce RTX – 2060 – graphics card with 6 GB VRAM. In addition, 16 GB RAM and an Intel Core i7 4790 or an AMD Ryzen 3 3200 G required.
Anyone who enters the world of cyberpunk with a resolution of 1440 p and the GFX-Settings RT Ultra would like to immerse, a GeForce RTX 3070 with 8 GB VRAM installed in his computer. The CPU is an Intel Core i7 6700 or an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 provided. For the main memory 16 GB are required. In order to display the premier class RT Ultra with 2160 p, all gamers must have at least one NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 – GPU with 10 call GB VRAM your own. Both for the minimum requirements and for RT Ultra, the Polish game manufacturer recommends an SSD with at least 70 GB of free space and a Windows 10 With 64-bit. If you are currently still using Windows 7 for your gaming rig, you will be able to use Cyberpunk 2077 to play with minimal settings. However, using the operating system, which is now over eleven years old, is not recommended.
CD Projekt Red also released a new episode of the cyberpunk format Night City Wire. The episode began with the unveiling of a trailer focused on Johnny Silverhand and the connection he shares with V – the game’s protagonist. This was followed by a behind-the-scenes video in which Keanu Reeves talks about his transformation into the rebel rocker boy of Night City, including voice and motion capture recordings.

We tested with training sessions of run the Huawei Watch Fit smartwatch. Despite its compact size and low cost, it offers everything you need to keep track of your outdoor workouts
of Paolo Corsini published on 23 November 2020 , at 13: 01 in the Wearables channel Huawei
The compact size and the screen developed mainly in height can represent strengths in the use of Huawei Watch Fit during outdoor sports activities ? To answer this question, and to evaluate in the field how much this smartwatch makes available to the user passionate about outdoor activities, we tried Watch Fit in some outdoor running sessions.
We have published a review of this smartwatch in recent weeks, to which we refer for all the features related to daily use for notification tools. In this article we will therefore go into depth on the functional characteristics related to running and to how Watch Fit can be useful to the occasional runner or to the more passionate one .
Thanks to Lite OS the autonomy is very high
The characteristics of this product are the same as those of the other smartwatches that Huawei offers on the market. The use of the Lite OS operating system associates this product with the others of the Asian company: its strong point is the energy efficiency that it can make available, allowing you to use the smartwatch for a long time without the need
Sports activities always put battery autonomy to the test in products of this type and the small overall size of the Huawei Watch Fit leaves no room for a battery large in size. Nevertheless we used Watch Fit for 5 consecutive days on a single charge , including in each of these days a outdoor running session for an average of 50 minutes per day enabling GPS and heart rate detection: an undoubtedly very valid result, difficult to replicate with other smartwatches based on different architecture or operating system.
Watch Fit provides different sensors to detect outdoor activities , starting from the now inevitable GPS combined with optical heart rate sensor . Huawei has also integrated a blood oxygen saturation level meter , which is not so useful for medical diagnosis and to confirm the level of acclimatization once you have moved to altitude.
Simple and intuitive in running use
For the lover of outdoor sports, running in particular, we find in Huawei Watch Fit everything you need like the rest of what is seen with the other most recent smartwatches of the company. A few presses on the touch screen and here it is possible to start the activity , after the few seconds necessary for the GPS integrated to connect to satellites. The APP installed on our smartphone will periodically update the smartwatch providing the updated satellite positions: this allows you to lock the satellites at the start of activity in a few seconds, not forcing you to wait a long time before the smartwatch is ready to record.
The OLED screen has a mainly vertical development: the very high contrast allows you to clearly read the information during use even in the presence of strong ambient lighting, with the possibility of adjusting the brightness automatically or manually. The display provides an indication of the time spent in activity, the average pace per km, the distance and heart rate directly on the main screen; it is then possible to monitor a subsequent screen accessible by scrolling along the touch screen also to the cadence data and to the effect on the performance of the training in terms of aerobic and anaerobic
Watch Fit allows you to select some predefined workouts , which alternate recovery sequences with others at a higher intensity: , however, it is not possible to manually configure a workout with variable intervals , such as a repetition session, by making sure that the various intervals are reported by the smartwatch. This can only be achieved if we keep the km, or its multiples, as a unit of measurement since the automatic lap every km is signaled by the clock: if instead we want to carry out a training with recovery not in km but in time (example: 5x1km recovery 3 minutes jogging) we will not be able to use the watch as a reference for the changes of the various phases.
summary of a training session provided by the Huawei Health APP
Through the Huawei Health APP it is possible, at the end of the training, to have a summary of all the recorded data: the values are graphically expressed in a very clear way and it is possible have the APP generate a summary scheme like the one shown here, containing all the measured values including cadence, heart rate and pace instant by instant.
Heartbeat and GPS always accurately detected
The heart rate sensor and GPS proved to be accurate in use : in comparison with the data detected by a Garmin sportwatch combined with a chest heart rate monitor, no significant differences were highlighted, even with a workout like that of the summary images above reported (a 3x4km session with recovery 2 ‘at the pace and 1’ jog). If for the GPS track generally the differences between different smartwatches tend to be very small, it is not common to find heart rate sensors that are taken during the course of an intense activity, especially if not by companies that have always been involved in the world of sportwatch. Huawei Watch Fit therefore surprises positively in this but similar dynamics we had also experienced in the analysis of other models of the Asian company in similar conditions of use.
The only real limitation of this product remains the one already highlighted with the other proposals based on the Lite OS operating system: the inability to export your training sessions to third-party platforms . Huawei has chosen to keep its ecosystem closed from this point of view, a choice that is limiting only for that group of enthusiasts who want to use other shared platforms (such as Strava) to keep track of their workouts. remaining as offered in Huawei Health, on the other hand there is certainly no lack of clear and complete reports.
The summary metrics are always available. guide us to better understand what our level of post-training condition is : from the indication of the estimate of VO2Max to the effect of training in terms of aerobic condition, up to recovery time required before being able to undergo another demanding session. All this is combined with the stress monitoring and the ) quality of sleep , indispensable parameters to be able to keep your physical condition under control and in this way balance the intensity of the training you will undergo .
Huawei Watch Fit therefore offers a lot to the sports enthusiast too, but it caters for features, design and low cost to the public of those who carry out sports training indoors in the gym but do not disdain , especially during the summer, spending time outdoors training on the go and wanting to continue to reliably and in detail keep track of what has been done. All at a price that is comparable to that of entry level sportwatches on the market, from which it stands out for its design and package of features typical of a modern smartwatch.
