Samsung regains top smartphone vendor spot as Xiaomi overtakes Apple

Samsung is back on top as the world’s biggest smartphone vendor one quarter after losing its spot to Huawei, according to reports from IDC, Counterpoint, and Canalys. The news comes just as Samsung posted its highest quarterly revenue figures ever, which the company said was helped by a boost in demand for smartphones.

Huawei became the number one vendor for the first time three months ago, benefiting from strong sales in China while much of the rest of the world was operating under constrained retail conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Huawei’s shipments fell 7 percent quarter-on-quarter and 24 percent year-on-year, according to Counterpoint, while Samsung’s shipments increased by 47 percent over the last quarter.

Xiaomi was able to regain the number three spot for the first time in several years, overtaking Apple for the first time with year-on-year growth of 46 percent. Apple’s shipments fell 7 percent year-on-year in the July-September quarter, no doubt affected by the fact that its new iPhones this year slipped until October and November release dates.

The fifth, sixth, and seventh spots go to BBK brands Oppo, Vivo, and Realme. Counterpoint has Oppo at number five, while IDC and Canalys give that spot to Vivo, but all three firms agree the numbers are close. If the three independent brands’ third-quarter shipments were combined, they would be closer to Samsung in first place than Huawei in second place.

HeyMelody app lets you update the firmware on your OnePlus and Oppo TWS headset

OnePlus has published an early access version of the HeyMelody app, which can be used to update the firmware of several True Wireless headsets. The main difference between it and the OnePlus Buds app is wider support.

HeyMelody supports OnePlus’ Buds and Buds Z, as well as a couple of Oppo Models – Enco W51 and Enco X. You can use the app to pair the buds, check their battery levels and, of course, update their firmware.

But wider support doesn’t just mean support for more buds, this app works on more phones too. The OnePlus Buds app can be installed only on the company’s own phones and only the newer models – anything older than a OnePlus 6 is a no-go.

In contrast, HeyMelody works on other brands of phones, including older devices. It requires Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but that’s pretty ancient by now.

counterpoint:-samsung-reclaims-top-spot-in-india-as-country-sees-record-smartphone-shipments

Counterpoint: Samsung reclaims top spot in India as country sees record smartphone shipments

Smartphone makers shipped a record-setting 53 million units in India this quarter, reports Counterpoint Research. This is a growth of 9% year over year (YoY). “The Indian smartphone market is on a recovery path as the lockdown restrictions have been relaxed,” said Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh. Still, most people prefer to shop online.

Xiaomi pipped Samsung to become the top brand in India in 2018, but now the Korean company has reclaimed first place. Samsung shipments grew 32% compared to Q3 last year, surpassing even pre-COVID levels. The company has been the quickest to recover from the market downturn, with online distribution playing a major role.

Former leader Xiaomi fell 4% year over year. Manufacturing constraints are partly to blame for the decline, but the analysts believe that the strong demand for the Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9 series will help the company bounce back up next quarter.

Note – Xiaomi’s numbers include the Poco brand, which crossed the 1 million smartphones shipped for the first time in Q3, thanks the M2, M2 Pro and X3.

vivo is maintaining third place as strong demand for Y-series phones delivered a 4% increase in shipments. Rival Realme also saw a 4% increase with a focus on budget phones (C-series), but also a strong performance in the mid-range segment, where the company saw a 52% YoY boost in shipments thanks to phones in the Realme 6 and 7 family.

Oppo cinched fifth place, its shipments are up 30% YoY. OnePlus remains the top brand in what Counterpoint calls the “affordable premium” segment (INR 30-45,000) thanks to the OnePlus 8. Meanwhile, the OnePlus Nord was the best-selling model in its segment (INR 20-30,000).

Still, Apple edged out OnePlus in the INR 30,000+ segment and this is just with iPhone SE (2020) and 11 sales. The analysts believe that the iPhone 12 models will help Apple extend its lead.

The feature market saw a 5% bump YoY, led by Itel, followed by Samsung and Lava. Itel’s parent company, the Transsion Group, owns the Itel, Infinix and Tecno brands, which saw a combined increase of 73% YoY and are focused on the budget segment. Itel was the top smartphone brand in the sub INR 4,000 segment and it is the top feature phone brand as well.

Starting in Q4, a 10% Basic Customs Duty will be imposed on display modules and touch panels. This will impact imported phones (which make up the majority of shipments in India), but Counterpoint’s analysts believe will boost local manufacturing.

oppo-k7x-coming-on-november-4-with-a-big-battery

Oppo K7x coming on November 4 with a big battery

Oppo is bringing a new smartphone to its lineup of midrangers – the K7x 5G. The launch is scheduled for November 4 and while we don’t know any actual specs about the phone, the company says it will have “lots and lots of power”.

We can clearly see a rectangle island on the back for the camera but even when we tinkered with the brightness of the image, we couldn’t make out the number of shooters or how they’re going to be aligned.

Rumors are the phone has already appeared on TENAA under the model number PERM00 with a 6.5” LCD of Full HD+ resolution and 20:9 ratio. The battery has 5,000 mAh capacity but the listing says nothing on the rate of fast charging. We expect the Oppo K7x to be a more affordable alternative to the regular K7 5G that was announced for CNY1,999 ($285/€240).

new-oppo-phone-might-arrive-with-snapdragon-870-chipset

New Oppo phone might arrive with Snapdragon 870 chipset

Qualcomm is about to launch the Snapdragon 875 chipset in December, and we expect a “lite” version of the flagship platform to tag along. It will sit as a more affordable chip that can offer pretty similar performance, while missing on a few features.

The leakster that goes by the (machine-translated) name Digital Chat Station revealed Oppo is developing a smartphone that will have that new chip with a working name Snapdragon 870.

The new chipset by Qualcomm will be able to reach 3.2 GHz speed of the CPU, and we assume this will be only one super-powerful core and not a cluster of units. Theoretically, the leakster says it will be more powerful than the Snapdragon 865 but still won’t be a match in raw performance to the SD875.

With more people finding flagship chipsets an overkill – it would make sense for Qualcomm to diversify its premium offerings, but we’ll be on the lookout for more clues as to what exactly will separate the alleged 870 and the outright flagship 875.

Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite in FCC – we know the look and specification of the watch

Xiaomi is very efficient at moving both in the segments of smart mobile devices and all kinds of wearable gadgets. The Mi Band bands offer a great design and specification for relatively little money. The issue of watches looks a bit worse. Xiaomi Mi Watch, despite its attractive form and very good technical specification, cannot stand out above the competition. This is due to the high valuation of the product. The manufacturer does not think to let go of the aforementioned market segment and is preparing a strong blow. No, I’m not talking about another expensive watch, but about the economical version of the current model, i.e. the Mi Watch Lite. Timer passed FCC certification.

Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite smart watch has passed FCC certification. We already know the appearance of the device and its partial technical specification.

Review of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 smartband – invariably invincible

Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite looks like Apple Watch and OPPO Watch. The edges are much more rounded than in the first generation of the device. The equipment will be equipped with 1, 41 – inch rectangular screen (I suppose – OLED) that supports touch. The brightness of the display is regulated by the operation of the light sensor, the battery with a capacity 230 mAh can be charged with 5 W. There is also a built-in GPS, working 24 hours a day heart rate monitor and water resistance to a depth of 50 meters. The equipment is able to detect user activity, including swimming.

Samsung Galaxy Watch3 smartwatch test – fitness rich

For Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite we will be able to use Android smartphones from 4.4 up and Apple iPhones running iOS 10 up. There is no certainty about the time of the premiere yet, but it is said that the watch may debut later this year. Will this happen, the next few weeks will show. Perhaps Xiaomi is slightly holding back the presentation due to the upcoming Christmas shopping frenzy, which usually begins at the end of November. As I suppose, it will also hit Polish store shelves soon.
