some-of-the-new-macbook-air-function-keys-have-different-functions

Some of the new MacBook Air function keys have different functions

Apple’s MacBook Air is one of a collection of the company’s computers to receive the newly announced M1 chip today. The beloved laptop appears almost identical from the outside, but if you open it up you’ll notice the familiar keyboard has changed. Apple’s traded out some of the function keys on its new MacBook Air, adding in new ones for Spotlight, Do Not Disturb, and Dictation.

The last time the functionality of the MacBook Air keyboard changed was to add Touch ID for securing passwords and payment details. This change goes further, removing the brightness keys for the keyboard along with the Launchpad key that pulled up macOS’s SpringBoard-inspired app launcher.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first noticed the change and shared the new layout in this tweet:

The new MacBook Air has updated keyboard function keys, adding Spotlight, Dictation, and Do Not Disturb – replaces Launchpad and Keyboard brightness. pic.twitter.com/1BM6wTWQZh

— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) November 10, 2020

All three of those functions required keyboard commands or accessing the Notification Center to use — this change should make them easier to access. I know I typically don’t adjust my keyboard brightness, so making that adjustment an extra step away doesn’t seem like too much of an ask. Similarly, I don’t know anyone who uses Launchpad to launch apps, so a dedicated key doesn’t seem necessary anymore. This isn’t quite as dramatic a design change as the temporary move to butterfly switches, nor should it impact the actual usability of the laptop, but future users will have to judge it for themselves.

We’ll have a review soon, but if you’re interested in seeing these new keys for yourself, the new MacBook Air is available for purchase today and ships next week, starting at $999.

deutsche-post-dhl-transported-367-million-parcels-in-the-third-quarter

Deutsche Post DHL transported 367 million parcels in the third quarter

Deutsche Post DHL delivered 367 millions more parcels than expected in the third quarter. The company was able to compensate for weaknesses in the advertising business by increasing transports by , as shown by the recent drop in the box office. At the beginning 2020 the company was assuming a parcel growth of 5 percent.

Sales in the “Post & Parcel Germany” division increased by 3.4 percent to 3.8 billion euros in the period from July to September compared to the same period in the previous year, the operating result rose from 304 million to 320 million euros. Without a corona bonus of 300 euros per employee and a collectively agreed one-time payment, it would have been even higher.

New app on the march? According to Swiss Post, the growth in the parcel sector was able to decrease volumes in the mail sector – especially from Asia and the other European countries – balance. In the past three months, Swiss Post transported 1 16 billion letters within Germany, 5.6 percent fewer than a year ago. The dispatch of advertising messages decreased by 12, 5 percent to 1, 96 Billion pieces back.

The Group’s total sales rose in the third quarter by 4.4 percent to 16, 2 billion euros. Since things went very well in areas such as the express business and were operated much more profitably there, the net profit even increased by around half to 851 million euros.

In the spring it became known that the Post wanted to facilitate the sending and receiving of letters and parcels with a digitization offensive. In this context, a new mobile app for sending and receiving letters and parcels could be released by the end of this year, which may clear up the existing mess of the various DHL / Post apps.

PSA: Epic will honor V-Bucks trapped on Apple platforms

With everything else going on, you may have momentarily forgotten Epic Games and Apple’s on-going legal battle over the Fortnite creator’s alternative payment system that got it booted off the App Store. The lawsuits are still playing out, but here’s a small positive: Epic announced last Friday that your V-Bucks stranded on the macOS and iOS versions of Fortnite will be honored and credited to your account so you can spend them on other platforms.

Epic says that players who purchased V-Bucks on iOS and macOS should receive their credit by today, November 9th. Those V-Bucks can be spent on any platform that can play Fortnite other than iOS or macOS.

Because Mac & iOS are blocked for Fortnite updates, we’re beginning to grant a V-Bucks bonus for players on these platforms — to spend on any platform. The V-Bucks grant is expected to be completed by November 9th.

— Fortnite Status (@FortniteStatus) November 6, 2020

In case you’re wondering how far the legal battle has come, we’ve got a whole StoryStream and a brief timeline that can catch you up, but an even shorter version is this: Apple was ultimately forced to allow Epic to continue to update the Unreal Engine for developer use, but Fortnite remains off the App Store.

From a gaming perspective, Epic’s battle with Apple has left the iOS and macOS versions of Fortnite a shadow of their former selves. Play outside of Apple’s ecosystem is disabled and the core progression loop that keeps players coming back to the game — the seasonal updates and battle pass system — are inaccessible. Fortnite on Apple platforms never saw this summer’s “Nexus War” Marvel update, nor the series of in-game concerts that followed, and there’s no telling when any of that content might come back. If players want to spend their V-Bucks and stay up-to-date with the game, they’ll have to do so somewhere else.

shopping-at-apple-in-times-of-corona

Shopping at Apple in times of Corona

Apple’s shops are actually meeting places: you not only look at the company’s new products, buy them straight away or get service, but you can also attend free seminars and events. All of this has become completely different in Corona times: the shops are like well-secured fortresses that can only be reached by appointment. In fact, the measures have tightened again – Apple has its own system here, in which the respective local COVID – 19 – numbers and others

It is still possible to get your products – if you know as. The example of the store on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, which a Mac & i editor recently visited, reveals the new system.

Buy in the app, pick up in the store We actually only wanted to purchase a new MagSafe charger that is currently only available online with a waiting period. It should be available on the Kudamm, as announced by the Apple Store app. However, you can’t just walk into the store and take the product with you. You could try, but you are regularly turned away because to go shopping – even if you don’t know what you want – you actually need an appointment with a “specialist”, which you have to book in advance via the app or website.

Since we knew what we wanted, we could 30, 85 – Order the euro part for collection. In Berlin this usually happens on the same day; you can alternatively have products that are on site in the shop delivered to your home at short notice, which we even try to do on the same day (delivery time 19 until 22 o’clock) was offered.

Pay attention to the check-in time The purchase is made entirely in the app, including payment via credit card and co. App can load. All of this already existed before, but the collection system itself has changed in COVID – 19 times. So you look for a “check-in time” in the app, which with us was a good three and a half hours in the future. At this point you have to be at the (and initially not in) the shop. And, very important: Photo ID is mandatory despite the QR code.

There were several queues at the store, to which we were directed. Distance markings on the floor are intended to ensure social distancing, and masking is required outside (the Kudamm is an MNS zone). The queue was moving forward quickly, Apple had well-oiled logistics that day. After a good 5 minutes we came to a security guard who scanned our temperature contactlessly – which Apple is still doing despite criticism of data protection.

Sophisticated queue logistics Then it went into the next line – the one for the actual collection. She guided us to the side entrance of the former cinema, in which the Apple Store Berlin is located. Here we went up two flights of stairs and past the briefing room. Halfway there is a small station where you can buy new products – in this case iPhone 12, 12 Pro and iPad Air 4 –

After another five minutes in the social distancing queue, we got there to a last Apple employee – in the meantime we had had our code scanned at least four times – who pointed us in the direction of a room where the actual pickup at the counter takes place. Again, that didn’t take 30 seconds. What we didn’t succeed: to enter the actual shop. Here we should have queued again, they said – and without a specialist appointment there is no guarantee that it will work. (bsc)

The so-called Refreshments Decree was presented Bis, designed to protect the businesses affected by the restrictive measures currently in force. New aid for companies and VAT numbers located in the red areas and beyond

of Riccardo Robecchi published on , at 18: 02 in the Innovation channel

Business contributions

The so-called Decree Ristori Bis arrived over the weekend, or a collection of measures to support the economy and the company that goes to allocate additional funds and to broaden the audience of those entitled to it compared to the previous Ristori Decree. The total allocation would be equal to almost 3 billion euros and should, according to what was declared by the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, to strengthen “the protection and support network for all economic activities that are located in the areas at greatest risk, in the light of new measures adopted with the last DPCM “.

Given the need for introduce new restrictive measures to slow down the spread of SARS-CoV2, with the consequent imposition of total blocks in some Regions called “red zone”, the Council of Ministers approved the allocation of new funds to protect the affected economic activities as we had foreseen over the past few days.

The Restauration Decree i introduced aid for companies and VAT numbers of specific categories in the form of grants; the activities that will benefit from these contributions increase both by type and by territorial distribution, given that those present in the red and orange areas are favored.

What aid is provided for in the Bis Refreshments Decree?

The new decree establishes the disbursement of non-repayable contributions in the following cases, which are added to those already provided for by the Refreshments Decree:

  • the audience of companies that can benefit from non-repayable grants established by the Refreshments Decree expands to include new categories, including shops (of various types, including clothing and household appliances ), street vendors, personal services, marriage agencies and services for animals.
  • there is a grant for non-repayable companies entities in the Regions identified as “red areas” ; the contribution will be paid in the same way as the previous one and will vary according to the sector of activity: for example, bars, pastry shops and ice cream parlors will see the contributions pass from 150% of the previous decree at 200%;
  • the is ordered to postpone the payment of IRPEF and IRAP , “regardless of the decrease in turnover or fees” . The new date on which these advances must be paid passes to 30 April and involves all the companies forced to close due to the containment measures, a priori compared to the economic results obtained.
  • payments of withholding taxes are stopped and of VAT payments for the month of November, with the new balance date being moved to 16 March 2021 with the possibility of paying in four installments starting from that date;
  • a tax credit is recognized for businesses in the areas red and orange equal to 60% of the lease for the months of October, November and December. This credit is transferable to the owner of the property;
  • the second installment of the IMU is canceled for companies that can receive the new grant and operate in the red areas.

The disbursement of the funds is expected over the next few weeks in a manner similar to those of the previous decrees, or through submission of a specific application on the INPS website.
