CES 2021: TCL unveils first Roku-friendly, truly wireless soundbar

TCL wants to help you banish messy cables and extra remotes with a new smart soundbar that wirelessly connects to Roku TVs.

Launched at CES 2021, the TCL Alto R1 is the TV maker’s first foray into wireless soundbars and the first to feature Roku’s own WiFi Audio streaming technology. Simply plug the power cable in, turn it on and the device automatically pairs with your TCL Roku TV.

No HDMI or optical cable required – in theory, at least. Once the TV has detected the Alto R1, you’ll be walked through a simple on-screen set-up and given the chance to tweak the sound to suit your space.

Aside from cutting down on copper spaghetti, TCL says the device brings “ease of use with only one remote” and “regular and automatic software updates”.

As with wired, Roku-friendly soundbars you’ll be able use your TV’s existing remote to control the sound. You may also benefit from improved audio synching, although that’s yet to be confirmed.

So far, TCL has remained coy about the R1’s specs, price and release date but we do know that it will feature Bluetooth for music streaming. In the meantime, you may want to consider whether you’re willing to risk your cash on a soundbar that is tied to a single smart TV platform.

On the lookout for a wired soundbar? TCL is also launching two wired options in the second half of this year: the Alto 82i and Alto 8e.

The TCL Alto 82i is Dolby Atmos-capable, boasts built-in subwoofers, and support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple AirPlay. The Alto 8e will be bundled with a wireless subwoofer and upfiring Atmos speakers.

During Friday’s presentation of TLC devices, next to TCL smartphones 20 5G and TCL 20 SE, which we wrote about a moment ago, brand accessories also appeared. Among them we saw TCL MoveAudio S headphones 600, TCL MoveTrack pet locator and TCL Wearable Display glasses. Especially the latter, equipped with an OLED panel by Sony, may interest the greatest enthusiasts of new technologies. However, they are to be available at an unspecified time this year. We know, however, that both the headphones and the locator will appear in stores in February and in spring.

TCL introduced the TCL MoveAudio S headphones with useful options 600, TCL MoveTrack animal locator and TCL Wearable Display glasses. Especially the latter, equipped with an OLED panel from Sony, may be of interest to the greatest enthusiasts of new technologies.

Headphones TCL MoveAudio S 600 will appear in stores in February 2021 for the price of 149 euro (~ 680 PLN). The manufacturer advertises the structure as a premium model. In fact, this wireless intrathecal model must be given a wealth of functions. S 600 enjoys the presence of both ANC (active noise reduction) and the presence of the Transparency mode (the ability to hear sounds from the outside without having to remove the headphones, thanks to the microphones). The latter mode will be appreciated especially during phone calls, because hearing our own voice means that we do not unconsciously raise its intensity, which ultimately likes to end up even shouting. The already mentioned ANC works both during conversations (ANC of microphones) and during listening to music (reducing sounds from outside). The manufacturer suggests that the headphones without the ANC option turned on will last for 7 hours on a single battery charge, and the powerbank case will extend this time to 28 hours. The headphones can also be charged wirelessly, they have received the IP resistance class 54, they use Bluetooth version 5.0 BLE and SBC, AAC codecs. AptX is unfortunately missing.

TCL C 71 and TCL C 81 – QLED TVs with Dolby Vision and HDR 10 +

Pet tracker TCL MoveTrack will appear in stores in spring for the price of 99 euros (~ 450 PLN). It may not be the cheapest gadget, but such a one-time expense will certainly prevent many unpleasant experiences that took place especially during the New Year’s Eve (many animals scared by the roar of firecrackers escaped from their owners). The gadget will allow you to attach it to the pet’s collar and, using WiFi and GPS, to view its location in real time. What’s more, a dedicated mobile application will notify us immediately as soon as the pet leaves for 10 meters from us. The app will also allow you to set the so-called “safe zones”, and the tracker itself will also serve as a monitor of the pet’s activity (number of steps taken, meters, etc.). The gadget is equipped with an individual QR code, after scanning which you can reach the owners of the lost quadruped. The screen is also backlit, making it easier to track down the loss at night. The whole has an IP resistance certificate 67, and one battery charge is enough for 14 work days.

TCL plans a smartphone that can be extended to the size of a tablet

Glasses TCL Wearable Display are one of the most interesting TCL offers, but neither the date of availability nor the price has been given yet. This is not another competition for VR goggles, but classic glasses with a built-in dual FullHD micro OLED screen from Sony, thanks to which we will be able to view photos, watch movies or play games. You can connect a smartphone, tablet, laptops and desktops to the structure, as long as these devices offer a USB C port that supports the resolution 1080 p. The device also has support for displaying 3D content. As the manufacturer assures, the whole thing is extremely light, 80% lighter than competing solutions, and the construction itself does not it sticks too tightly to the eyes, and it is at a distance from them, thanks to which we can avoid eye disorders or headaches, and we do not lose contact with the environment. The content you view with TCL Wearable Display glasses can be compared to viewing it on an external screen 140.

TCL 20 5G and TCL 20 SE – The premiere of new, reasonably priced smartphones with Qualcomm Snadpragon series systems

TCL, known primarily for the production of TV sets, introduces two new mobile devices to its product offer, while this year’s line 20 will get a total of five smartphones. TCL 20 5G and 20 SE, which we will talk about in a moment, will be available in Polish stores at the end of January, at the latest in February. Interestingly, these models will also be included in the offers of our telecoms. We will have to wait for the availability of TCL Pro 5G, TCL L and TCL S, so we will focus only on two frescoes, which are a direct continuation of the TCL series 10. These smartphones differ not only in appearance and price, but also, and maybe even above all, extremely different technical specifications.

Let’s start with the weaker one. Yes, the underdog. Let us not be afraid to use this term for budget planners. TCL 20 SE is inexpensive, because it costs only 149 euro (approximately 670 PLN ) smartphone running Android 11 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 460, Adreno artwork 610, 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of eMCP memory. The performance is provided by a battery with a capacity 5000 mAh charged with power 15 When using the USB connector -C. The equipment supports WiFi b / g / n, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and the Dual SIM function. Unfortunately, the latter is a hybrid solution.

TCL C 71 and TCL C 81 – QLED TVs with Dolby Vision and HDR 10 +

Visually TCL 20 SE is doing quite well for this price range. Here we get a large one, as many as 6, 82 – an inch screen with a V-shaped notch for the camera. Unfortunately, the resolution is only 1640 x 720 pixels by aspect ratio 20. 5 : 9. The bezels surrounding the screen are far too wide by today’s standards. The smartphone is quite heavy, as it weighs 206 grams per dimensions 172, 08 x 77, 14 x 9.1 mm. The manufacturer has placed here a photo set consisting of 16 MP wide angle camera with f / 1.7 light, 5 MP ultra wide angle f / 2.2 and 2 MP cameras with f / 2.4 aperture for macro and depth of field detection. TCL 20 5G is a higher model, but as the price suggests 299 euro (approx. 1350, this is a device medium shelf. We can count on a more attractive appearance, smaller frames and a more efficient photographic set. The manufacturer put 6 here, 67 – inch screen with resolution 2400 x 1080 pixels, Qulacomm Snapdragon chip 690, Adreno graphics 619, 6 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 82 or 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The latter can be extended with the use of microSD cards for another 206 GB. A battery that we charge with a strong 18 W, can “boast” capacity 4500 mAh . We will take photos using a photo set consisting of 48 MP wide-angle main unit with f / 1.8 optics, 8 MP ultra-wide angle with f / 2.2 aperture and 2 MP macro units. For selfie photos the MP front module with f / 2.0 light hidden in the dot-shaped screen notch is responsible.

TCL to launch Google TVs this year

TCL will introduce its first Google TV models this year, the company has announced. The Hong Kong-based budget TV maker said at CES 2021 that it will roll out a series of TV sets toting the Google TV smart platform, starting in the US and expanding to other parts of the world later in the year.

As well as offering the Google TV interface – with all the apps and entertainment offerings that encompasses – TCL’s Google TVs will boast cutting-edge display technologies like Mini-LED, 8K and QLED.

Sony is the first big partner for Google TV this year but TCL appears to be not far behind with its choice of smart TV UI for 2021. Google TV was introduced with the most recent Chromecast streaming dongle at the end of 2021 has proved to be an excellent and intuitive option, helping the media streamer earn a perfect five stars in our review.

Google TV comes with over 6500 apps and supports more than 30 streaming services. It’s slick, highly usable and has one of the best recommendation engines we’ve ever tested.

There’s no word yet on pricing or availability of TCL’s Google TV sets. We’ll bring you more when it’s announced.

TCL announces ultra-slim OD Zero Mini-LED TVs

Affordable TV brand TCL has announced a new TV tech, at CES 2021, that allows its sets to be slimmer and better performing than ever. The TCL OD Zero Mini-LED TVs eliminate the optical distance (OD) between the Mini-LED backlight layer and the LCD screen, creating an ultra-thin build and imaging advantages.

The Hong Kong-based firm claims that the tech delivers striking brightness with “even richer colours, precise contrast, and smooth uniformity”. The idea is that by reducing the distance between the light source and the diffuser plate, it reduces refractive errors, helping to minimise haloing and increasing precision.

TCL has, so far, stopped short of announcing any TVs featuring this tech, though. These will be detailed later in the year. It also hasn’t said exactly how slim we should expect this new generation of TVs to be.

TCLs Mini-LED TVs use thousands of mini LED backlights, local dimming zones (adjustable in real time) and a brand new lens design in what the company hopes will be a more nuanced and contrast-rich viewing experience.

It showed off its first Mini-LED TV in 2018, and launched the first consumer model the next year. In 2020, it launched the very affordable 6 Series Mini-LED TV.

The company has reiterated its commitment to 8K and quantum dot technologies which it will develop along with Mini LED.

TCL makes some of the best under-$1,000 TVs you can buy, and it was also early to adopt the Mini LED technology that TV makers like Samsung and LG are only starting to use in their 2021 lineups. (TCL’s 8-Series and 6-Series both already include Mini LED backlighting.) For 2021, the company is hoping to combine its aggressive pricing strategy and technological head start on Mini LED for a new 6-Series that also goes all in on 8K resolution.

“In the year ahead, all 2021 6-Series TCL Roku TV models being launched will feature 8K resolution,” TCL announced in a press release today, noting that last year’s models will remain available as well. TCL’s AiPQ engine will be able to upscale 4K content to higher clarity and sharpness on the new 6-Series. The main problem facing 8K is a dearth of native content at that resolution — and that situation isn’t going to change anytime soon. But it seems like TCL is intent on at least pushing 8K TV prices down. Now the question becomes how much more expensive this 6-Series will be over its predecessor. We don’t know yet.

TCL thinks it’s well ahead of competitors in LCD TV technology, and that’s because of the company’s vertical integration and manufacturing expertise. This year, it’s introducing a new panel branded as “OD Zero” because the gap between the display and backlight system is zero millimeters. The result is what TCL describes as an “ultra-slim display with tens of thousands of Mini LEDs and thousands of contrast control zones.”

After LG announced it would start making LCD TVs with Mini LED, TCL published a prickly blog post that criticized OLED’s low overall market share. “There are TVs with a display technology that hasn’t notably changed since it was first used in TVs in the early 2010s and still only accounts for less than 3 percent of global TV sales,” TCL’s Aaron Dew wrote before talking up the faster evolution of LCD sets and benefits of Mini LED. “To those brands excited to introduce Mini LED in 2021, my only question is ‘what took you so long?”

TCL’s most recent 6-Series received strong reviews and was also a great choice for gamers — though it couldn’t quite pull off 4K resolution at 120Hz. Presumably, that’s something TCL will look to resolve with this upcoming model.

In 2021, TCL will also debut The XL Collection, a lineup of 85-inch displays at different price points and resolutions. Here’s what the company says you can expect:

The 4-Series will be first out of the gate among the XL Collection: it’s coming this quarter for $1,599. Not bad for a huge 4K display. The pricier XL sets with better QLED (quantum dot color) picture quality will come later in the year. Pricing on those is to be announced — and the same goes for the 8K 6-Series.

CES 2021: Samsung unveils 110-inch Micro LED TV

Samsung has presented at CES 2021 the new Television with MicroLED technology from 110 inches , similar to Samsung Walls up to 292 inches, but this time for more domestic use, since they only have of a diagonal of 110 inches. The new televisions Samsung’s MicroLEDs have a panel made up of an inorganic LED that is capable of lighting up by itself, as OLED panels do, and thanks to this an ultra-thin design can be achieved by not depending on additional lighting that thickens the profile of the televisions. LG has also presented new panels with OLED Evo and QNED technology at this same CES 2021.

Fruit of this huge panel and thanks to its Infinity Screen with a 99% of screen, added to the quality of vision of MicroLED technology we achieve a truly immersive viewing experience. Thanks to the screen size, Samsung has integrated a function called Multi View capable of dividing the panel into 4 to display 4 screens at the same time, very useful when putting those sports competitions to the same time.

Samsung’s Lifestyle TV lineup has also been revamped at this CES 2021, these include The Serif, The frame, which is the television with the appearance of a frame in which we can project images simulating a frame while it is at rest, The Sero and The Terrace, a television QLED with 4K resolution for outdoors with a much higher brightness and that makes it more visible in the sun.

LG Display announces its smallest OLED TV panel to date

Looking to buy a small OLED TV in 2021? You’re in luck – LG Display has shared some key specs on the displays it’ll be offering to TV manufacturers in 2021 and the lineup includes a 42-inch panel, the smallest TV-sized OLED screen yet from LG Display.

Looking for a bigger screen – but not quite 88 inches big? The huge South Korean firm is also shipping a new 83-inch panel size, and it’s one that’ll take a starring role in the new Sony 2021 TV line-up – particularly the Bravia XR TV range, unveiled just a few days ago.

As noted by The Verge, that means your OLED TV options this year total seven screen sizes: 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, and 88 inches. And that’s not all – LG Display has said it is also freighting a “next-generation” 77-inch panel that’s a claimed 20 per cent more efficient and thus capable of going brighter than ever before.

Because LG Display is a components manufacturer and doesn’t actually release the finished TVs itself, it’s unclear whose logo you’ll see strapped across the 42-inch OLED TV that’ll doubtless become available this year. LG’s larger Electronics company is yet to fully reveal its 2021 range of OLED TVs, but that’ll likely change very soon, thanks in part at least to CES, the world’s biggest consumer electronics show. WiFi, an increasing amount of RAM and operating systems that allow the installation of additional software, make users expect producers to develop new functions, including video game streaming, for which consoles would no longer be needed. At least to a limited extent. Cooperation with smartphones is also not without significance, which was noted by 63% of the respondents. The ability to control the TV via the telephone is therefore as desirable as the option to transfer photos to the screens.

The Sony Bravia line is one of the more storied in the television market, not least because it used to produce some of the most-shared and appreciated adverts going.

Still, the range also has some great TVs to offer up to this day, and this 32-inch option is one of the most nicely-designed on the market. The picture is also excellent, with HDR pairing nicely with its full-HD resolution.

Cello has a fair few things going for it with this TV – it’s not some huge corporation, and makes its units in Britain, so you can be more confident of its supply chain. That also translates to a seriously impressive price.

The picture is really solid given that budget pricetag, with a Freeview HD built in for convenience. That said, this isn’t such a smart TV than the others listed, so you’ll want a TV box of some sort to pair with it.

Returning to Samsung, our final pick is the most expensive by a distance, and the most interesting – The Frame. Samsung’s designed this QLED display to blend into your home.

That means it can display art while on low-power modes to live up to its name, and become a frame on your wall instead of a black void. We love the idea, and the TV also looks superb in use, with HDR and that QLED display producing beautiful image quality at a smaller size. It won’t be for everyone, but we think The Frame is a bold idea that’s come off well.

Samsung’s sets can often be among the more expensive to most consumers, especially if you’re going for a QLED option. That’s what’s so impressive about the TU8000, which opts for simpler Crystal UHD tech to keep the costs down.

It’s still hardly a budget set, but represents great value for the quality of picture that you end up with, all with Samsung’s high build quality and finish to polish it off. It’s a great option for those looking more in the mid-range.

Sony’s Bravia line may have produced some of the best adverts ever aired, but it’s also got pedigree when it comes to the actual TVs.

This is a great midrange option to round out our list, especially now that it’s typically discounted, and offers really great 4K HDR compatibility. With Freeview Play on board in the UK, you can also get watching TV without needing any external hardware, which is always welcome.

Samsung's Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be the first QLED Chromebook

The rumor mill had already suggested in December that there will be a new Galaxy Chromebook. Now Samsung has officially presented the Galaxy Chromebook 2. It is particularly noticeable because it will be the first Chromebook with a QLED display.

With the first Galaxy Chromebook, Samsung had drawn on the full potential, especially with the display, and installed a 4K AMOLED display . According to Samsung, the 2-in-1 model should actually become more affordable, but at the same time continue to impress as a premium Chromebook. An Intel Core i3 – 10110 U and an Intel Celeron 5205 U should be available as CPU. There are also options for working memory and mass storage: between 4 and 8 GB LPDDR3-RAM and between 64 and 128 GB of memory. A memory expansion using a microSD card is possible. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 has a backlit keyboard and a 720 p-webcam. Its stereo speakers should be able to play relatively loud thanks to each 5 W power and Smart AMP technology. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are supported as well as operation with a USI stylus (optional). The battery of Samsung’s new Chromebook has a capacity of 45, 5 Wh.Samsung gives dimensions of 304, 9 x 203, 2 x 13, 9 mm and a weight of 1, 23 kg.

It is still unclear whether and when the Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be available in this country. The US price should be between 549 and 699 US dollars, depending on the equipment.

At the moment we have no information on availability in Italy, but the base model with Celeron processor 5205 U, 4 GB of RAM and storage of 64 GB will be available in 550 dollars in the United States. Samsung unveils Galaxy Chromebook 2, the first with a QLED display

At last year’s CES Samsung introduced the first Chromebook with an AMOLED screen. This year the company marks another first with the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2, the first of its kind to have a QLED display.

It’s a 2-in-1 device with a 13.3” touchscreen with 1,920 x 1,080 px resolution. The narrow bezels enclose an HDR display. Besides finger input, it also supports an USI Pen (a cross-compatible pen part of the Universal Stylus Initiative), which can detect 4,096 levels of pressure.

It’s not quite as thin and light as its premium sibling from last year, but at 1.23 kg and 13.9 mm it’s still very portable. And the 2020 model started at $1,000.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 costs about half as much, it will start at $550. Though you only get an Intel Celeron 5205U for that price (a 15W CPU, 2 cores, 2 threads, with Intel UHD Graphics). If you want more performance, you can pick a 10th gen Intel Core i3 10110U (still a dual-core CPU but with 4 threads and higher clocks).

The laptop can be configured with 4 or 8 GB of RAM (LPDDR3) and 64GB or 128GB of storage. There’s a microSD slot on board as well. The 45.5 Wh battery promises to last 14 hours of use.

The two 5W speakers are backed by the Smart AMP feature, which is 178% louder than an average amplifier (according to Samsung). For video conferences on Google Meet there’s a 720p webcam. If you prefer to communicate in text, the backlit keyboard has wider keys to reduce the number of typos.

In terms of wireless connectivity, the Chrome OS laptop has Wi-Fi 6 (ax 2×2) and Bluetooth 5.0. The wired side of things features two USB-C ports and a headphone/microphone combo jack.

The Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be available in Fiesta Red and Mercury Gray. The first units will be available in the US before the end of March.
