Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro and IdeaPad 5i Pro – laptops with Intel Tiger Lake, AMD Cezanne, NVIDIA GeForce MX450 and RTX 3000

But not only is demand high, the manufacturers are also struggling with rising prices in production. This starts with the manufacture of the GPUs, the costs for the memory, for the PCB and many other components. AMD's FPGA performance unit and GPU Chiplet patents tear the veil of the future

AMD’s Programmable Execution Unit (PEU) is intended to be placed in the processor core alongside existing integer and floating point units, and multi-chip GPU problems are to be solved with an interposer.

AMD has recently released two new patents that shed light on the company’s current research areas and future plans. However, with regard to patents, it should be borne in mind that a large proportion of patents never end up being sold as such or at all.

The first of AMD’s patents is closely related to the company’s recent acquisition of Xilinx. The “Method and apparatus for efficient programmable instructions in computer systems” patent describes in extremely simplified terms a programmable FPGA unit that would operate alongside the existing integer (INT) and floating point (FP) units and share the same registers with them.

According to the Reddit user marakeshmode analysis, the processors would have one or more PEUs (Programmable Execution Units) that can be programmed on the fly to suit the specific needs of each application. Multiple PEUs can also be programmed simultaneously for different needs, and programmability allows new and exotic computational accuracies and data formats to be utilized on a fast schedule. The processor instruction decoder and the transmitting unit automatically recognize the instructions for the PEU and route them to the correct execution units. When there are no special needs, PEUs can be programmed to compute traditional INT and FP commands alongside normal units.

Potentially, the new execution unit could significantly change the current programming model when, instead of optimizing the program for the processor, the processor could be optimized for the programs.

In AMD’s new patent, communication between chips is implemented through a passive communication network with a separate purpose-designed interposer. The configuration processor communicates only with the first chip of the GPU, which communicates with other chips through the connection network described above. Each chip has its own private L2 cache, which is connected between the Infinity Fabric (Scalable Data Fabric) to the inter-chip communication bus and further to the common, all-chip coherent L3 cache found on each chip. The L3 caches are connected to the memory controllers found on each chip.

Adata has been developing its next-gen DDR5 memory modules to provide users with a meaningful “upgrade in speed, capacity, as well as increased bandwidth per CPU core”. The company has been working on these new modules with MSI and Gigabyte to ensure compatibility, reliability, and stability when paired with upcoming Intel motherboard platforms.

Through MSI and Gigabyte’s partnership with Adata, the memory maker has been developing its DDR5 modules to be capable of overclocking to “meet gamers’ discerning standards”. Adata DDR5 modules will be released alongside MSI and Gigabyte DDR5-compliant motherboards, aiming to deliver a new level of performance to customers.

Nick Dai, director of product marketing at Adata, stated that as the company worked on the development of DDR5 memory alongside both MSI and Gigabyte, it was made possible to “bring to the market the best that technology has to offer”.

With the expansion of 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6, processors featuring more cores, memory makers have to adapt to the new reality and offer faster memory with enhanced capacities and bandwidth per CPU core. With that in mind, Adata will be producing DDR5 memory modules capable of reaching speeds of up to 8400MHz at 1.1V, with a maximum capacity of 64GB per module. Additionally, these modules will feature ECC (error-correcting-code), increasing their reliability and accuracy during operation.

Asus increases the MSRP of multiple graphics cards and motherboards

The MSRP of Asus graphics cards and motherboards have increased due to the increasing costs of production and shipping. Not all graphics cards and motherboards have been a target of this increase, but as we move into the first quarter of the year, more products could see similar price bumps.

The news came from Asus’s technical product marketing manager Juan Jose Guerrero III (via VideoCardz). Juan said that despite the company working closely with “supply and logistic partners to minimise price increases”, the operations, components, and logistic costs have increased alongside import tariffs.

The price increase comes into effect immediately, as we see by Newegg’s listing of the Asus Radeon RX 6800 XT ROG Strix LC. Before this, the graphics card was priced at $899.99, but it has since increased to $1079.99.

As of now, no other AIB partners have announced an increase in the price of their products. Logistics and operations costs may be unique to each manufacturer, but some manufacturers use the same components as others, therefore, an increase of the components price would affect other companies too. Import tariffs affect all manufacturers too, but only time will tell if other manufacturers will follow the same path.

The rumour coming from Cowcotland gives us a more precise estimated release date for the Navi 22-based GPUs. However, it also contradicts another rumour, claiming that AMD was moving the release date of the Radeon RX 6700 series to January, matching the expected released date of Nvidia’s RTX 3060 graphics cards. This would be a smart move by AMD, given that the Radeon RX 6700 series cards’ performance is supposed to stand somewhere between Nvidia’s unreleased RTX 3060 and the RTX 3070.

Cowcotland also shared the expected specifications of both Navi 22-based SKUs, which are allegedly coming with Ray Tracing support and 12GB GDDR6 memory across 192-bit memory bus. The Radeon RX 6700XT should be powered by the Navi 22 XT GPU (7nm process node), featuring 40 CUs and 2560 stream processors. The Radeon RX 6700 is reportedly coming with the 7nm Navi 22 XL GPU, expected to feature less CUs (32?), therefore reducing its performance and power consumption.

At CES 2021, AMD will hold a virtual keynote on January 12th. With some luck, we may confirm some of these rumours and learn a bit more about these graphics cards.
