AMD uses the new Radeon graphics cards RX 6800, RX 6800 XT and RX 6900 XT Nvidia directly. The first GPUs will come in November. TechStage collects information, rumors, performance measurement and prices.

With the new graphics cards of the RTX – 3000 – Nvidia has series in September 2020 unexpectedly brought a very good performance to the market at comparatively humane prices (for Nvidia). AMD won’t let that sit on itself and has now introduced the new Radeon graphics cards, code-named Big Navi. Initially there will be three models: RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT should come on the market in November, the new high-end model RX 6900 XT is coming in December. That in turn could put Nvidia under pressure. The customers are happy.

The article appears as part of our themed world about graphics cards. There we have an info article about the RTX 3080 & Co or a comparison to graphics cards published. Interested readers can also find all of our individual tests there.

As always, we update the article when new information about the cards appears.

Technical information The new series of the RX – 6000 – Graphics cards use the AMD-RDNA-2 architecture. AMD calls it the “gaming DNA” itself, so the target group is pretty clear: These are GPUs for gaming. No wonder, after all, they are also found in the Xbox Series X / S and Playstation 5. There are still no specific benchmarks, as soon as we have the cards, we test them in our comparison graphics cards.

It is interesting that all cards already use PCI-Express 4.0. The standard is slowly migrating into the mainboards and has significantly more throughput than the previous PCIe 3. Another interesting feature are the so-called ray accelerators. These special computing cores take care of the hardware-based calculation of ray tracing. This means that all AMD graphics cards can finally calculate lighting, reflections and other lighting effects in real time.

The technical data is shown in our table in comparison

Prices & publication dates First of all the most important questions: What do the RX cost 5600 – cards and when are they on sale?

Radeon RX 6800 : Available from 18. 11. 2020, price 579 dollar (probably 499 – 550 Euro) Radeon RX 6800 XT : Available from 18. 11 . 2020. Price 649 Dollars (probably 550 – 650 Euro) Radeon RX 6900 XT : Available from 08. 12. 2020: Price 999 Dollars (probably 999 Euro). Radeon RX 6800 The new entry-level card is the Radeon RX 6800. Whereby, beginner is relative here. If you look at the naming of the current RX – 5000 – series, AMD has definitely left room for more, an RX 5600 or something similar should also come onto the market. For 579 Dollars (probably 85 to 550 Euro) RRP you get a strong card. It relies on 60 arithmetic units and the same number of ray accelerators. When playing games, the frequency will likely be 1815 MHz, in the short-term boost are up to 2105 MHz possible. Exciting: AMD gives all cards 16 GByte graphics RAM.

The structure of the Radeon RX 6800. (Source: AMD) The RX 6800 should appeal mainly to players who want to play with Full HD, high frame rates and high graphics settings. This would make the RX 6800 roughly a competition to the RTX 3070 or not yet confirmed RTX 3060, it is somehow in between. We would wait here for the first benchmarks, which should be around the 18. November show up for the market launch of the cards.

AMD recommends that you have at least one power supply with 650 Watts in the system.

Radeon RX 6800 XT The XT series indicates the better ones Variants of the respective RX – 6000 graphics cards. Accordingly, the specs of the RX 6800 XT are just above the RX 6800. Specifically, this means 72 Arithmetic units and the same number of ray accelerators for ray tracing calculation. The clock rate is higher, when playing the card should be marked with 2015 MHz clock, in the boost there are up to 2250 Mhz possible.

The RX 6800 XT should be between the RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 be located. It could be interesting for everyone who works with 1440 p want to play or who simply want to get more frames in Full HD. It will be exciting to see how the surcharge for the RX 6800

AMD recommends a power supply unit with at least 750 Watt.

The structure of the Radeon RX 6800 XT (source: AMD) The Igors Lab website has already seen the first leaks on benchmarks of the RX 6800 XT leaked. In the Timespy Extreme benchmark, the card thus achieves 7977 points, one RTX 3080 creates there in comparison 6900 Points (significantly better values than in our benchmark). The new AMD card would be clearly better than its predecessor or as an RTX 2080 Ti, at a comparatively low RRP. It is interesting that the RX 6800 XT in ray tracing Benchmark clearly behind the RTX 3080 lies, here it creates the level of the RTX 2080 Ti. But that can also be due to drivers that have not been adapted, which should give a significant boost here. Here, too, the first tests will probably start on 18. 11. Pop up.

Radeon RX 6900 XT The new high-end AMD’s model is the Radeon 6900 XT. She brings 80 Compute Units and 80 Ray Accelerators with. The clock is like the RX 6800 XT, 2015 MHz in gaming mode and up to 2250 MHz in boost. It should be between the RTX 3070 and the RTX 3090.

The graphics card should be suitable for everyone who wants to play smoothly with high details in 4K. However, you also need a decent power supply, according to AMD it should 850 MHz.

We are curious to see how the cards fare in the benchmarks of our colleagues and our own test system.

Conclusion AMD is back! Anyone who was afraid that AMD would not be able to counter Nvidia this year can calm down. The newly introduced graphics cards look very good on paper and in the first benchmarks. Even if they are not nearly as cheap as their predecessors, AMD fans should at least get a decent speed boost. The next big thing is ray tracing. AMD Nvidia is finally competing in this area too. So it fits well that the function is appearing in more and more games, whether in Fortnite (guide) or the (hopefully) coming cyberpunk 2077.

As always, we will update this article when the products are on sale.

We have put together more on the subject of graphics cards in the graphics cards theme and our gaming theme. In addition to individual tests, we collect the results in our large comparison test graphics cards.

AI upscaling: AMD is working with Microsoft on an alternative to Nvidia's DLSS

What Nvidia has been working on for years and what is now working satisfactorily, should also be able to use Radeon graphics cards in the future: AI upscaling, which makes the game appear more detailed and sharper than the native render resolution would allow. This saves computing power and increases the frame rate.

AMD is developing its “Super Resolution” process together with Microsoft on the basis of the DirectX API DirectML ( Machine learning). It should ensure stable frame rates, especially when using performance-hungry ray tracing graphics effects. For the presentation of the Radeon RX graphics card series 2019, however, the function is not yet available. Open source and cross-platform Compared to media like Anandtech AMD explained that Super Resolution as part of the GPUOpen project should be open source and work across platforms. In the future, the chip manufacturer intends to offer developer tools for game studios within its own FidelityFX repertoire.

DirectML uses neural networks, for example, to enhance image quality. This works either via compute shaders or via special hardware cores. Microsoft has been experimenting with AI upscaling, also with the help of Nvidia, for at least a year and a half – in a GDC presentation from March 2019 one employee already called the function Super Resolution.

Upscaling with neural network Nvidia uses the technology a self-trained neural network that is fed with K-pictures of all kinds and based on the results learns to upscale lower-resolution moving pictures . Since Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 2.0, this has worked quite well. Game developers, however, have to incorporate the feature into their titles themselves.

In a blog post, Microsoft explains that the combined processors in the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S already have hardware cores to accelerate DirectML algorithms and thus go beyond the capabilities of AMD’s “Big Navi” GPUs. Sony is apparently cooking its own soup, as the patents submitted for its own AI upscaling reveal.

AMD just announced its new RX 6000 graphics cards, just after it revealed the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs only three weeks ago. It is safe to say that we’re very excited about them. Of course, many of you are planning builds with these parts, and if you’re in the extreme high-end segment, possibly tempted to look at custom watercooling. In a tweet from EK Water Blocks it appears that AMD and EKWB are collaborating to bring you some special edition parts, designed, themed, and built specifically for these new AMD chips.
