With the new graphics cards of the RTX – 3000 – Nvidia has series in September 2020 unexpectedly brought a very good performance to the market at comparatively humane prices (for Nvidia). AMD won’t let that sit on itself and has now introduced the new Radeon graphics cards, code-named Big Navi. Initially there will be three models: RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT should come on the market in November, the new high-end model RX 6900 XT is coming in December. Technical information The new series of the RX – 6000 – Graphics cards use the AMD-RDNA-2 architecture. Another interesting feature are the so-called ray accelerators. These special computing cores take care of the hardware-based calculation of ray tracing. This means that all AMD graphics cards can finally calculate lighting, reflections and other lighting effects in real time.

The newly introduced graphics cards look very good on paper and in the first benchmarks. Even if they are not nearly as cheap as their predecessors, AMD fans should at least get a decent speed boost. The next big thing is ray tracing. AMD Nvidia is finally competing in this area too. So it fits well that the function is appearing in more and more games, whether in Fortnite (guide) or the (hopefully) coming cyberpunk 2077.

AI upscaling: AMD is working with Microsoft on an alternative to Nvidia's DLSS

What Nvidia has been working on for years and what is now working satisfactorily, should also be able to use Radeon graphics cards in the future: AI upscaling, which makes the game appear more detailed and sharper than the native render resolution would allow. AMD just announced its new RX 6000 graphics cards, just after it revealed the new Ryzen 5000 CPUs only three weeks ago. It is safe to say that we’re very excited about them. Of course, many of you are planning builds with these parts, and if you’re in the extreme high-end segment, possibly tempted to look at custom watercooling. In a tweet from EK Water Blocks it appears that AMD and EKWB are collaborating to bring you some special edition parts, designed, themed, and built specifically for these new AMD chips.

Smart Access Memory was created to remove this limitation, improving performance thanks to a faster data transfer between CPU and GPU and reducing consumption due to the lower bounce of information between the various components.

The technology will be activated by BIOS and to extract the maximum return the developers will have to program their titles taking into account Smart Access Memory . It is unclear at the moment whether any kind of improvement is achieved with non-optimized games.

AMD is currently – waiting for Intel to bring dedicated video cards to the market – the only company to have high-performance CPUs and Gaming GPU. With Smart Access Memory the company takes a further step in that vision that started many, many years ago, when it decided to acquire ATi Technologies to build CPU with integrated GPU. It is clear that that acquisition – which financially was a bloodbath – turned out to be almost 15 years more apt than ever and today AMD is reaping the rewards, with the presence of its own chips in the consoles and the synergies between multiple components that could give it a competitive advantage over the competition in the PC sector.

Based on information from AMD, Radeon RX graphics card 6800 will be more efficient than GeForce RTX 2080 Ti in 4K resolution and more often will be able to get smooth 60 frames per second under these conditions. We still have to wait for independent tests, but it looks like there is really an exciting rivalry between AMD and NVIDIA, which we have not seen in the high-end graphics card market in years.

Nor has it been mentioned whether these cards will have Artificial Intelligence capabilities by their own hardware, such as the Tensor Cores that NVIDIA uses to apply in technologies such as DLSS 2.0.

AMD Ryzen Series 5000 hasn’t even been released yet, and AMD has held a new conference, this time related to the new graphics cards, the AMD Radeon RX series 6000, or Big Navi, as caressed by both the public and AMD CEO Lisa Su. For those who did not have time, the conference can be watched here, and for those who prefer to read an article, instead of watching a movie, we will try in this article to make a summary of what we saw today.

In just 24 minutes, AMD has announced three new graphics cards, a number of important technologies, as well as the target they set for themselves. And this target, my dears, is not RTX 3080, as most users thought, but even RTX 3090, the top of Nvidia range, the most monstrous video card launched so far on the market.

Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? Well, first we have to test the new boards and test them in our methodology and until the reviews are published (18 November, respectively 8 December), some time will pass, and we will have to analyze new processors and new video cards from Nvidia.

A few weeks ago, AMD revealed the details of the Ryzen series processors 5000, based on the Zen 3 architecture. Even during the first show, we were offered a short teaser of the capabilities of the top Radeon graphics card based on the NAVI core 21 and using the RDNA 2 architecture. In recent weeks there have been various reports regarding the possible specifications and performance of Radeon graphics cards RX 6000 in Radeon RX characters 6800 , Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6900 XT. Finally, the day of the public presentation of the new RDNA 2 architecture, which was to completely break with the old GCN, was finally here. We were supposed to get a big leap in efficiency with a noticeably higher energy efficiency. How are the new cards from AMD actually looking and will they compete with the NVIDIA Ampere chips?

During the official conference, AMD revealed the details of Radeon RX graphics cards 6800, Radeon RX 6800 XT and Radeon RX 6900 XT, based on the NAVI core 21 and RDNA Architecture 2.

The new graphics cards will be based on a significantly redesigned RDNA 2 architecture. One of the most important novelties is the Infinity Cache, whose task is to noticeably increase bandwidth compared to typical, 384 – bit memory bus. Another feature is AMD Smart Access Memory which, in conjunction with Rade Mode (overclocking with one button in a dedicated application) and AMD Ryzen series processor 5000 gives you an additional performance boost. The first graphics card presented is the Radeon RX 6800 XT, whose performance in 4K and Quad HD is to be comparable or higher compared to GeForce RTX 3080

Titles such as Borderlands 3, Forza Horizon 4, The Division 2, Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, DOOM Eternal and Shadow of the Tomb Raider were selected for comparison. Radeon RX card 6800 XT comes with 72 Compute Units of the next generation, 128 MB Infinity Cache and 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The total TBP of the entire card is 300 W, so about 20 Less compared to GeForce RTX 3080. Of course, the card uses the 7nm TSMC process, which, thanks to further improvements, managed to obtain 30% faster core clock compared to the previous generation Radeon RX 3090. AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT will be available from 18 November Included 649 dollars .

The second presented card is Radeon RX 6800 with 60 CU blocks. The new GPU will also come with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM and 128 MB of Infinity Cache. Total Radeon RX TGP 6000 equals 250 W. During the presentation, AMD compared the card to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, that is de facto RTX 2250. The card is supposed to offer higher performance in the same games as presented above. Radeon RX 6800 will available from 18 November for a price of 579 dollars . At the very end, there is an absolute top in the form of the Radeon RX 6800 XT, based on full NAVI core 21 with 80 Compute Units.

AMD compares top RDNA 2 card to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090. The GPU has also been equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM on the bus 256 – bitwise in combination with 128 MB Infinity Cache, which is supposed to have a noticeable impact on bandwidth also at higher resolutions. Interestingly, the total TBP (Total Board Power) is 300 W, the same as in the Radeon RX 6800 XT. The card also has a high core clock soaring to 2015 MHz in Game mode and 2250 MHz in Turbo mode. According to AMD, in games such as Battlefield V, Borderlands 3, Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War 5, the Radeon RX card 6900 XT will perform better than GeForce RTX 3090. It is important, however, that the discussed results are related to the active techniques of Rage Mode and Smart Access Memory. Radeon RX Premiere 6900 XT will be held on December 8 for the price 999 dollars. Interestingly, during the presentation, AMD did not really focus on the topic of Ray Tracing. We know RDNA 2 architecture offers hardware support, but no details have been shared about the DXR acceleration units.
