Windows’ own command line program DISM can add a lot to Windows installations and edit Windows images. An instruction.

Windows 09: How to edit Windows images with DISM First steps Convert To edit Discover further on your own Article in c’t 24 / 2020 read The abbreviation DISM stands t for “Deployment Image Servicing and Management”, Microsoft translates this as “Deployment Image Management Tool”. Since both names sound like gibberish at first and are much too long for everyday use, the abbreviation DISM is commonly used. The program lacks a graphical user interface, so it is a pure command line tool. The name of the executable is dism.exe. You can either call it up in a command prompt or in a PowerShell, but in both cases it must run with administrator rights.

When you first approach DISM, the term “image” in the name often causes confusion, so a brief explanation first: An image is a collection of folders and sub-folders as well as each files in it. It also contains metadata such as attributes and objects of the NTFS file system (access rights, reparse points such as junctions and hard links …). Therefore, an image can contain anything that is on drive C: on a Windows PC, and when it does, it is commonly referred to as a Windows image. However, an image can contain any data, such as the contents of D: Pictures Vacation. An image is an image of a logical drive (volume) or a folder on it, but cannot contain any data that originally extends over several logical drives.

Images can be stored in an archive – Package the file in the “Windows Image” file format. This usually has the extension .wim, hence the name WIM file. There are also WIM files with the extension .esd. It contains highly compressed images for distribution by download (esd stands for Electronic Software Distribution). If images are split into several WIM files, these have the extension .swm (Splitted WIM).

samsung-smartphone-with-surround-display-and-sliding-camera

Samsung smartphone with surround display and sliding camera

Samsung has a striking smartphone in development with a transparent housing, which consists of 100% screen surface and has a sliding camera system.

Samsung has now released several smartphones with a flexible display, including the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable smartphones. However, a flexible screen is not only applicable to foldable devices. For example, a bendable screen can also serve to create a wrap-around display smartphone, such as the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha with Surround Display introduced last year.

Samsung also seems to be investigating the possibilities of developing a smartphone that consists completely of screen surface. Although the device that Samsung has patented is significantly more advanced than Xiaomi’s Mix Mix Alpha.

This time, there is no frame visible at all – not even at the top and bottom and not even around the camera system. The Samsung smartphone that LetsGoDigital reports on today consists of 100% screen surface. It is not only the design where this phone is progressive, Samsung also seems to have some very special functions in development.

Samsung Galaxy phone with surround display

The brand new patent entitled ‘Electronic device’ was applied for by Samsung Electronics at the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) in July this year and was published on October 29, 2020 and included in the database of the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), for worldwide protection of the patented technology.

The 70-page documentation describes in detail how Samsung wants to realize this special smartphone design. The mobile phone is provided with several screens to enclose the entire device with a display surface.

A curved display is used for the front. A flat screen is applied to the back and several semi-rounded displays are used for the edges. Different types of screens can be used, including an AMOLED or LCD display. In practice, you will not realize that it concerns multiple displays, the content can – depending on the app – simply flow from one screen to the other.

For the development, especially in the rounded corners, it is easier to process multiple screens than one large display. Nevertheless, as an alternative, the documentation also mentions the use of one large wrap-around screen, which is folded around the entire device. This would make it easier to adjust the display resolution and also saves on power consumption.

To give some life to the patent sketches, in-house 3D designer Giuseppe Spinelli (aka Snoreyn) made a series of product renders, based on the images and documentation as patented by Samsung Electronics. These 3D color renders are for illustrative purposes only, to better visualize the proprietary technology.

Samsung smartphone with transparent housing

The housing is made of a transparent material that can transmit light, such as transparent acrylic or transparent polymer material. By making the housing transparent, and having it consist of two parts, it can be placed over the screen – which of course makes a big difference with all models available today.

All necessary components are placed inside, even under the surround display, for this purpose support columns are used. Thus, the components are not visible despite the housing being transparent.

The transparent housing has several advantages, as this device can adapt to the environment – like a kind of chameleon! For example, the device as a whole can change depending on external factors, such as the weather.

For example, the smartphone can receive weather information and display it on the entire screen. Is it raining or snowing? Then the drops literally fall off your screen. Predefined graphic elements are used for this. The same also applies to your state of mind. The device can track your activities and thus provide comprehensive information about your health and / or training performance.

The documentation also mentions the possibility of scanning the environment using the camera. The colors from the environment are detected, after which the smartphone will show an image similar to the environment in which it is located. As an example, there is talk of pebbles that are located within the camera range of the smartphone.

The color information of these stones is captured by the camera, then the device searches for matching images and displays them on all display panels. This way your smartphone can completely disappear in its environment.

Are you at a metro station? Then the camera can not only detect color information from the metro station, sound can also be detected through the microphone. The content displayed on the smartphone screen will then correspond even better to the environment in which the user finds himself.

Thanks to AI (Artificial Intelligence), this device can also recognize user patterns and adjust the information displayed accordingly. Do you always drive to work around the same time in the morning and always check the weather forecast in advance? After doing this a number of times, your phone will recognize the patterns and then automatically display the weather report of the particular location you are in every day at time X. This works the same for displaying traffic information etc.

Samsung smartphone with sliding camera system

Samsung has even more details in store for this surround display smartphone with transparent housing. Samsung also wants to provide this device with a sliding mechanism to hide the cameras. By sliding the rear part of the housing down, relative to the front part, the camera system with flash appears.

The camera is mounted on the front housing and is aimed at the back, in order to be able to take regular photo and video recordings. Since the device also has a screen at the rear, you can easily turn the smartphone around to be able to take selfies or make video calls with the same camera system.

By using a sliding mechanism, no camera is visible when you use the device folded – like a normal smartphone. This is a clear difference from the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha’s vertical camera strip. As this Samsung smartphone consists entirely of screen, the device will have a very striking and futuristic appearance, especially in combination with the transparent housing.

Although a sliding camera offers sufficient photo and video possibilities, the documentation also mentions a second camera module that is placed under the screen. This camera is directed towards the front, so that it can be used to detect the user, in order to determine which displays should be switched on based on use.

For example, is the phone lying flat on the table, or is it held in the hand? Depending on the use, the device determines which display and / or displays should be activated. At the edges, the content will continue from the main screen – regardless of whether you are using the front or back screen.

The display that is not in use can show a preset graphic object, such as a photo of your beloved dog. Thumbnails can also be displayed on the side surfaces. As an example, the documentation mentions the camera application, where thumbnail images of your most recently captured photos are displayed along the edges of the screen.

By simply clicking or dragging such a thumbnail image you can view it enlarged. If desired, the user can also easily display that particular thumbnail image on the rear screen.

Another example mentioned in the patent documentation; a video is shown on the front, by turning the device over you will see the corresponding information of that video – think of the file name, recording date, video resolution and file size. Are you with several people and do you want to enjoy a movie together? Then you can also decide to show the video on all displays at the same time. The video can also be displayed in split-screen mode.

The necessary sensors will be placed under the display, including a fingerprint sensor and possibly also the speaker. Remarkably, no buttons or connectors are visible on the patent illustrations. The documentation states that this unit can be turned on and off via the screen – instead of a physical power button. For this, a piezoelectric film sensor is used, which generates a voltage (electrical charge) as soon as a touch is detected on the screen, after which the display will be switched on.

Replacement for the SIM compartment can be found in the eSIM (built-in electronic SIM) – just like the Motorola RAZR 2019 can also be used exclusively with eSIM. High-end devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Apple iPhone 12 offer the possibility to use an eSIM thanks to dual SIM functionality, but can also be used in combination with a physical nano-SIM if desired.

Although no USB-C connection is visible on the patent images, the documentation does mention the possibility of wireless and wired charging. It would not be the very first smartphone without buttons and connections though, the special Meizu Zero was introduced at the beginning of last year – where the model name refers to the fact that this phone has “zero” holes and notches.

Uniquely designed Samsung smartphones

LetsGoDigital already reported on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone with a 3D curved display last year. Samsung also patented the design of a dual display smartphone and even a Samsung smartphone with a transparent display is not entirely new.

Such Samsung smartphones are not yet available, but that does not mean that Samsung is unable to produce such phones. The market must also be ripe for it, in addition such a smartphone should deliver sufficient extra added value, compared to the higher price.

For example, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha was introduced in September 2019, this particularly futuristic smartphone with wrap-around display and 108MP camera carried a suggested retail price of € 2,500. The device was to be produced in a limited edition, but was ultimately never brought to the market. The exorbitant sales price will undoubtedly be related to this. However, that does not alter the fact that the technology is already there.

Incidentally, it is too easy to think that Samsung has copied the ideas for this surround display smartphone from Xiaomi. Because the Koreans already registered a patent in their homeland Korea in 2016, on which this new patent is further elaborated. Partly for this reason, it is certainly not unlikely that such Samsung prototypes already exist – no matter how futuristic they look like.

However, the question remains whether such a smartphone can deliver sufficient added value and when the price / quality ratio will be sufficient to actually put such a device on the market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Series

If Samsung wants to release such a mobile phone, it is certainly not inconceivable that it will be placed within the relatively new Galaxy Z series. This also includes the foldable phones, such as the Z Flip and Z Fold 2.

Most likely, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will be the next foldable device from Samsung, but this folding phone is not expected until the summer of 2021. First up is the release of the Galaxy S21 series, these high-end smartphones will probably already be announced in January.

Last year, the Z Flip was introduced simultaneously with the S-series devices, however Samsung seems to be making a small change in the coming year. The Samsung S21 is expected a month earlier than usual, while the Z Flip 2 will be released a few months later.

microsoft-surface-laptop-go-–-a-niche-in-the-market

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go – A niche in the market

In summary The Laptop Go is the cheaper version of the Surface Laptop 3 and is a bit slower than its big brother. The screen has a low resolution, which is not disturbing when browsing the web, but it is when running image editing software or spreadsheets. The build quality is very good and except for the cheapest model, the laptops have a fingerprint scanner. The weight is low and the laptop is nice and compact. Together with the touchscreen and the 3: 2 aspect ratio, this makes a unique laptop. As far as connections are concerned, the Laptop Go is disappointing and a card reader is missing. The additional cost for the version with more storage is high and the battery life of 8.5 hours while browsing is decent, but under load it drops rapidly.

When Microsoft introduced its first Surface tablets, it sold the Surface Pro for 900 euro, but also a cheaper variant, the Surface RT, for less than 500 euro. This cheaper option is intended to appeal to users with less money to spend and to entice educational institutions not to opt for laptops with Chrome OS, but for Windows. The latest example in that ‘cheaper’ series is the Surface Laptop Go, a cheaper version of the Surface Laptop. From the outside you can immediately see that it is smaller than the Surface Laptop 3, but there are many more differences. In this review we look at them and see whether the small Laptop Go is recommended.

Anyone who knows Microsoft’s products will immediately notice that the Surface Laptop Go is is a cheaper product than the regular Surface Laptop, while you still see the Microsoft signature in this product. To start with the first: the Surface Laptop Go is quite small. The screen has a diagonal of 12, 4 “, but a 3: 2 ratio, making the whole laptop less than 28 centimeter wide, that is narrower than for example this one 11, 6 “- Chromebook. It is also clearly a Surface product, because you see the same design language as with the Surface Laptop and the Surface tablets. The housing is largely made of gray metal and has no superfluous buttons or stickers. The shape is similar to that of the Surface Laptop, but the bottom, or D cover, is made of plastic, which is the first time with a Surface product. The light gray plastic looks a bit cheaper than the full metal housing of a Surface Laptop, but it feels very sturdy. You can also feel this in the construction of the screen, for example, which does not bend or twist under pressure and whose hinge offers sufficient resistance. That’s nice, because the Suface Laptop Go is equipped with a touchscreen.

For a laptop of 630 euros, because that is how much the cheapest Laptop Go costs, the build quality is above average. With many laptops in this price category, we come across housings that feel cheaper and, above all, less sturdy. Another point where you can see that Microsoft has paid a lot of attention to the design is the placement of the speakers. Front-facing speakers generally give a clearer sound, but the housing offers little room for that. That is why they are pointed upwards under the keyboard, which leads to good intelligibility when making calls.

The screen edges are nice and narrow, but there is still a camera in the top edge. It just doesn’t have facial recognition, like all other Surface devices. A fingerprint scanner is also not available if you choose the version of 630, which is a downside. The more expensive versions do have that, but then you pay at least 800 euros.

In addition, Microsoft is not generous with connections. This comes as no surprise; this was not the case on the Surface Laptop either, but in practice it is inconvenient. The right side only houses Microsoft’s own Surface connector, which you can use to charge the Laptop Go or hang it from a Microsoft accessory, such as a Surface Dock. On the left are a regular USB-A connection, headphone connection and USB-C. You can use the USB-C connection to charge the laptop, and you can also connect external screens by means of a dock. As mentioned, the number of connections is not very practical. We miss a card reader and if you plug a wide card reader on USB into the USB-A port, for example, you can no longer use the USB-C connection, because it is right next to it. An extra gate on the right side would not have been an unnecessary luxury.

Keyboard and touchpad The keyboard of the Surface Laptop Go is not wrong for a laptop keyboard. The touch is clear, but every key press is neatly muffled, making the laptop feel solid. With cheaper laptops, it is sometimes the case that an attack ensures that the housing bounces, which therefore feels cheap. The key travel is 1.3mm according to Microsoft and we took our keyboard test equipment to check that.

Because we were only able to measure the maximum travel with the Surface Laptop 3, the value for the actuation point is missing. As a result, the graph above looks crazy. For reference, the laptops with the most and least travel that we have measured so far, the MacBook Pro and the ThinkPad E 490, are also included. The 1.3 millimeter key travel specified by Microsoft is accurate to the hundredth of a millimeter and quite similar to that of other compact laptops, such as the Acer Swift 5 and the ASUS Zenbook 13.

It seems that the surface of the touchpad is made of plastic and although we prefer to see a glass surface, your finger slips there easily over it and all multi-touch gestures are picked up without any problems. The mouse button underneath the touchpad produces a clear, muted click when pressed.

Best headphones under $100/£100: Great audio at a good price

(Pocket-lint) – There’s nothing like a bargain to get the blood pumping. But while there are many cheap headphones, many of them are poor value. And, at the other end of the scale, decent models can jump up quite a bit in price.

It’s increasingly common for even relatively new brands to charge hundreds for their headphones.

Beats Flex

squirrel_widget_3491164

Beats Flex are a smart update to the proven formula from the Beats X, and thrive by making wireless audio super-affordable and pairing it with great battery life.

They deliver on those counts, even if the AirPods Pro now make them look distinctly… wired. Nonetheless, the Beats Flex are a slick, great-sounding package, with a battery life that matches the Jaybird X3s, and an arguably even more subtle design. At this price, they’re frankly unbeatable.

Jaybird X3

squirrel_widget_140522

The Jaybird X3 tops out our list, as the perfect example of where corners don’t need cutting just because the cost of a pair or earbuds are going down. They’re a great set of buds, perfect for exercising in, but sleek enough to work in most settings, and while the X4 is now out, we still prefer the smaller design of this older model.

The sound they give is great, but the lightweight design is the real star, making them comfortable to wear for long periods. Battery life of 8 hours per charge is also about as good as you could hope for at their price. The X3x have been waiting for something to topple them for some time — for now, they’re still out ahead.

Urbanista Seattle Wireless

In-ear wireless buds are far from the only options on the table, though, as evidenced by the superbly-priced Urbanista Seattle headphones. They’re a really nicely-designed pair of cans, with almost no branding to speak of, and are simply priced superbly.

The sound profile is also much better than the pricing suggests, especially as far as genuinely impressive bass is concerned. With a massive 12 hours of battery life from each charge, you’ll also be able to use them all day without worrying. Controls built onto the right-hand earcup are a clever touch, rounding out a great package.

SoundMAGIC E11

Perhaps, though, you actually couldn’t give a monkey’s about going wireless. If you’re happy to abandon Bluetooth connectivity, you can take a drastic leap in terms of low prices. The SoundMAGIC E11s show this off perfectly. They’re positively bargain-basement in price, but importantly get the job done.

You’ll get impressive sound for your money, and can cut the price even further if an inline mic isn’t needed. They might not draw the eye too much, but the E11s will have you feeling smart for saving your cash.

AKG Y500

squirrel_widget_161101

Being thrifty doesn’t mean that you’re completely limited to staid, matte-black headphones, though. AKG’s Y500 has some of the boldest colour options available on the market. Opt for the blue or pink version of the headphones and you’re sure to draw the eye as you make your way around.

Of course, the Y500s also bring great sound, with good wireless performance and battery life. With high-quality metal and leather components, you really wouldn’t know they’re a budget set of cans. Of course, the looks won’t be for everyone, but if they’re up your street, the Y500 is a brilliant proposition.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40X

squirrel_widget_176868

Audio-Technica is a specialist in high-quality audio components in extremely reasonably-priced packages, and the ATH-M40X show that in spades. These are big, over-ear headphones (showing that we’re catering to all tastes), with big cushions to ensure comfort while you wear them.

They’re stripped down to the audio essentials, lacking a mic or Bluetooth, and that’s worked wonders — they sound superb, with mids and highs that are crisp and easily distinguished, and impressively punchy bass into the package. Near-studio quality sound doesn’t come in packages this reasonable very often, so if you’re happy to use these for music alone, you’ll have a great time.

comment:-the-new-mac-–-between-the-old-and-the-future-of-the-computer

Comment: The new Mac – between the old and the future of the computer

No 50 minutes, then the keynote was over: Apple came in his Event “One more thing” really quick to the point. It was clear from the start that it would be about ARM Macs. After all, Apple had already announced in the summer that the first machines with “Apple Silicon” – as the company calls its own SoCs with a proud chest – will be available before the end of the year. The fact that three machines arrived, including a desktop, was a pleasant surprise.

Fanless into happiness That can’t be said about their design. Apple simply planted its ARM heart in the well-known Intel case. MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with 13 and Mac mini with the brand new M1 chip see their x 86 – confusingly similar to brothers. Well, the MacBook Air for ARM no longer has a fan and a slightly remodeled keyboard. But otherwise everything stays as (recognizable) old.

That was to be expected, even with the switch from the PowerPC architecture to Intel, Apple did not proceed any differently. That is a bit disappointing, as we expect a change like the one with the ARM switch, actually also completely new designs. But we will have to wait for at least until 2021. In general, Apple emphasizes that the transition to Apple Silicon will take several years.

Many small cores in the M1 The machines themselves are particularly attractive because of the M1 processor; Apple has not revealed whether this is based on processor A 14 from the iPhone and iPad Air 4. The comparison values that Apple gave in terms of performance to Intel Macs, but also to PCs with similar prices, sound impressive. Of course, this first requires evidence by means of a benchmark, which the group did not provide as usual. But speed information can often be trusted with ARM devices from Apple. The group is now optimizing its operating system perfectly to its own silicon, which should be no different with macOS 11 aka Big Sur. And Apple’s ARM chips have plenty of raw power.

Eight cores are now playing in the Mac. Four of them are high-performance cores, four are high-efficiency cores, i.e. intended for continuous load. Even the high-efficiency cores are supposedly faster than some Intel Macs in normal operation. This also has to be proven first. But all of this is certainly promising. Apple now doesn’t need Intel, AMD or Nvidia for GPUs. The technology comes with the SoC. Up to 8 graphics cores are integrated, with the cheapest MacBook Air Apple turns one off. The neural machine learning engine is the icing on the cake, as is the new signal processor, which supposedly can get the most out of the (unfortunately still lousy) MacBook webcams.

The Mac remains the Mac That leaves the software side. Here Apple drove up heavy developer guns, from Adobe to popular independent companies such as Panic to gaming developers. Everyone was allowed to express their enthusiasm into the camera – and that is certainly real with native code. However, even if Apple makes it quite easy for developers with various tools, adapting existing apps is associated with work. And the software companies have to do that first. Not everyone has the time and money to do it. The new emulation layer Rosetta 2 for Intel code remains as a transition bridge. Hopefully this runs silently in the background for most apps. It is said to be damn fast and therefore hardly attracts users’ attention. Practice will also show that.

In any case, a start has been made. All in all, it can be said that Apple is working intensively on the future of the computer itself with the ARM Macs. Tablets, smartphones and computers are not growing together again; instead, each type has its own specific advantages. You can see that from the fact that Apple neither came up with the idea of giving the new M1 computers cellular modules, nor giving them a touchscreen. And to be honest, that’s right. The Mac remains the Mac, just accelerated and optimized. And since Apple now has its chip development completely in-house, users no longer have to wait for Intel. Thats something. (bsc)

Sony PlayStation 5 – interface, multimedia applications and UHD drive

A few days ago we published a review of the hardware part of the Sony PlayStation 5 console. We mainly praised the low temperatures under load (except for the bottom of the device noticeably warms up) and a very good work culture of the equipment. This one is incomparably better compared to PlayStation 4 and (especially) PlayStation 4 Pro. On the eve of the official premiere at, among others American and Japanese market, we discuss in detail issues related to the new console UI interface, support for multimedia applications and issues related to the built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. I was particularly interested in the quality of popular VOD applications, as well as the culture of the optical drive. It is good in this respect, but it could be even better.

In today’s material, we take a detailed look at the system interface, the most interesting functionalities, multimedia applications and the Ultra HD Blu disc player. ray.

Sony PlayStation 5 review and games Spider-Man: Miles Morales

This time, however, I will start with the Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, which is new to the PlayStation 5. Both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 had Blu-ray drives that could read discs up to 43 GB In the case of the new console, support has been extended to Ultra HD Blu-ray media: BD – 66 and BD – 100. I was curious how he would do and the drive in the PS5, the more so since consoles have not yet had a great work culture while watching movies. Fortunately, the PlayStation 5 actually has an extremely quiet drive, but only from the moment all the content is loaded. For the heaviest BDs – 66 need about 10 minutes from the moment the CD is placed in the reader for the software to run through the entire material. You have to prepare for it and be aware of it if you want to watch movies from such CDs. In the first minutes, the reader volume reaches close 43 decibels and this is the only time the console is noticeably louder. After this time, the drive becomes inaudible and the volume drops to about 31 decibels (a constantly running fan is heard).

We are already testing the Sony PlayStation console 5! Our first impressions

We can control the player using the DualSense controller, but I wouldn’t say that the pad is a perfect replacement for a traditional remote. It’s not bad, but it takes a while to get your bearings. which buttons are responsible for what. A much better solution will be to obtain a dedicated accessory in the form of a multimedia remote control, with which we will be much easier to maneuver around the options in the UHD Blu-ray player. I also confirm that PlayStation 5 supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS: X in Blu-ra movies y and Ultra HD Blu-ray. However, there is a small detail. In the default setting, spatial audio is disabled. The fastest way to change it is from the settings in the player. After entering the Audio Format section, you will notice that Linear PCM is enabled by default. To activate Dolby Atmos and / or DTS: X, change the format to Bitstream. Regarding the video aspects, unfortunately the PlayStation 5 player does not support Dolby Vision or HDR +. For 4K movies, therefore, only the base HDR remains . At the moment, there is no information about a potential software update that would add functionality. However, I evaluate the drive itself positively, mainly thanks to the great work culture after loading all the data from the disc. In this respect, it beats the Xbox One X console. Finally, we can enjoy support for 4K Blu-ray discs with a capacity of up to 100 GB, so the PS5 could become quite Nice alternative to standalone Ultra HD Blu-ray disc players.

DualSense controller – Test crashes on the example of Astro’s Playroom

The above-mentioned remote control has dedicated buttons corresponding to Disney +, Netflix, Spotify and YouTube. Currently Disney + is not still available in Poland, so the corresponding application on the console is also not available But we will find Amazon Prime Video, Twitch or Apple TV. I am very pleased with the presence of the latter application in particular. The introduction of Apple TV to the new generation consoles will make it much more common. It is worth getting to know it better, if only because of the very rich movie store. in 4K quality – often these are productions that we have never seen on physical media, especially with the Polish language version. Low prices for films are another advantage, and in addition, various types of promotions are often held in the store. Apple TV also includes Apple TV + with original series and movies. Support for 4K and HDR resolutions is available 10. Again, however, we will experience neither Dolby Vision nor Dolby Atmos. Sony obviously has a problem with Dolby technologies, because Atmos will not be found in any VOD application. It is not offered on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, and it will also not be available on Disney + when the service finally hits the Polish market. We have to be content with the usual Dolby Digital 5.1 format with bandwidth 640 KB / sec.

The very appearance of the interface with applications is very nice for Here you will find tiles with the appropriate programs, which we need to download first to be able to run them later. The applications themselves inside do not differ from what we know from, for example, Smart TVs or dedicated TV adapters. In the case of Netflix, Prime Video or YouTube, we can count on support for 4K and HDR resolutions Dolby Vision, just like Dolby Atmos, however, is nowhere to be found.

I will also pause for the console interface for a moment. At first glance, it looks like a more refined version of the UI, already known from PlayStation 4. It is aesthetically pleasing, but at times I get the impression that it is a bit too overcomplicated. In the case of PS5, we have to press the “PS” button on the DualSense controller each time and only then the same options will appear at the bottom of the screen. We can check the latest notifications, game download status, friends list, sound settings sound and microphone or quick shutdown of the console. Of course, we can get used to it quickly, but I must admit that the number of these hidden options at first seems overwhelming. A big advantage, however, is the very fast interface work. Moving between options is extremely smooth. Nothing gets stuck or muddy.

An additional advantage of the new interface is its coupling with the PlayStation Store. In its predecessor, the store was a separate part and each time entering it took a bit of time to load. The store interface itself was also not the most transparent. In the case of PlayStation 5, the store is an integral part of the system. This makes the store basically like another application. Launching is incredibly fast. and the refreshed interface is definitely eye-catching general sections, e.g. news or promotions. There is a separate category for subscriptions, where we can learn everything about the PlayStation Plus service and PlayStation Plus Collection (access to the most popular PS4 games as part of the PS Plus subscription).

In our photo gallery we present more news from the Sony PlayStation 5 console system. An option that fell to me to your liking it is a quick transfer of data from PS4 to PS5. We do not need a flash drive for this, but a network connection of both consoles on the same WiFi network is enough. After connecting PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and entering the appropriate setting, we can quickly transfer both save from PS4 games as well as all multimedia materials (screenshots, video clips). Another feature that I liked is general settings for all games. We can choose the level of difficulty, limitations in revealing spoilers from games or the overall image quality (the choice between better fluidity and greater detail of the graphics). This option is very nice especially for people who would like to set individual game elements once and have them saved for all upcoming titles. There is also support for the mouse and keyboard, although here a lot also depends on the game developers whether they want to implement the possibility of using these peripherals. The console also allows you to change the default settings for the DualSense controller. We can decide, for example, on a lower vibration intensity or the effect of adaptive triggers. The lower the degree, the less we will feel them during games. The DualSense will then lose much of its unique experience, but will also be able to run longer on battery power.

There is also one change that I did not like: the ability to copy game save files on the PS5 console. In the case of PS4, we could have them easily keep them even on a flash drive. In the new device we can only store them in the cloud, there will be no other method of access to them. By default, of course, they are saved in a given console, but we will not transfer them locally. In turn, to be able to store them in the cloud, it is necessary PlayStation Plus subscription Officially, the manufacturer retains the line of defense that it is related to increasing data security. In my opinion, however, this looks like another limitation to what we had seamless access to on PlayStation 4.

Of the other disadvantages of PlayStation 5 that we have encountered so far, there is the issue of incomplete support for HDMI 2.1 and screens with resolution 1440 p. We do not know how it will be Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode look like Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency Mode In the case of monitors, Sony is currently investigating the issue and if user interest is high enough, there is a chance that native resolution support will be positive 1440 p. It is a pity that Sony once again closes on solutions that have been available from competitors for a long time. After these few weeks of testing, PlayStation 5 appears to be a good successor to its predecessor. Keep in mind, however, that in several places the equipment appears to be artificially limited again. No support for Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos in VOD applications and games, initially blocked M.2 connector for an additional disk, no support for 1440 p or the mentioned HDMI 2.1 functions are the most serious complaints I have today to the console. Most of this will certainly be fixed in the next system updates, but some disgust at the premiere remains.

How Bunny the dog is pushing scientists’ buttons

Bunny the dog lounges with her buttons.
Image: Alexis Devine

TikTok’s most famous talking dog has inspired some serious research

Like many devoted dog owners, Alexis Devine spends hours every day sitting in her living room talking to her dog, Bunny. The peculiar thing is that Bunny “talks” back. Scroll through Devine’s TikTok page and you’ll see a stream of videos that follow the same general pattern. Bunny stands next to a collection of buttons on the floor, raises a paw, and presses down. The prerecorded buttons sound off in the order she presses them: “More, Scritches, Now.”

People are fascinated by Bunny and her ability to “talk.” She has 5 million followers on TikTok, and the likes on each video are in the hundreds of thousands. There are parody videos on TikTok and existential jokes on Twitter about Bunny’s sentience. Devine has been enjoying the parodies. “Most of the memes are really funny, I got a good laugh out of them,” she says.

Along with Bunny’s demands for scritches, Devine, an artist and self-identified nonexpert in dog science, fields hundreds of questions from humans every day. One question persists among fans and skeptics alike: is this dog really “talking”? Inspired by Bunny’s videos, researchers at the Comparative Cognition Lab at UC San Diego are trying to find out. They haven’t gotten anywhere close to an answer yet, but they’re gathering a lot of data along the way.

Bunny’s journey started when Devine saw videos from Christina Hunger, a speech-language pathologist who has been teaching her dog Stella to use a board full of buttons with words prerecorded on them. The board is an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device — an umbrella term for tools from boards with symbols on them to speech-generating devices — which is typically used by nonverbal people to communicate without speech. Inspired by Hunger, Devine diligently trained Bunny from puppyhood and started setting up her own system one button at a time. Bunny is now 15 months old, and her system has expanded into a mat with over 70 buttons.

After Devine’s videos started picking up traction in early spring, Federico Rossano, director of the Comparative Cognition Lab at UC San Diego, started discussing them with people in his department. They began planning a project to study Bunny and other dogs like her who are learning to use the buttons. They hope to determine scientifically whether non-humans can really use something like language to communicate. There are now over 700 participants, including dogs, cats, and even horses, and Rossano says the growing number is almost certainly due to Bunny’s popularity drawing people in.

Each participant receives instructions on how to set up their buttons, starting with words like “outside” and “play.” Cameras are constantly pointed at their personalized boards, and that footage is sent to the lab where researchers comb through and code what they see. “We want to make sure we’re not just getting cherry-picked clips,” says Rossano.

Rossano and his colleagues plan to use the footage to understand different aspects of animal cognition and communication — not just whether they can communicate using something like language, but also how that communication might work. One of the first things they’re looking at is how quickly the animals are learning to use the buttons. That means basic data collection, like figuring out the speed at which a dog learns to associate a button that says “outside” with going outside. Rossano’s hope is that with a large pool of diverse participants, they may be able to start drawing connections between factors like breed or age with learning speed.

They’re also looking at how much the animals seem to be exhibiting properties that are generally claimed to be uniquely human, like temporal and spatial displacement, or the ability to make observations and form narratives. When Bunny asks “Where, Dad” does that mean she has a sense of spatial displacement, where she is aware of “Dad” and acknowledging that he is not present in the room with her? When another dog presses “Water, Outside,” is that an observation about the rain, or is it a request?

One of the most interesting recent introductions to Bunny’s board, at the prompting of researchers, has been words that are related to concepts of time, including “morning,” “evening,” “yesterday,” and “tomorrow.” There’s not much known about how dogs might conceptualize time. Lisa Gunter, a research fellow at Arizona State University who has worked with dogs with separation anxiety, thinks dogs likely have a concept of duration, “but who’s to say how they would describe it.”

The next step, anticipated for winter 2021, is to send researchers to the animals’ homes to conduct more controlled experiments. Will the dogs be able to produce the same seemingly remarkable behaviors with outside researchers that they regularly display for their owners? These experiments will be critical in drawing any conclusions about exactly how much they understand.

When Bunny presses “Settle, Sound, Ouch,” she might be using a novel string of known words to tell someone to quiet down, or she might be pressing a random series of buttons while confirmation bias on our part does the rest of the work. Even Devine says that she thinks Bunny’s “speech” is primarily operant conditioning, where Bunny has made an association between pressing a button and something happening. A true understanding of language goes beyond simple associations, and involves pulling unique combinations of words together into narratives.

Bunny and her cohort are part of a long legacy of the search for human-like communication and cognition in animals. There are famous non-human primate examples like Kanzi, the bonobo who has memorized hundreds of symbols on a special keyboard. There are also dogs like Chaser, who could remember the names of over 1,000 objects. The researchers at UC San Diego are less interested in how many symbols or words Bunny can memorize, and more in how her vocabulary might lend to meaningful communication with humans.

One of the most infamous cases of animal-human communication is that of Clever Hans, the 20th century horse who could apparently provide answers to simple math questions by tapping his hoof. Upon further investigation, it turned out Hans wasn’t doing any arithmetic but was instead reading subtle cues from whoever was questioning him to know when to stop tapping.

Researchers are wary of falling into the trap of the Clever Hans effect. Rossano says the videos of Bunny are interesting, “but we need to be very careful about what we think is going on. There’s a lot of risk about making bold claims.” He wants to gather as much data as possible, and until experiments determine how much humans influence their companions’ actions, he won’t be drawing any hard conclusions about Bunny’s capacity for language.

Even if it turns out Bunny’s button-pressing isn’t exactly robust communication, Rossano thinks the research is on the right track in comparison to past experiments, where animals were taken out of their natural habitats. “Dogs are enculturated naturally, they live with humans,” Rossano says. This connection makes them particularly handy subjects in research, especially when it’s being conducted in their own homes.

Thanks to our shared history that reaches back thousands of years, dogs already have a significant understanding of human communication and expression. “That’s what makes them really different than doing primate research or doing any sort of research where the animals aren’t intimately involved with us,” says Gunter. “The amount of time the dogs have to just watch us and learn, I think it can’t be understated.”

Because dogs are learning from us all the time, and they have their own established ways of communicating, Gunter worries that excitement over projects like this might detract from the relationships we already have with dogs. “I don’t want it to take away from all the fantastic ways that we share our lives with dogs, and how they talk to us all the time about what they want and how they’re feeling.”

But Rossano thinks dogs’ built-in communication — nonverbal vocalizations, gestures, sniffs — is not exactly easy to learn for most humans, with the exception of experienced trainers. He wants to see if dogs will be able to learn and combine words in order to better communicate their wants and needs, with less guesswork on the side of their humans.

how long til bunny the dog becomes self aware and develops anxiety

Bunny (the dog from TikTok that uses a soundboard to speak) is smarter than me and I don’t trust her

— Gabe Itch (@ineedahitta) October 29, 2020

Gunter thinks people’s outsized reactions to Bunny videos may be a reflection of our nervousness when it comes to fully providing for our companions’ needs. A dog with the potential to communicate with us in a new way could push us to accept that animals “have their own thoughts, wants, needs, desires,” she says. “I think that likely means that we’re gonna come up short sometimes.”

“And even if people have an existential crisis about it,” Gunter says, “maybe that just means we look at the world from their perspective a little bit more.”

Devine considers Bunny’s perspective often, while also maintaining a healthy skepticism about Bunny’s level of understanding. “I don’t think she understands it in the way we understand it at all really,” she says. But she still finds the process engaging for both of them, saying it’s brought them closer. Bunny uses her buttons all day long, but if she ever becomes disinterested in the buttons, Devine says, “then that’s it, it’s fine. It’s all about our relationship.”

heise + | Build Maker Faire mascots as stamps with FreeCAD

This time we build a stamp with the open source software FreeCAD and manufacture it in the 3D printer with the appropriate elastic material.

FreeCAD is free, open source software for creating three-dimensional models. In the make article “Ring free for FreeCAD”, we have already shown how to use FreeCAD to design a finger ring with embossed and attached lettering and have it manufactured by the service provider using metal 3D printing. The FreeCAD drawing tools were only briefly discussed, which is why this time a stamp is constructed with the help of an image template and also 3D printed. The stamp plate is made of flexible, rubber-like material, while the handle is made of solid plastic.

You can download FreeCAD (Download) for the Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. After you have installed the program, start a new document via the Dashboard . First save it under File / Save under the name “Makey”, because in this example the contours of the Maker-Faire mascot, the robot Makey.

On the left side of the program there is a tree view in which the document structure is shown. As soon as you create a new object, it is there again. If you click on it, the properties window opens below the tree view, in which the parameters of the object can be adjusted.

marvel’s-spider-man-miles-morales-review:-the-first-truly-great-game-for-ps5

Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales review: The first truly great game for PS5

(Pocket-lint) – When Marvel’s Spider-Man first came out for PS4 in 2018, we were mostly blown away by its mechanics – the way you could swing from building to building in order to navigate New York City. The game had so much more to it than that, but web-slinging and swinging never grew old, all the way through to the end of the campaign and even the DLC chapters that came after.

The same can partly be said of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a sequel, of sorts, that swaps Peter Parker for his younger counterpart across a roughly eight-hour story. This time, however, it’s joined by some amazing tech wizardry made possible by the PlayStation 5.

The game is also available for PS4, of course, but the expanded graphical features and loading times on the next-gen machine are something to behold. In fact, it can be argued that this is the first, truly great “exclusive” for the console – and a brilliant way to kick start the next generation.

Spider-Men

That begins with the eponymous lead character himself. Morales first appeared in Brian Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man comic books in 2011 and was partly created to strike that series (set in an alternative universe) apart from the regular Marvel universe Spider-Man books. He replaced a (spoiler alert) deceased Peter Parker.

However, the black character of Puerto Rican descent became so popular that, even after the cancellation of the Ultimate comics, he was a shoo-in to jump dimensions. This left us with two Spider-Men co-existing (the Spider-verse aside) and that’s where developer Insomniac draws its inspiration for this game.

  • Best PlayStation 5 games: Amazing PS5 titles to pick up

It’s a genius move and clearly one that was planned from the start, considering how Morales’ origin story was told in the first game. Also bitten by a genetically modified spider, he has a few similar moves to Parker, including the ability to stick to walls, super strength, and a penchant for flinging himself around the city. However, he also comes with a few new powers that make the game more interesting still.

Morales can zap enemies and objects with electrical energy – a venom strike or blast – and he can turn invisible for short bouts (something you earn later in the game). These both provide some unique gameplay tools that alter some of the stealth and combat mechanics specifically.

In terms of fisticuffs, much is the same as the original game. It’s combo-tastic as you hop, evade and catapult yourself from one enemy to another. Even massive bouts with 10 foes or more are possible to win if you keep moving, while gadgets and web shots will undoubtedly help – if you unlock them in-game.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

Also like the first game – which has been remastered for PS5 too, as part of an Ultimate Edition – you can collect different suits that unlock different extra abilities or bonuses. And, even if you settle on the same power-ups throughout, it’s great fun seeing Spider-Man mark II winging around in all manner of snazzy costumes.

To be continued

The story follows on a year after the events in the first game (and subsequent DLC) and is set during Christmas time in a snowy NYC. Parker departs on a much needed holiday overseas and leaves a raw but rapidly improving 17-year-old Morales to cover. Sure as eggs is eggs, a major criminal event unfolds that could put the whole of the city at risk, and the younger, less experienced Spidey has to step up to the plate.

We won’t spoil the story, as that’s much of the fun, but will tell you that an all-new organisation is in town – The Underground – replete with purple neon weaponry and armour. While evil corporation Roxxon is still going on with its evilly corporate ways.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

This not only leads to bombastic story missions, but trouble spots, side missions, and crimes to take care of all around the city. Plus, as the game progresses, you get some extra tasks to perform here and there from the likes of The Prowler (we won’t give away who he is right now).

Travelling between missions by swinging around the city is clearly, stupendously fun – as we keep harking on about – but should you get tired of it you can also fast-travel between subway stations, as per the original game. The big difference here is that, thanks to the power of PS5, there’s no Spider-Man on a train animations required – it takes seconds to load the next part of the map using the internal SSD.

Talking about our next generation

The other obvious benefit of the game running on next-generation hardware is just how incredible it looks. You get two graphics options to play the game with on PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition. The first runs in 30 frames-per-second and offers all the bells and whistles afforded by the console’s GPU. That includes a native 4K resolution, ray tracing (for accurate lighting effects), and other visual enhancements.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

Alternatively, you can opt to play the game in 60fps, but will have to forego any of the visual improvements, including ray tracing. Resolution is also dropped a little, switching from a stable 4K to something more dynamic – which can raise and drop dramatically in busier scenes.

  • PS5 ray tracing list: Which next-gen games have ray tracing?

Personally, we much prefer the 30fps mode, purely to see New York City at its finest. And, while we’ve seen ray tracing in action on PC gaming rigs before, it’s use here is simply superb. Reflections in puddles, office block windows, even the more plastic areas of Spidey’s suits make for a much more realistic look. And when night falls, the entire city looks incredible, both from the roof tops and down at street level.

  • Brace yourselves, Call of Duty gamers – the excuses are coming! (promo)

Audio too is improved through a new PS5 ability – it is presented with superb 3D spatial channels that sound excellent when played in headphones. Of course, it can’t beat a proper surround sound home theatre setup, but it’s something new and exciting for those who just don’t have that kind of cash.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

And finally, the PS5’s DualSense controller gets a workout as well. Not only is haptic feedback used well, but the adaptive triggers are purposely adjusted to give them two levels of force when swinging from web to web. You feel more immersed in the act, that’s for sure.

Verdict

Not only is Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales a great game in its own right, it is effectively a tech demo for what the PlayStation 5 is capable of doing on day one. And it should therefore be included in every owner’s library, even if it’s for that reason alone.

Like the new Spider-Man himself, it’s shorter than its predecessor, but it still crams a whole lot of play into both the story and side missions. Plus, New York City has never looked so fine, with its snowy streets and holiday season appeals.

Voice acting is superb throughout too and, if this is a taste of what a full-on Spider-Man could be in future, we’d place our order right now.

Welcome to the next generation. Oh yes.

  • Brace yourselves, Call of Duty gamers – the excuses are coming! (promo)

Samsung highlights the key features of Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Buds Live in new infographic

Samsung launched the bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live earbuds in August alongside the Galaxy Note20 smartphones. Now, the company posted an infographic, showing how its new hearables stack up to the already existing Galaxy Buds+.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ vs Samsung Galaxy Buds Live

The Samsung Galaxy Buds were decent and when the Galaxy Buds+ arrived with major boost in audio quality, we were really impressed. The Korean company says they provide “superior sound quality for an immersive listening experience”.

It’s not the Galaxy Buds Live sound terrible, but due to “comfortable usability and unique design”, they are certainly less immersive. However the Buds Live do have ANC, which is missing on the Galaxy Buds+.

The Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Buds Live also have a different charging case and different colors. Due to the unique form factor, battery capacity is also different, but in the end Samsung promises equal total time of playtime – around 21-22 hours.

The Galaxy Live’s 12mm drive got highlighted and contrasted to the Galaxy Buds+ dual setup of woofer and tweeter. Both earphone models have two external/outer microphones that are aligned in a way to always find where the voice comes from so it doesn’t get blocked or muted during calls.

There is another major difference that Samsung did not mention in its official infographic – the price. Both can be purchased right now from the company’s website, and while the Galaxy Buds Live goes for €199/£179/$169, the Galaxy Buds+ is up to 20% cheaper (market dependent).

VPI Prime 21+

Our Verdict

The Prime 21+ builds on its impressive predecessor to become one of the class leaders at this level

For

  • Bold and controlled presentation
  • Dynamic expression and insight
  • Solid build

Against

  • Tough competition at this level
  • Manual speed change

VPI’s Prime record player has been something of a favourite of ours since we reviewed it back in 2015. Since then, the deck has become one of our go-to recommendations for anyone wanting a true taste of high-end vinyl replay without a five-figure expenditure.

The new VPI Prime 21+ (the number signifies the model year) aims to build on that solid foundation with a series of well-considered changes aimed at improving performance, ease of use and cosmetics.

There are two versions of this deck. The ‘+’ model we have on test here includes the brand-new VPI Shyla moving coil cartridge (custom-made by Audio Technica) and the company’s Weisline tonearm cable (manufactured by Nordost). The base version of the 21 comes without these two options and costs £4500 ($4500).

Build

While this deck is instantly recognisable as a Prime, VPI’s changes have resulted in a smarter but more conventional deck. The most obvious difference is to the tonearm, which now has a gimbal bearing design rather than the less common uni-pivot of the original. It seems that some people took against the wobbling that is part and parcel of a uni-pivot design when it’s being handled (but not when it’s actually playing a record).

VPI Prime 21+ tech specs

Solid machined 53mm-thick chassis with aluminium plate

Painted textured black

27cm gimbal 3D-printed tonearm

Stainless steel motor

Stainless steel and delrin record clamp

HW40 isolation reference feet

This new arm is a 27cm, 3D-printed design that feels less fussy in use than its predecessor. It’s easy to set up and the bearings feel smooth, though we could detect a small amount of play in its fore/aft movement. VPI claims the new arm marks an improvement in performance over the original, but it’s hard to verify that without a side-by-side comparison.

As before, arm bias can be set in two ways. There’s a pivoted mechanism that adds suitable sideways force, or a tried-and-trusted VPI method where the innate tension in the twisted tonearm connection wire (the looped piece of cable that comes out the back of the arm) supplies the outward force. Either method works well.

Another obvious generational change is to the Prime’s feet, which are now the same isolating designs used on the £15,000 ($15,000) VPI HW40 deck introduced last year. These should make this deck less susceptible to external vibrations than before.

The 43mm-thick curvy plinth looks much the same as the previous model, but is now made up of a 3mm aluminium top plate on an MDF base, rather than having a steel plate tacked onto the underside as before. In both cases, the metal is intended to add rigidity and damping to the structure. There’s now a choice of two plinth finishes, too: the original black or a rather nice walnut option for the MDF section.

The detached AC motor unit has also been tweaked. It still has the same substantial high-mass aluminium casework to control resonances, but the internal control circuit has been updated to help speed stability. The speed change from 33 1/3 to 45rpm is done manually by moving the belt from one step on the motor pulley to the next. An electronic option would be preferable, but this works well enough.

The VPI’s main bearing is still an inverted design that uses a hardened steel shaft, a 60 Rockwell hardened chrome ball, and a phosphor bronze bushing completed by a PEEK (polyether-ether-ketone) thrust disc. It’s designed for precision, low noise and longevity. That chunky platter is still machined from 6061aluminium bonded and has a damping plate made of MDF. The whole lot weighs in at a substantial 9kg.

There’s now a felt mat supplied, too, for those who don’t like the idea of putting their cherished vinyl directly on the beautifully machined surface, which was the case in the last model. You can still use the deck without the mat, mind you, and we’d actually be tempted to do so; the Prime’s sound is a little clearer and more sharply etched when used this way.

The screw-on steel/Delrin record clamp remains unchanged. Having tried the player with and without, the clamp is well worth using for the improvement in focus and sonic authority it gives the 21+’s presentation.

This deck isn’t a particularly large unit by high-end standards. Measuring 52cm wide and 40cm deep, it should fit on the top shelf of most supports. Despite VPI’s attempts to design in isolation, it still pays to use a rigid, low-resonance platform for the best results.

Features

Make sure everything is level before you start to set up the VPI+ – it also helps to keep the support as far from the speakers as practical to reduce the amount of vibration energy fed into the turntable’s structure. You’ll get a better sound if you do these things.

This deck is designed to be easy to set-up, and not only does the company provide a manual on a USB stick, it also includes a handy video. We’re pleased to find that VPI supplies an electronic stylus scale in the box to help set the tracking force accurately, as well as a nifty alignment gauge for getting the cartridge in exactly the right position. We wish more manufacturers were this thoughtful.

The company claims that this turntable package can be up and running in around 20 minutes, and that proves to be the case, provided you’ve set-up a record player before. Apart from the option of choosing which arm bias arrangement to use, there is nothing unusual or quirky here. Our ‘+’ version comes with the cartridge already fitted and aligned, which saves a bit of work.

The Shyla moving coil works without issue into our usual Cyrus Phono Signature/PSX-R2 phono stage. We adjust its input loading to the recommended 100ohms and set the cartridge’s tracking weight to 1.9g, and it all works well. In performance terms, this moving coil is certainly good enough to compete with similarly priced alternatives from the established cartridge manufacturers.

The rest of the system is our usual reference set-up of Burmester 088/911 Mk 3 amplifier and ATC SCM50 speakers. We also give the Naim Supernait 3 integrated amp a whirl to see how the VPI performs with more price-compatible kit.

Sound

Anyone familiar with VPI’s Prime turntable will find the 21+’s sound instantly recognisable but with improved clarity and precision. This is an immensely confident record player. While sounding big and bold, its presentation is pleasingly underpinned with heaps of subtlety when the music demands.

We start with Orff’s Carmina Burana and are impressed with the VPI’s sonic scale and authority. It’s rare to find a deck at this level that sounds so composed and controlled. Detail – and there’s plenty of it – is organised in a musically cohesive way.

We love how this record player renders large-scale dynamic shifts and backs them up with a thrilling sense of power. There’s plenty of punch when the music demands, but also an ability to track low-level instrumental strands, even when the music becomes complex.

Tonally, there’s little to complain about here either. The Prime 21+ package sounds even, open and convincing. This is an impressively balanced performer that handles the balance between bite, body and refinement well.

Stereo imaging is good too, with an open and expansive soundstage layered with carefully placed instruments and voices. Importantly, things don’t become jumbled when the music erupts – those familiar with Carmina Burana will know that there’s no shortage of dynamic excesses and dense instrumentation in this piece.

We switch to Light A Fire by Bob Marley and the Wailers, and this VPI continues to shine. While it doesn’t quite have the rhythmic snap of the similarly priced Rega Planar 10 or the sheer drive of the cheaper Vertere DG-1 package, neither of these alternatives sounds quite so solid and authoritative.

On the track Kinky Reggae, the bass is firm and deep, anchoring the rest of the presentation impressively. Meanwhile, Marley’s voice comes through with clarity and passion and is nicely separated from the instrumental backdrop. We take in a wide range of music during our testing, from Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis to Springsteen’s Born To Run, and this VPI never disappoints.

Verdict

The VPI Prime+’s amount of punch, sense of power and degree of insight put it thoroughly among the class leaders. This is a hugely capable and rounded package with a wide range of sonic talents that work across musical genres.

Add solid build, ease of set-up and the generous supply of accessories in the box, and it’s clear that VPI has pushed its Prime turntable a useful step forward. If you’re looking for a record-playing package at this level, this one simply has to be on your shortlist.
