CES 2021: ASUS introduces a wide range of new laptops for work, gaming, and education

We already got a look at new gaming laptops from ASUS and its ROG sub-brand earlier in the week, but the company has also announced new additions to the TUF Gaming, Zenbook, Expertbook, Chromebook, and VivoBook laptop series, as well as a new laptop aimed at those learning from home.

According to Samson Hu, co-CEO of ASUS, this new laptop lineup continues the company’s legacy of “elevating productivity and entertainment to new heights”. Featuring Intel 11th Gen Core processors with and without vPro support, the new ASUS laptops are certified as Intel Evo platforms, which according to Chris Walker, corporate vice president of mobile computing platforms at Intel, offers “uncompromising performance, connectivity, and foundations for innovation powering the latest PC experiences”.

The Zenbook series will receive a new dual-screen laptop, featuring up to the latest generation Intel Core-i9 processor and Nvidia RTX 3070 laptop GPU to power the 15-inch 4K OLED HDR screen, complemented by a secondary full-width 4K ScreenPad Plus touchscreen. Certified as an Nvidia Studio Laptop and equipped with up to 32GB of RAM, and up to a 1TB PCIe 3.0 SSD, the Zenbook Pro Duo 15 OLED will feature a wide variety of I/O ports, including 2x Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports, and WiFi 6 connectivity.

There will also be a new, smaller dual-screen Zenbook laptop added to the series. Despite its 16.9mm profile, the ZenBook Duo 14 uses a FullHD NanoEdge display as the main screen and features Intel’s 11th generation of mobile processors with Xe graphics, with the option to add an Nvidia MX450 GPU. Besides these two models, ASUS is also working on a ZenBook 13 OLED powered by Intel or AMD latest processors, a new ZenBook Flip 15 featuring 11th Gen core H series CPUs and Nvidia GTX 1650, and the new ZenBook 14 which combine up to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with an Nvidia MX450.

The ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo 15 OLED is scheduled to release in Q2 2021, starting at £2999.99. The ZenBook Duo 14 is expected in early February, starting at £1499.99. The ZenBook 13 OLED, the new ZenBook Flip 15, and the new ZenBook 14 will be available from Q2 2021.

Just like the ExpertBook B9, the CX9 also meets the MIL-STD 810H U.S. military test standards. ASUS also debuted the 15.6-inch Chromebook Flip CX5, equipped with an 11th Gen Intel Core processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics supports WiFi 6 connectivity, up to 512GB of storage, and up to 16GB of RAM. Designed to “appeal to a young generation of users”, the CX5 flip uses a white metallic casing with a ceramic feel and an Obsidian Velvet texture in the palm rest area for improved comfort. Its 57Wh battery is enough for 12 hours of continuous use, which should be enough for most workdays.

ASUS VivoBook 15, VivoBook 17 and VivoBook Flip 14 – the company is preparing laptops with AMD Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U processors

For VivoBook 15 and VivoBook 17 we also expect average quality of IPS-like matrices with Full HD resolution and probably approx. 60% sRGB color coverage. In the case of the VivoBook Flip 14 we should get a better screen quality, additionally with touch support. Unfortunately, we did not know the prices, but we are talking about low-end laptops – the amounts should not exceed 3500 PLN.

Intel released its first separate graphics card: the Iris Xe MAX Graphics

Intel’s first stand-alone graphics card is based on the DGe graphics chip of the Xe-LP architecture, not the Xe-HPG architecture for gaming.

The first laptops with Intel’s Iris Xe Max graphics are now available to order

Earlier this month, the public got its first glimpse of Iris Xe Max, Intel’s new discrete GPU for thin-and-light laptops, at an Acer press event. Today, Intel revealed the full first wave of laptops that will include this GPU, some of which are available for purchase now in certain countries.

The laptops include the Acer Swift 3X, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1, and the Asus VivoBook Flip TP470. The Inspiron 15 is available in the US at Best Buy; Acer has previously said to expect the 3X in the US in December. Both the Swift 3X and the Inspiron 15 are also available in China through JD.com. Intel says the Asus VivoBook is coming “shortly” to both the US and China.

Intel’s Iris Xe Max graphics are primarily intended for portable systems for content creators. “We set out to redefine the role of discrete graphics in thin-and-light laptops and address a growing segment of creators who want more portability,” said Roger Chandler, Intel vice president and general manager of Client XPU Product and Solutions, in a statement.

The three new laptops also include Intel’s 11th Gen “Tiger Lake” mobile processors, as well as Intel’s Deep Link technology, which allows certain applications to leverage both discrete and integrated graphics for creative work. Intel claims that Tiger Lake systems paired with Iris Xe Max graphics can provide “seven times faster AI-based creation” than similar laptops with third-party GPUs.

The company also claims its GPU can deliver “great thin-and-light 1080p gaming on popular games.” We shouldn’t get too excited about this until benchmarks come out — it would certainly be surprising to see laptops of this size running Microsoft Flight Simulator. But Iris Xe integrated graphics do a decent job with stuff like Overwatch, so you may very well be able to run lighter fare if Acer, Dell, and Asus can keep cooling under control.

I got some hands-on time with the Acer Swift 3X, which starts at $899.99. It’s a slim and portable machine, with a decent port selection and a nice-looking screen. But our test unit wasn’t finalized, so I couldn’t put the graphics to the test. Much of whether that system (and others like it) are worth their price tags for creators will depend on GPU performance, battery life, and display quality — so keep an eye out for our upcoming reviews.

4 GB LPDDR4x and 10nm SuperFin: Intel gives details about the Iris Xe Max

Last week ASUS and Acer presented their new notebook models with the first dedicated GPU from Intel. Technical details about the Iris-Xe-Max-GPU (previously called DG1) were not provided by either the notebook manufacturer or Intel. Today they come from Intel and people are talking about the alternative to the entry-level GPUs, which are used when the integrated variant is no longer sufficient.

As part of a preview of the Tiger -Lake processors we could use the Core i7 – 0915 already look at G7 with Iris-Xe graphic. This offers 96 Execution Units (EUs) with a cycle of 1 , 35 GHz. In our benchmarks, the integrated GPU doubles the graphics performance compared to its predecessor.

The relatively high encode performance is probably one of the reasons why Intel wants to use the DG1 or, better, the Xe architecture in the data center. As an SG1, it should offer the same performance as four DG1s and still be used as a small form factor card. Intel is targeting cloud gaming and video streaming applications that are designed for particularly low latencies. The SG1 should go into production shortly and, as I said, be available this year.

In terms of gaming performance, a notebook with Iris-Xe-Max-GPU should in most cases be on par with a notebook with MX 350 – be GPU. In a few cases the Intel solution is even significantly faster.

Information about the power consumption of the Iris-Xe-Max-GPU would be interesting. For a Core i7 – 1185 G7 with a GPU clock of 1, 35 GHz we have a maximum power consumption 14 W measured. The TDP of the Iris-Xe-Max-GPU should be 23 W lie.

Today, Intel officially announced Intel Iris Xe MAX graphics, a new version of the Xe GPU architecture for thin-and-light laptops. Intel Iris Xe MAX is based on the same Xe-LP microarchitecture used for Xe graphics on Intel 11th Gen Core mobile series processors.

The Intel Xe-LP microarchitecture was first announced during Intel Architecture Day earlier this year with the aim of delivering “advanced performance for mobile platforms”. The jump up to Xe MAX graphics improves performance further and gives developers access to an “open and common software framework”.

Intel Xe MAX platforms also feature Intel Deep Link technology and support for PCIe Gen 4. Deep Link is particularly important, as it brings together processing engines, allowing developers to “significantly boost content creation workload performance”.

Intel Iris Xe MAX graphics will be available for the first time starting this year, featuring in several laptop models including the Acer Swift 3x, ASUS VivoBook Flip TP470 and the Dell Inspiron 7000 2-in-1. This is just the beginning for Xe though, as we move into 2021, Intel will be bringing Xe-LP based GPUs to even more laptops at various price points, as well as the first Xe Discrete GPU for desktops.

The company is aiming the Xe Max laptops at content creators. Intel is using its ownership over both the Tiger Lake CPU and the discrete GPU in a feature called Deep Link, combining the processing with a software framework to boost performance.

This includes dynamic power sharing between the CPU (with the integrated Iris Xe graphics) and the discrete Iris Xe Max GPU. In a Handbrake encode, Intel claimed the 28W CPU in the Acer Swift 3x easily bested an Intel reference system combining a Core i7-1185G7 with an Nvidia GeForce MX350. It also outperformed when enhancing details in Adobe Lightroom against a Lenovo Slim 7 with a 10th Gen Core i7 and MX350.The power sharing sounds somewhat similar to AMD’s SmartShift tech.

Additionally, Deep Link lets the processors share Xe graphics, DP4a instructions, and Xe media encoders. In a demo of Topaz Gigapixel AI, Intel showed the Xe Max and Tiger Lake upscaling images with OpenVINO and DLBoost DP4a far faster than Ice Lake with an MX350 using Tensorflow. The combined Iris Xe and Iris Xe Max, in the demo, finished faster than the competitive laptop completed a single image.

The combined media encoding should allow for up to 1.78x faster encoding than using an RTX 2080. Going up against a Gigabyte Aero 15 with a Core i9-109080HK and an RTX 2080 Super

/60fps AVC to 1080p / 60 fps HEVC faster. Intel says this is thanks to Intel’s QuickSync with the integrated and discrete graphics working together simultaneously, compared to Nvidia’s NVENC.

Intel is also working on ways to use the four media encoders present in an Iris Xe Max laptop (two in the CPU’s integrated graphics, two in the dedicated GPU) to accelerate single stream encoding. Intel hopes to have that available in the first half of 2021, and says the performance should potentially double that of a single RTX 2080 using NVENC.

Deep Link will support HandBrake, OBS, Topaz Gigabpixel, XSplit and more today, with Blender, CyberLink anad others getting support in the near future.

Intel isn’t positioning Iris Xe Max as a gaming chip, but is claiming you can get solid 1080p performance versus an MX350. In a chart, Intel showed that if offers more performance in games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, The Witcher 3, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Hitman 2, Metro Exodus and Grid 2019, though the MX350 won out in Borderlands 3 and Gears Tactics.

Interestingly, while the Iris Xe Max beat the Iris Xe in Metro Exodus (in fact, the integrated graphics also surpassed the MX350), both the integrated graphics and MX350 were faster in DOTA 2. This seems like an abnormality, in that the higher clocked GPU without shared RAM should generally deliver higher frame rates. Intel said it will test games and have a list in the Intel Graphics Command Center to ensure the best-performing GPU is used.

This is not a high-end part, and unlike the media encoding and content creation workloads, Intel isn’t doing multi-GPU in any form right now. The laptops will switch between integrated and dedicated Xe Graphics as deemed best.

Of course, we’ll have to get our hands on these laptops ourselves to see just how well Intel Xe Max performs in our testing.

Intel told Tom’s Hardware that DG1 will also come to desktop, as a discrete card for some entry and mid-level prebuilts from OEMs. That will happen in 2021, but these definitely aren’t enthusiast class chips — we’ll need Intel’s Xe HPG for that, which will arrive some time later in 2021.

A bunch of Asus’ latest laptops featuring Intel’s 11th Gen processors are now available for purchase.

The one I’m most excited about is the ZenBook Flip S, which Asus says is the world’s thinnest OLED convertible laptop and the first Asus laptop to be verified by Intel’s Evo platform. The Flip S has a gorgeous OLED screen as well as excellent speakers and a light, convertible build. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for a great streaming or multimedia experience.

Another solid buy here is the ZenBook 14 UX425EA. This one doesn’t have a touchscreen like the Flip S, but it has shown better performance and better battery life. (There’s a 1W screen option with increased power efficiency.) Both of these models have a cool feature called NumberPad 2.0, which can make an LED NumPad appear on the touchpad.

Also in the lineup are the ZenBook S UX393 (the world’s lightest and thinnest 3:2 3K laptop, per Asus), the ZenBook 14 UX435 (which includes a second screen with Asus’ ScreenPad technology), and a whole slew of new Vivobooks. And there’s the ZenBook Pro 15 UX535, an OLED creator-focused ZenBook that still has 10th Gen processors.

Intel’s Iris Xe Max GPU Barely Beats Nvidia’s GeForce MX330 In Latest Benchmark

The Iris Xe Max (DG1) GPU, which is already shipping to OEMs, has graced the grounds of Geekbench 5. The submissions (via Tum_Apisak) show that the looming GPU’s performance is somewhere along the lines of AMD’s Radeon RX 550.

Intel has been away from the discrete graphics market for a considerable amount of time now, and the Irix Xe Max marks the chipmaker’s return. The GPU comes equipped with 96 Execution Units (EUs) that boil down to 768 shader cores. The original Iris Xe Max test platform had the GPU with 3GB of GDDR6 memory. However, the same GPU has appeared in Asus’ upcoming VivoBook Flip 14 laptop with 4GB of LPDDR4X memory. It would appear that the Iris Xe Max can be configured with GDDR6 or LPDDR4X memory.

Both Iris Xe Max submissions painted the GPU with a maximum frequency of up to 1.5 GHz. It’s base and boost clock speeds are uncertain at the moment. A previous sighting had the Iris Xe Max clocked up to 1.55 GHz, but that could just be the result of manual overclocking.

Geekbench 5 isn’t the end-all-be-all benchmark for graphics. In the meantime, it’s what’s available. In any event, we should approach the Iris Xe Max’s results with caution: The final product could perform better, or even worse.

The Iris Xe Max never aimed to compete in the performance bracket; therefore, it isn’t a big shocker that the GPU barely beats Nvidia’s GeForce MX330. The Geekbench 5 numbers showed that the Iris Xe Max was just 6.5% faster than the GeForce MX330. On the contrary, the GeForce MX350 delivered up to 16.4% higher performance than Intel’s offering.

In comparison to the Radeon RX 550X, the two-year old AMD GPU outperformed the Iris Xe Max by up to 6%.

We suspect that Intel is creating a small, mobile ecosystem with its Tiger Lake chips, and that’s where the Iris Xe Max’s real value lies. When alone, the Iris Xe Max probably won’t leave a dent on some of its rivals. However, if you were to combine the GPU with Tiger Lake’s iGPU in a multi-GPU setup, that would be another story. Although the concept is unconfirmed, a pair of Xe GPUs have already come forth, proving its feasibility. The dual-GPU arrangement was sporting up to 192 EUs or 1,536 shader cores. That should be 96 EUs from the DG1 and 96 EUs from the Tiger Laker iGPU, so everything apparently falls into place.

The Acer Swift 3X, which is powered by 11th Generation Tiger Lake processors and Iris Xe Max graphics, is scheduled to debut in December. Thereby, it won’t be long until we get to see what the Iris Xe Max is really made of.
