Linux mobile operating system Jolla Sailfish OS 3.4 with multi-user operation in the test Browser engine for apps Updates for developers Article in c’t 24 / 2020 read Jolla has released version 3.4 of its Linux-based mobile operating system under the name of the Finnish National Park Pallas-Yllästunturi. For the first time, you can create up to six additional user accounts in Sailfish OS 3.4. These are restricted and cannot be used to install or remove apps; Android apps cannot even be run at the moment. The main user can also deactivate their access to telephony and SMS. The language can be freely selected for each account. But it is incomprehensible that WLAN networks are also managed separately for each account.
Despite these restrictions, the new multi-user operation can be used to isolate private and professional activities, as all configurations are saved separately with native Sailfish apps. E-mail accounts for work can be created under a special work account. If you switch to the private profile, only private e-mail accounts are integrated. Every user must assign a PIN. In addition, fingerprints for unlocking can be stored for each user. The user account can be changed during operation via the system menu, which can be called up with a swiping gesture from the top of the screen.
Multi-user operation is not yet fully developed and its use currently seems to be primarily aimed at corporate customers. With one of the upcoming updates, Android apps should also be usable in the additional accounts.
