Until recently, sixteen physical cores and thirty-two thread support was the domain of HEDT processors. Everything changed at the time of the release of AMD Ryzen 9 3950 X, which gave the platform AM4 such a behemoth, while at the same time making an unprecedented reshuffle on the market. AMD Ryzen 9 5950 The X successor does not have more execution units, but he did not have to prove anything to anyone, because you will not find a similar product in Intel’s mainstream offer. The test of the AMD Ryzen 9 processor 5950 X will additionally show that the sixteen cores can work with very high clock speeds … at times even exceeding the magic barrier 5000 MHz.

The AMD Zen 3 architecture has undergone a number of significant modifications that allowed to increase the performance of a single core by approximately 20% against Zen 2, eliminating the internal latency which is the biggest problem of AMD Ryzen processors. First of all, one CCX cluster now has 8 instead of 4 cores, spiced up with SMT support and 32 MB L3 cache. Individual CCX modules were created in 7 nm TSMC lithography, while cIOD with DDR4 memory controller – 3200 uses 12 nm production process. Communication takes place again via the Infinity Fabric bus, but thanks to reducing internal delays, e.g. between modules, cores, and the main memory or cache, which now has much more for each CCX, a measurable increase in throughput was achieved. The prediction and queuing of orders, management of cache structures were also improved, FPU units were accelerated by increasing their capacity, the ring bus, data collection and integration algorithms were rebuilt. The engineers really did not idle, because the list of modifications is much longer and I have listed only the most important, crucial from the point of performance. In addition, the energy efficiency has been increased plus the Precision Boost 2 technology has been improved, achieving higher clock speeds with a lower supply voltage.

Most cores, cache and highest clock speed – this is AMD Ryzen 9 5950 X, being the flagship representative of the Vermeer family. Theoretically, this is not a processor for players, but since it has the most everything, then …

AMD Ryzen 9 5950 X is a processor with 16 cores and supporting 32 threads at the same time, which could easily represent the HEDT platform, but the manufacturer has even 64 – core models dedicated to the sTRX4 socket, therefore at the premiere of Ryzen 9 3950 X allowed himself to push the boundaries of that time … which he established several times in the past instreamie by introducing 8R units under thatched roofs / 16 In and 12 R / 24IN. The flagship AMD Ryzen 9 5950 X was built on two CCX modules (8 + 8), instead of four as its predecessor (4 +4: 4 + 4), making the most of the key modifications to the Zen 3 architecture. The CPU is also allocated 64 MB L3 cache and 8 MB L2 cache. Oddly enough, no Intel 10 generation does not exist in the same configuration, because Core i9 – 9960 X (16 R / 32 W) did not have a successor, although the Blue offer includes models 12 / 14 / 18 – core. However, these are all HEDT processors, while the hero of today’s review is dedicated to the down-to-earth AMD AM4 platform. It will therefore be the fastest unit in its category, devoid of class competition in the final destination – working machines for all kinds of projects, rendering, archiving, compiling, etc., because computer games cannot use the extra cores yet.

Despite the huge number of cores, AMD Ryzen 9 5950 X surprises with high clock speeds – the base is admittedly only 3400 MHz, but in fact it should not go down below 4000 MHz (looped CInebench R 20 ). However, the Core Boost frequency for single-threaded operations promises to be sensational, because 4900 MHz is a really satisfying value, equal to the top Intel Comet Lake … The manufacturer forgot to mention that proper cooling plus newer incarnations of the Precission Boost and Extended Frequency Range technology can bring out even more. Tested AMD Ryzen 9 5950 X for two best With its cores it even reached the dizzying 5 GHz, when the predecessor had to be satisfied with the maximum 4700 MHz. The engineers did their homework diligently and at the same time set a record, at least in terms of factory settings and clock speeds of more than 19 cores. The rest of the specification does not differ much from the previous standards. We get unlocked multiplier, soldered IHS, dual channel DDR4 memory controller – 3200 plus TDP factor 105IN. The CPU does not have a cooling system, being 50 dollars more expensive than its predecessor and requires a motherboard with a series chipset 500. Models on chips 400 must unfortunately wait for the appropriate BIOS updates.

ATTENTION: On the penultimate pages I added performance scaling tests with Patriot Viper Black DDR4 memory – 3200 CL 16 vs. DDR4 – 3800 CL 15 (module tuning

MHz CL 19) to show why you should invest some money and possibly some time in faster modules. All tests were carried out in synchronous mode, the Infinity Fabric bus worked with timing 3800 MHz – the platform above was unfortunately unstable.
