Competition for Intel and AMD? Samsung is to develop Exynos SoCs for PCs
Source: Hardware Luxx added 18th Jan 2021The large CPU manufacturers Intel and AMD are currently dividing the desktop market between themselves. This could soon come to an end, however, as Samsung apparently has an SoC in the works as an additional player for use in Windows devices. At least that’s what the leaker @TheGalox_ claims in a tweet, according to which the planned CPU should be based on an Exynos processor. Earlier statements of the speaker @Mauri QHD should be the Exynos 1000. In the meantime, an adapted version of the Exynos processor 01 used in the Galaxy S 2100 however much more likely.
Previous Windows on ARM devices, such as the Surface Pro X, have not yet been able to compete with the Measure competition from Intel or AMD. The distance to the Apple M1 is even greater. A Microsoft SQ2 based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen2 works inside the said Surface. The system is currently struggling with a lack of software support and high prices. Recently, however, it became known that Qulacomm is already working on a successor to the 8cx Gen2. Whether its performance can keep up with the competition from Cupertino remains to be seen.
Similar to Qualcomm’s new SoC, the Exynos SoC is currently also available for the supposedly planned Exynos no details. A small indication of what to expect is only provided by Samsung’s statement that graphics chips from AMD will also be used in their own CPUs in the future. It remains to be seen whether the leak will be confirmed and, if so, when Samsung will dare to venture into the ARM notebook / PC market. What is certain, however, is that many manufacturers have recently turned their attention to the potential of ARM chips.
