TSMC has published its figures for the fourth quarter 2020 and for the entire past year. According to the published figures, sales increased by 13% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, but only by 4.4% compared to the three months immediately before. The profit makes a jump of 23%. Business at TSMC is going very well, although you can see that capacities can hardly be increased at the moment.

It only becomes interesting when you look into the details. Production in 5 nm contributed 20% of sales in the fourth quarter 2020. Production in 7 nm takes 29% of sales. The other pieces of cake fall on the 16 nm with 13 % and 28 nm with 11%. 10 and 20 nm play practically none at TSMC Role. The remaining quarter of the total turnover falls on 40 / 45 nm and coarser manufacturing technologies – up to 0, 25 µm.

The production in 5 nm has grown to a considerable production volume at TSMC very quickly. For the full year, the share of sales is only 8%, in the fourth quarter it was already 20% and 2021 this should be Share can still be increased significantly. Production in 7 nm is also growing in proportion, the coarser production steps are correspondingly reduced. However, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the production volume of individual wafers, and TSMC apparently does not want to disclose these details either. Accordingly, the Taiwanese manufacturer can produce fewer chips for companies from China, as these products are otherwise not allowed to be imported into the USA. The share of Chinese customers in sales fell from 22 to 6%.

But TSMC doesn’t have to worry about new customers To worry. The currently tense delivery situation is reflected, among other things, in the fact that all of TSMC’s major customers would like to be allocated larger volumes. AMD is struggling with high demand for processors as well as GPU and custom chips for consoles. Microsoft and Sony would also like to bring more consoles to the man.

For the next quarter and the year 2021 TSMC initially expects similar sales, with one more continued upward trend.
