Introduction and technical specifications of the Cooler Master MM 720

Ultralight mice for Players looking for maximum response speed are on the rise, one of the first models that we were able to test at GEEKNETIC was the Cooler Master MM 720 and now it’s the turn of the review of the Cooler Master MM 720 , a model that expands Cooler Master’s offer in this type of low-weight mice and that bases its design on the mythical CM Spawn.

Beyond its reduced weight of 50 grams and its PixArt PMW sensor 4608 of 16. 16 DPI together with the use of optical switches, the design of this mouse, with a wider and shorter shape than usual, is clearly aimed at users who hold the mouse in “claw” or “claw grip” mode or with only the fingers “finger grip”.

The Cooler Master MM 720 arrives in a box barely larger than the mouse itself, with no frills or superfluous elements. Inside is the mouse with the cable coiled and packaged in plastic, along with two small labels that carry extra PTFE PADs and some stickers to add more grip to the mouse.

The first thing you call MM’s attention 720 is your design. Instead of using a design with a length considerably greater than the width, the relationship in this case is not so defined, with a marked protrusion on the right side that serves to support the ring finger and thus facilitate grip and precision. This lets us see that is not a left-handed mouse , since using it with the left hand is quite complicated.

Similar to the CM Spawn on which it is based, the MM 720 by Cooler Master is intended for those users who use a “claw” or claw grip , or even finger grip, with the fingers. Hence, the area to support the palm is much smaller than that of a conventional mouse.

Its structure and casing, which in practice is the same when looking for the minimum weight, It is perforated with hexagonal holes but maintaining a fairly wide thickness between them, in such a way that the structure remains firm and does not deform when applying pressure.

Those holes are kept on the side rear and sides, but no longer appear towards the front or at the bottom.

At the bottom we have two large PTFE pads to improve gliding, something critical in mice so light. The sensor is centered on the horizontal axis, and a little elevated on the vertical.

We have a button in the lower back area that is used to change the DPI.

Beyond the weight reduction that is achieved with the holes, Cooler Master has also managed to give them an aesthetic sense by integrating inside a large semi-transparent piece under which the holes are placed. RGB LEDs, diffusing the light and revealing, through the holes and the silhouette of the Cooler Master logo, the different colors and effects that the mouse supports and that can be changed from the MasterPlus + software or directly from the mouse by combining the wheel center button with other buttons.

The mouse wheel is made of semi-translucent plastic and rubber and also has a separate RGB system from the rear, so it can be configured or sync.

The illumination of the wheel, beyond the aesthetic aspect, also allows us to know at what DPI level we are, since it changes with the sensitivity that we mark and shows a different color for a few seconds to be able to view it easily and without the need for another indicator dedicated solely to this task.

In the software, unfortunately, we cannot change what DPI level it goes to associated each color.

In addition to some spare parts for the lower PTFE pads, Cooler Master also includes with the MM 800 a series of rubber stickers, with a texture that simulates metal, to add a little more grip to the mouse.

We have two for the main buttons and one for each side.

Stickers fit perfectly and are very flexible, they even allow removing and replacing them with a certain margin.

In general, they are well integrated into the design, although the Right sticker covers several of the holes. Naturally placing these stickers increases the weight of the mouse slightly, and without them we haven’t noticed a lack of grip either.

    Software and Configuration

When we tested the MM 720 the MasterPlus + software was not yet supported. Now, before the launch of the MM 800 we already have full support for the mouse, so we can configure it without problems.

The software is quite simple to use and is well divided into sections, however, it has some details to polish, such as, for example, that it does not allow to adjust the size of the window and it shows with a size very similar to the full screen, something cumbersome especially with ultra-wide screens. We have also detected some USB hangs when starting it on a couple of specific occasions, problems that may possibly be corrected by software in the next updates.

The main interface of the program is divided into the section Buttons, Performance, Lighting, Macros and Profiles.

In Buttons we can adjust the functionality of each of the buttons in the two operating modes it has, that is, either the buttons in normal mode, when we use the mouse, or in the combined mode, which is activated by pressing the wheel button and allows us, by default, to change profiles, change lighting modes or colors.

You can adjust the normal and combined mode functions from this tab, in addition, the lower DPI change button also comes out to adjust.

Performance mode is where we’re going to be able to configure the Pixart sensor from 26. 000 DPI, being able to adjust the DPi of the 7 levels that the mouse has for quick change. It is even possible to adjust the horizontal and vertical DPIs differently in case we need to modify the behavior and sensitivity in each axis.

In this section you can also adjust the adaptation of angle, which allows us to vary the angle of the mouse axes, something that can be useful if, for example, we usually use the mouse rotated from its normal position, in this way, even if it is rotated, we can make it behave as if was in its conventional position, regulating from – 35 degrees to 35 degrees.

We also have the Angle Correction function, which smooths the movements of the mouse to, for example, allow traveling distances in straighter ways, a function that for games The FPS type it is aimed at does not make much sense either.

However, although the correction is remarkable, it is not as exaggerated as in other mice.

The software can also adjust the surface on which we use it, through an initial calibration q It requires zig-zag movements of the mouse to detect the surface. Several different surfaces can be saved in case we use the mouse in several places.

Regarding lighting, we can define different effects and colors either jointly or separately, adjusting the rear part on the one hand and the MM wheel on the other 720.

The macros section allows us to record keyboard and mouse actions to later associate with programmable mouse buttons . We can record actions in real time or add delays manually, in addition to adjusting repetitions.

All this can be saved in one of the five profiles that the Cooler Master MM 800 can store in your memory.

    Analysis and conclusion

We have used the Cooler Master MM 720 as the main mouse for a few days, both for work tasks and for entertainment and games.

Its shape is quite different from that of the usual mice, which makes it a bit difficult to adapt at first. Personally, I usually use a mouse grip in “claw” mode or directly with the fingers without using the palm, so this mouse should adapt perfectly to this use, however, being used to this type of grip in mice more long, at first it costs a bit to get to their shape, even by mistakenly pressing the right ledge instead of clicking.

We must not forget that this projection makes the ring finger support it “flat” instead of on the side, achieving a more comfortable position, but that it is different from the usual grip on a mouse without that pronounced protrusion.

Once we get to this shape, it is noticeable that the fingers rest more widely on the mouse, which also prevents them from rubbing on the surface and allows a much smoother movement, in fact no finger touches the United to the lightness of the mouse and its cable, which makes Even with the cable in the middle it hardly interferes with the movement, we have a very precise mouse with very fast movements. The Pixart PMW sensor 3389 is the same as in the MM 710 and his performance is perfect for this type of use.

We have tested the rubber stickers and it is true that they give a quite different touch, with more “grip” or grip, but Without them you gain some lightness and the mouse, due to its shape, already grips quite well without them

We have two side buttons, something rare but common in this type of mouse that prioritizes simplicity and lightness. In addition, the combined mode allows to have functions for 4 buttons in two quick modes, making that when pressing the central wheel, the buttons have other extra functions, which gives us 8 programmable “virtual” buttons plus the lower one, making those two Side buttons are, in practice, like four if we combine them with the middle click.

In summary, although their shape requires a certain transition period between a normal mouse and one with this design, once we got used to it, the Cooler Master MM 720 has proven to be a very comfortable and lightweight mouse that allows perform movements very quickly and precisely, something competitive shooters and fast-paced gamers will appreciate, and all for a price of 49, 99 euro s quite tight.
