Cyberpunk 2077 – ray tracing for the premiere only on GeForce RTX

There is less than a month until the premiere of Cyberpunk 2077. The RPG of the Polish studio CD Projekt RED has already been “gilded”, numerous gameplay shows are behind us, and the expectations for the game are blown to the limit. However, new information about the upcoming production is still coming to the network. Thanks to the latest issue of PC Gamer magazine, we learned more technical details about the solutions used. Jakub Knapik, art director responsible for visual effects and lighting system at CD Projekt RED, revealed that ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on premiered only on GeForce RTX cards 2000 and 3000 and the GeForce NOW cloud service. This is a big blow to AMD and future Radeon RX owners 6000, who will have to wait for the addition of support (hopefully not to 2021, until the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are released).

Cyberpunk Ray Tracing 2077 will only be available for release on GeForce RTX cards . The game also uses the JALI system based on artificial intelligence to simulate facial expressions, thanks to which it was possible to achieve the same effect in different language versions.

Jakub Knapik explained the difference between traditional global lighting and that based on ray tracing: “we have implemented a hybrid engine (RED Engine 4 – ed.) ray tracing. This means that some systems can be replaced with ray tracing systems. For example, our main global lighting system uses light from the sky, the sun, and other light sources that generate them dynamically. In ray-traced mode, we only use global illumination techniques to create light reflections, while the main light from the sky uses ray tracing solutions, which increases the realism and detail of the scene. ” What’s more, CD Projekt RED has also implemented in-game internal systems for e.g. dynamic simulation of clothes and fluids, multi-layer shaders and improved use of asynchronous computing (the game requires a graphics card supporting DirectX for a reason 12).

One of the goals that the creators of Cyberpunk set themselves 2077 , it was to create realistic facial expressions and better synchronization of the mouth movements than in The Witcher 3. It was decided to use the JALI system in the game, based on machine learning software to automate facial animation. As Sebastian Kalemba, head of the animation department at CD Projekt RED revealed, “capturing facial movements for every character in the game is impossible”, especially for many language versions. JALI turned out to be a remedy for all difficulties, because it not only facilitated the entire process of mapping face and mouth movements, but also allowed for full control and manual corrections in animations, if necessary, in each of the ten languages ​​in which Cyberpunk will be available 2077. You can see the effects in the video above. We will see what it will look like in practice 19 November 2020 of the year on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, when Cyberpunk premieres 2021.
