Although it was officially announced in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 was not really in the works until 2016. This was reported by journalist Jason Schreier on Bloomberg after having carried out a meticulous work of investigation into the complex gestation of the new role-playing game of CD Projekt RED .
Cyberpunk 2077: announced in 2012 but in full development only from 2016
As could have been assumed, furthermore, Schreier indicates as “completely false” the Cyberpunk demo 2077 shown at E3 2018. Developing a product as articulated as an open world RPG proceeds along a bumpy path and requires an uncommon level of dedication from the development team. Many were the allegations of “crunch” against the workers of CD Projekt RED in order to bring
According to Schreier, employees of the Polish firm still felt under pressure when the spring release date was announced 2020. At that time, everyone on CD Projekt RED knew that the game was definitely not ready for release.
If the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 has technical limitations and malfunctions in secondary aspects, the counterparts consoles are still very unsatisfactory today. Apparently the development team underestimated the lack of power of PS4 and Xbox One, as well as the slowness of their storage systems . The restrictions created for the need to contain the contagion from COVID then further damaged the CDPR programs.
The development team had to bring home the pre-release builds of the game and remotely did the testing and refinement work. Also, the team that did this work on the PC was not physically close to who was doing the console versions, which would have resulted in further difficulties.
CD Projekt RED, after having done so to further postponements of the last hour, she found herself forced to release Cyberpunk 2077 when it was still obviously incomplete and not sufficiently refined. The rest is recent history with the removal from the PlayStation Store and an apology from CD Projekt RED co-founder Marcin Iwiński.
Cyberpunk 2077 remains a very complex project and, at least on PC, in many respects it is by no means a disappointing experience, indeed it presents several interesting ideas in terms of narration.
