Yesterday Mozilla Firefox released the new version 82 of his popular browser, there is also an update for the ESR version in the form of the version 78. 4. Both updates contain important security fixes that are intended to close significant security gaps. Firefox 82 received a total of seven bug fixes, with ESR there were two.

Close the security updates that come with Firefox 82 four loopholes, at high risk (CVE – 2017 – 15969, CVE – 2020 – 15254, CVE – 2020 – 15683 and CVE – 2020 – 15684). These would have offered attackers an opportunity to provoke the browser to crash; in the worst case, any program code could have been executed. The errors CVE – 2020 – 15969 and CVE- 2020 – 15683 also existed in ESR and were also fixed there.

Further information and a download of the new versions are available from Mozilla. However, the security updates are not all that has been improved in the new versions. According to Mozilla, the performance has also been optimized. According to this, websites with so-called “Flexbox-based layouts” should be increased by up to 20 Load% faster than was previously the case.

Furthermore, the restoration of previous sessions and the opening of new browser windows in Windows should now work faster. In addition, there are new developments in terms of accessibility and improvements to the “picture-in-picture” mode, which should enable more pleasant video playback. It was only in April this year that Microsoft’s Edge browser overtook Firefox’s market share in Germany. At that time Firefox had a market share of just over 7%. At the top, Google Chrome remains unchallenged with a market share of almost 70 %.
