The Canon EOS R6 unites the worlds: With its moderate resolution sensor, it offers the performance of a professional camera, but remains compact and manageable.

Shortly after the Canon EOS R5, the next mirrorless system camera with full-frame sensor is now available, the EOS R6. There is no equivalent for them in the DSLR world. Specifically, it is aimed at the EOS 6D, but starts with the price of 2700 euros to the features only a few beginners’ ambitions. On the outside, it is based on the EOS R5, but in contrast to this, it does without a more robust magnesium housing, complex seals and a shoulder display. In its place there is a conventional mode dial for the well-known automatic program functions, custom settings and the film function.

The image sensor seems to be borrowed from the EOS-1D X Mark III. Like this one, it has a resolution of moderate 19 Megapixels with an extreme light intensity up to ISO 102. 400 – extends even to ISO 204. 800. In addition, like the EOS R5, it offers integrated 5-axis image stabilization (IBIS). It is supposed to compensate for up to five f-stops and, depending on the lens connected, works with its optical image stabilizer (IS). Then up to eight f-stops should be possible.

The sensor-based phase autofocus (dual-pixel AF) has a considerable number of measurement fields (6072) to disposal. In automatic mode, the autofocus tracks the subjects over the entire sensor area, with manual measuring field or area selection over the entire sensor height and 90 Percentage of the width. The sensitivity of the autofocus is also impressive. In the test, it worked safely even in the lowest light. According to Canon, this should work down to -6.5 LW. This high level of sensitivity enables the camera, even with very weak lenses like the RF 800 mm F 11 IS STM, which was available to us for the test, to focus reliably. However, the selection of the AF point is then limited to the central area of the image.
