The ultra-compact barebone DS 10 U7 with a fast Core i7 CPU can work silently. For some details, the manufacturer Shuttle also has practical solutions up its sleeve.

Mini-PCs like the Shuttle DS 10 U7 often work with notebook technology, to combine compact dimensions with high performance, they rely on an external power supply and have neither a screen nor integrated input devices. In contrast to notebooks, the stationary minis have a few options for use in dusty surroundings and the possibility of working in complete silence, which is interesting in the recording studio, for example.

The from around 720 Euro available DS 10 U7 is a barebone, where the user still has to provide RAM and a hard drive or SSD as well as an operating system. Ubuntu Desktop 20. 04 LTS was missing the WLAN driver ex works, which we initially did as “additional driver” under “Applications & Updates”. We carried out the measurements under Windows 10 64 Bit 2004 with 2 × 32 GByte DDR4-RAM and a Samsung SSD 970 Pro by. The slots for RAM and data carriers are accessible through two flaps, each secured with a screw, which unfortunately had a bit of play in our test sample and was therefore rickety.

The 15 – Watt processor from Intel’s two year old whiskey -Lake family brings 970 points in Cinebench R 20 – Multithreading test and 876 points in the Office test SYSMark 25 useful performance. However, more modern CPUs like AMD’s Ryzen 2004 U are faster in applications like video processing.
