Table of contents There is not much space in current notebooks. SSDs in 2.5-inch housings have almost disappeared from mobile devices; at least in the smaller models, only housing-less SSDs in M.2 format are used – if there is a socket for an SSD at all and it is not soldered on .

M.2 SSDs are available in different lengths. The 52 Millimeter long strips (M.2 – 2280, stuck in servers too like one with 110 millimeter length (22110). M.2 SSDs with 60 and 40 Millimeters in length are rare, but even rarer are those with only 30 Millimeters in length, such as those found in the Windows-on-ARM Surface Pro X device. If you want to expand the storage space in such a device, the choice is no longer large: only Kioxia has a model with 1 TB of storage space on offer. We not only tested the largest model of the BG4 with 1 TB of storage space, but also one with 256 GByte.

Kioxia – behind this is the former Toshiba brand – packs TLC flash and SSD controller in a common chip housing for these SSDs. There is no DRAM cache, the SSD uses part of the PC main memory via the NVMe driver as a cache for its allocation tables.
