Remove old notebook displays, prepare for handicraft projects with Raspi & Co. Purchase or upcycling? Remove notebook screen Connect the display True to the motto “Do the scrap quickly”, displays of old or defective notebooks can be misused and reused elsewhere. In a few simple steps, they can be used as a screen for a Raspberry Pi (or any other device with screen output). This not only saves money – the image quality of a good laptop display usually surpasses that of the small Raspi plug-on displays from retailers , HDMI or composite. A controller board specially designed for the panel takes over the signal transmission. This solution does not require any additional software on the signal source side, so it is compatible with any hardware and any operating system.

The photo shows a controller board for an LCD panel from HP with a Realtek RTD 255 D-Chip, the labeling of which was removed for unknown reasons.

Purchase or upcycling? Not every handicraft project needed a large notebook screen. For a greenhouse control or a weather station, a two- or four-line LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or a small OLED display (Organic Light Emitting Diode) from retailers is sufficient. Matching TFT screens are available as plug-in boards (HAT) for the Raspi with resolutions from 320 x 200 points. This means that extensive status reports, simple user interfaces or multimedia data can be displayed.
