Philips’ Hue lighting system needs hardware that mediates between ZigBee lights and the home network. With the competition from Wiz, everything works directly via WiFi.

The French company Wiz has been offering networked light sources that use the WLAN standard in the 2.4 GHz band for some time. Sales in Germany are now starting. Wiz was bought by the lighting specialist Signify, which is also the new home of the Hue system after it was spun off from the Philips Group. The systems from Wiz and Hue therefore belong to the same stud, but have completely different genes.

The range of retrofit lamps is extensive: Wiz has lamps for socket types E 27, E 14 and GU 10 in almost all variations on offer: warm white fixed, combined warm / cold white lamps, RGB lamps and various filament lamps in a retro look. Accessories include a switchable socket, a motion detector and a remote control. We tested motion detectors and remote controls – together with three E 27 – lamps.

The motion detector looks a bit cheap. Every detected movement is signaled by a blue flickering LED next to the movement sensor, so that you inevitably look up at it. While the two E 27 he lamps with plastic diffuser with their adhesive residues in the same notch, the noble filament lamp with glass bulb stands out positively. The Wiz A 67 / E 26 is significantly more voluminous than an ordinary light bulb and is good with a luminous flux of around 2000 Lumen as a replacement for a 100 -Watt lightbulb.
