#heiseshow: The next attack – why we need secure encryption
Source: Heise.de added 12th Nov 2020It seems as safe as the annual return of autumn: Security politicians criticize strongly encrypted communication services and demand access for investigators. The latest example is a previously leaked draft for a declaration by the EU Council of Ministers. With reference to the terrorist attack in Vienna, it calls for “innovative approaches” and technical solutions for breaking encryption. This renewed demand for back doors in Whatsapp, Signal & Co. was immediately followed by massive criticism, how things will continue is not yet foreseeable. On this occasion, we want to summarize in the current #heiseshow what speaks against the weakening of encryption.
How widespread is secure encryption and what is the differences between the different forms? Why is only end-to-end encryption a real protection and where can you find it? What problem do investigators have? What is behind the concepts of a master key or a back door, what are other “innovative approaches” to breaking the protection? What risks do the attacks on encryption entail, what direct effects would their implementation have? Is there no compromise between the demands of the encryption critics and the data protectionists? Can we put the topic on file at some point?
Jürgen Kuri (@jkuri) and Martin Holland (@fingolas) from the newsroom of heise online discuss these and many other questions – also from the audience – live with our Senior Fellow Security Jürgen Schmidt (@ju 720) in a new episode of the #heiseshow.
