After broadcasting the teardown live on YouTube last Friday iFixit has published the images complete with details on what is inside the new iPhones 12 and iPhone 12 Pro . The company demonstrates the presence of some changes compared to last year, and some gems such as the possibility of replacing the iPhone display 12 Pro with that of the iPhone 12 and vice versa.

The same panel, in fact, can work both if installed on the base model and on the “Pro” variant, even if there is a small difference between the two models in terms of maximum brightness. The Pro’s display is in fact slightly brighter. Another interesting detail, among the “secrets” discovered during the teardown, is that the two smartphones are very similar under the body , to such an extent that iPhone 12 has a sort of plastic spacer where the Pro implements the tele modules and LiDAR sensor in the rear camera. The two modules are in fact absent on the iPhone 12.

Both devices use modular components , therefore easily replaceable and a godsend for do-it-yourself repairs. Among these we have the SIM slots, often subject to breakage. A new improvement in terms of repairs is related to the introduction of new rubber seals to protect the speaker grilles from various types of infiltration by keeping them in place: “This makes it easier to remove the speaker and the replacement procedure than over the years. previous years required to work with various adhesives “. Considering that the speaker must be removed for battery replacement, the new design is certainly welcome.

Compared to the L-shape design previously used for the battery, the new iPhones use a more traditional rectangular unit which should have allowed Apple to save on production costs. The Taptic Engine, or the advanced vibration motor, is the same between iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, while it is different than previous models (smaller and slightly thicker) . One of the novelties is MagSafe, the new hooking system of the rear body that makes use of 18 magnets reachable by disassembling all the components of the devices.

The repairability rating? iFixit assigns a score of 6 out of 10 , the same as the last generation. Two strong points: the replacement of the display and battery is facilitated by the design, chosen on purpose to make the procedure as simple as possible, and the modularity of many components that can be easily replaced. However, some historical problems remain: the use of proprietary screws and increased resistance to liquids can make repairs complicated, just as the use of double-sided glass adds the risk of breakage during operations.
