Hasselblad’s analog medium format cameras often ended up in the closet with the onset of digitization, too good to give away, too analog to continue working with them. Over time, the first digital backs came onto the market. Initially with two to eight megapixels, later with significantly more. Hasselblad itself developed the CFV series, of which there has been a back with 39 and one with 50 Megapixels were there.

The CFV II 50 C is the youngest member of this family. Together with the Hasselblad 907 X it forms a stand-alone camera system that works with the modern XCD lenses. But you can just as easily connect it to the older models, for example a 500 CM. The 50 megapixels are joined by modern camera technology, a new battery and two SD card storage spaces instead of the previous CF card slots.

Handling The Hasselblad combination 907 X and CFV II 50 C is really small and handy for a medium format camera, at least as long as no large optics are flanged on. If that is the case, it becomes top-heavy, heavy and difficult to hold. Then a stable tripod is required.

But here too, Hasselblad has thought along and developed a handle entirely in the retro style of the model, the 907 X 50 C control handle. It costs around 750 euros and is not only practical because it makes the camera easier to guide and use upright, but also because it offers both a joystick for selecting the focus points and other configurable control buttons. There are also connections for headphones, microphone, power and a synchronization cable underneath the display behind a rubber flap. The latter is important when you want to attach the back to an older V-model. The cable is connected between the back and the lens.

In portrait format it gets tricky. The touch screen on the back can be tilted up, but not to the side. You feel reminded of the shaft hunters of the old models. The display is usually very easy to read and reacts quickly and directly to typing. But reflections can be annoying in strong sunlight. In this case the shaft finder of the older models is an advantage, but it shows a 6×6 format. If you use the back with an old camera and shaft viewer, you develop a feeling for the cutout or install a passepartout. Optionally, the optical viewfinder X for around 500 Euro. Its meaning can be questioned, because it is only possible with the XCD lenses from 21 , 30 and 45 Millimeter focal length can be used. But at least it looks stylish.

Hasselblad 907 X 50 C (6 pictures) The Hasselblad 907 X 50 C is linked optically and technically to the analog Hasselblad system. The housing size and sensor are smaller, but the digital back is compatible with the V system, for example.

(Image: Hasselblad) The battery and the two memory card slots are on the side and can therefore be changed with a tripod during operation. A USB-C cable for transfer speeds to the PC of 5 Gbit / s can be connected on the opposite side of the housing.

The operation is classically reduced, there are only five small buttons below the Display. The rest is done almost entirely by touch. The lower left button is used to switch between two menus for recording and advanced settings. All important parameters can be defined in the recording menu. Exposure mode, ISO value, aperture, exposure time or exposure correction can be selected here with a fingertip. The exceptions are aperture and exposure time, which can also be changed using the dial directly on the shutter release. A small button on the right outside decides which of the two is active. The metering method, manual focus and white balance can be adjusted in the quick menu if necessary. Recording modes such as timer, series or exposure series can also be set there. The video settings can also be found in the extended menu. The Hasselblad can handle two formats: 2.7 K and Full HD.
