New iPad Pro with mini LED display apparently planned for spring 2021
Source: Hardware Luxx added 05th Nov 2020Rumors have been circulating for months that claim that Apple is working on a new iPad Pro with a mini LED display. A report by ETNews on South Korea is now giving this new impetus. LG is supposed to start producing the screens for Apple by the end of the year and the new iPad is to be launched in the first quarter 2021 .
A few weeks ago reports from DigiTimes already indicated that at least the coming 11, 9 “iPad Pro model on a backlight with over 10. 000 The main difference between a mini LED display and a conventional LCD screen is the backlighting. As the name suggests, the mini LED display has hundreds or thousands of zones in which the brightness can be individually adapted. This should be possible through particularly compact LEDs, the diameter of which is half that of conventional LEDs.
The advantages of the technology lie in an increased maximum brightness with lower power consumption at the same time. The not yet widely used display technology also promises better black levels and thus a higher contrast. However, the costs in production should be up to a third higher than with conventional LCDs. It remains to be seen whether Apple will equip all models of the iPad Pro with the new technology or just the big one, which in turn could get a premium.
If the new displays prove themselves, it doesn’t seem unlikely Apple will use the technology in other devices in the future. In the medium term there could also be iMac models and MacBooks that rely on mini LEDs.
