Today the official premiere of the first new generation consoles took place, i.e. the Xbox Series X and Series S. Next week, 19 November, PlayStation 5 will go on sale in Poland. Along with the disclosure of console prices, we also got to know the prices of games, which have been quite large and the first since 15 years of increase (from 60 to 70 US dollars). In our country, this translated into PLN 349 and it is supposed to be a new standard for high-budget games such as the remake of Demon’s Souls, NBA 2K 21, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War or Godfall. However, as reported by Bloomberg, Sony considered introducing an even higher threshold of suggested prices, but it was eventually abandoned. However, there are many companies who believe that their games are worth more than we pay for them.

Despite the pandemic and the related economic crisis, Sony has decided, together with some publishers, to raise prices for standard editions of PS5 games to 70 dollars (349 PLN). According to many companies, this increase should have happened a long time ago due to rising production costs and inflation. It could have been even worse – Sony was in talks to establish an even higher price threshold (no amount was given, but we suppose that even 80 was being considered. for AAA games). One of the companies that could have been in favor of a larger raise was probably Take-Two, whose president said that their games, such as GTA and Red Dead Redemption, should be more expensive (could GTA VI cost more than 349 PLN?). However, many executive directors found the move unpopular and were not necessarily in favor of the increases. Representatives of anonymous companies added that the prices are to be dependent on the titles, which means that only the most expensive games in production will be priced higher.

In fact, now for premium editions with various additions or seasonal passes (we are not even talking about collectors!) you have to pay much more than 70 dollars (349 PLN). For example, the suggested retail price of the Demon’s Souls remake in the Deluxe edition, which only includes a soundtrack and unique equipment, costs as much as PLN 429. Sony and other publishers, however, chose a poor time to introduce increases. Many players will probably wait for cuts or will look at the secondary market more often. Despite the changes, not all companies have followed in the footsteps of Sony or Activision. An example is Ubisoft, which (so far) has not increased the prices of its games for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, but this may change when it starts to release them only on next-generation consoles. Time will tell.
