The new SoC will support 5G bands and mmWave, and is expected to be implemented on high-level devices, even if lower-end than the top of the range with Snapdragon 888.

Qualcomm took the veils off the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform , a follow-up to the more powerful platform of the previous generation. Qualcomm defines it as the direct evolution of Snapdragon 865 Plus, resuming its configuration and bringing the maximum operating frequency of the core “prime” at 3.2 GHz (SD 865 Plus stopped at 3.1 GHz). The architecture remains the Kryo 585 that we saw on last generation chipsets.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 then puts on the plate: increased performance, support for Snapdragon Elite Gaming technologies and, above all, a 5G modem compatible with both the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands. And there is no lack of support for Artificial Intelligence.

“Designed on the success of Snapdragon 865 is 865 Plus, the new Snapdragon 870 was developed in response to the needs of manufacturers and the mobile industry ” , Qualcomm’s Kedar Kondap said. “The new processor will power a selection of flagship devices from manufacturers such as Motorola, iQOO , OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi “ .

We can define the new Snapdragon 870 as an overclocked version of the previous flagship, made with the same 7-nm production process. We therefore have eight cores with Kryo architecture 585 to 64 – bit, including the main at 3.2GHz and no longer at 3.1GHz as on 865 Plus, combined with a Adreno GPU 650 which on paper remains unchanged from that of its predecessor. The modem is also the same Snapdragon X 55 5G, with support for all bands and to standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA), FDD and TDD modes. The new platform is clearly compatible with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and supports video resolutions up to 4K at 60 Hz.

The first products with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G will be announced by Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi probably in the next few weeks, in the first quarter of 2021 .
