The sensor is also suitable for use with devices with a tilt display.

Qualcomm has unveiled a second-generation version of its under-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The sensor utilizes ultrasonic waves to form a three-dimensional map of the fingertip. The sensor works through a solid layer such as a screen, glass or metal. The sensor area is only 0.2 mm thick, so it is also suitable for use with flexible displays.

The area of the second generation sensor (8 x 8 mm) has been increased by as much 77% to make it smoother to use. Samsung phones that used the first-generation implementation received little criticism for the small size of the detection range. Detection is promised to work 50% faster as well as in sub-optimal conditions such as wet fingers. The sensor is also said to collect 1.7 times the data of the previous generation implementation

.According to Qualcomm, the first devices using the second-generation sensor will be seen right at the beginning of the year, so given history, it is very possible that the technology will be used in Samsung’s top models to be released on Thursday.Source: Qualcomm
