Sony confirms: PlayStation 5 will receive VRR support via software update
Source: Hardware Luxx added 24th Nov 2020Sony’s PlayStation 5 is now available worldwide. At the start, however, important functions are still missing, such as the option to expand the memory independently with an M.2 SSD or the lack of VRR support. The function would allow the console to match the frame rate of a television to that of the game. The Xbox Series X already offers this feature ex works.
In Sony’s extensive FAQ on the new PlayStation, the group promised to provide the function as soon as possible via a software update. It literally says: “PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR “. There is no exact time for the promise.
At the moment it can be assumed that the vast majority of PS5 games will support VRR. This is especially true for those that offer a 120 Hz mode. For example, DIRT 5, Destiny 2 and Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition could be mentioned here. What is not clear from the FAQ, however, is the question of whether the 32 Gbit / s limited HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is just a software problem or whether the Xbox will still have advantages in terms of VRR after an update from Sony’s part.
