The weekly c’t podcast c’t uplink is available …

Welcome to the year 2021! In the first episode of the new year we talk in c’t uplink about technology trends that will be important in the coming months. Christian Wölbert explains how tools for video conferencing and collaborative work could be improved so that colleagues in the home office can move closer together virtually. Maybe webcams will finally be available again at normal prices. It gets exciting 2021 in space (satellite internet), on the streets (IT in the car) and in warehouses (AI helps Robots gripping).

Because the cinemas are closed, Nico Jurran has opted for c’t “social viewing” functions for Watched streaming services. With Disney +, Amazon Prime and (via “Teleparty” browser plug-in) also with Netflix, you can now watch films and series from a distance without sitting in the same room. It’s fun, but there are also pitfalls: What if the film is interrupted every ten minutes because someone goes into the kitchen and presses the stop button? At Amazon, where up to 14 people can watch together, only the host can therefore influence the playback.

Finally, a Linux topic: Keywan Tonekaboni shows how easy it is to set up virtual machines under Linux. This is not only exciting for c’t editors, who have to constantly test new operating system versions: You can use it to build a clean development environment, try out beta functions for the desktop environment without blasting your desktop – and take a ride just quickly start up a Windows, if you need one or the other Windows program.
