Introduction

Founded in 2019 by several former Zowie employees, VAXEE is a peripherals company and shop platform. The NP-01S marks VAXEE’s second cooperation with Junya “noppo” Taniguchi and his brand ZYGEN. Whereas the ZYGEN lettering features prominently on the NP-01S (this time on the side, similarly to the Outset AX), the line “powered by VAXEE” is hidden on the back of the mouse, underlining that the NP-01S is the result of a joint creative process. For the sake of simplicity, I’ll nonetheless refer exclusively to VAXEE throughout the review.

The NP-01S retains the improvements first introduced with the Outset AX: Thicker feet, a refined scroll wheel, and a revised matte coating, which is more matte than the NP-01 coating. The biggest difference thus lies in the shape: Much like the NP-01, the NP-01S still blends ambidextrous and right-handed ergonomic design elements, with the top being reminiscent of the former, whereas the bottom is more alike the latter. However, the NP-01S has a more centered, lower-sitting hump, which results in the back interfering less with one’s palm. Additionally, the NP-01S is narrower, and the left-side back flare is less pronounced. Other than that, the NP-01S isn’t much different: PixArt’s PMW3389 sensor, Huano switches for the main buttons, a paracord-like, braided cable, and no RGB or software. Variants in matte black and glossy white are available exclusively through VAXEE’s own shop.
