On the occasion of Patch Tuesday in January 2021 Microsoft fixed a known issue that caused the “ Reset this PC”
function to fail in some cases , translated into Italian as “Reset PC” . The bug affected all versions of Windows 10 from 1607 to 1909, ed it was definitely fixed with the KB package 4598479 released last Tuesday.
The Reset PC function allows Windows users 10 to reinstall the operating system using a local recovery image or the latest version of Windows 10 available on Microsoft servers, keeping or not the local files present in the system. The user can then reset the PC starting from a completely clean installation, removing saved apps and settings, or just clean up the operating system and keep the rest of the system intact.
Microsoft fixes the bug that prevented the PC from being “reset”
The issue was introduced last year with the KB package 4524244 released during Patch Tuesday in February. Although the patch was designed to fix a problem on UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) that could have exposed UEFI-enabled computers to attack, it also caused the system reset function to malfunction, leading to a generic warning “ There was a problem resetting your PC “.
The package causing the error was the KB 4524244 , and had a short duration on Windows Update (about 4 days from release) due to the various negative reports released by users. At the time, whoever received the message should have uninstalled the package from the update history, while with the release of the KB 4598479 the problem has been permanently archived on all systems .
