Taking advantage of the delays of Faraday Future rivals and Byton, Xpeng could become the first start-up to launch a next-generation vehicle with LiDAR sensor on board

Xpeng announced the new version of its autonomous driving systems , with a very clear goal: to be the first car manufacturer to launch a new generation vehicle with LiDAR sensor on board. Using a laser pulse, Xpeng’s cars will be able to determine the distance of objects from the vehicle, recreating three-dimensional reproductions of the surrounding environments.

This can be very useful for technologies of autonomous driving, which will gain in precision and will continue to function even in the dark. Xpeng technology is able to reconstruct environments also in terms of people and animals , as well as inanimate objects and other vehicles . The news will come with the software update 2021.

Xpeng vehicles will be equipped with a full suite of hardware which includes, among other things, high definition video cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors . A total of 32 sensors , according to Xpeng’s plans, will guarantee the necessary redundancy to ensure the maximum possible precision in the reproduction of the environments. According to the Chinese carmaker (founded in 2014), in fact, this technology will make its cars “the most accurate in the world” in assisted driving. The amount of data captured by the devices is then analyzed by a computer integrated in the vehicle, equipped with the necessary computing capacity to manage so much data.

An autonomous driving system with these features, powered by LiDAR data, it would be precise enough to allow autonomous driving even in the most difficult environments, such as the very crowded urban centers of the metropolises modern. Xpeng is not the first carmaker to talk about LiDAR in its vehicles: they did too Faraday Future and Byton , but they are experiencing slowdowns in the development of their projects.
