Bundestag resolves tax breaks for freefunkers and home offices

With the majority of the government factions of the CDU / CSU and SPD, the Bundestag passed the government draft for the Annual Tax Act 2020 with numerous changes on Wednesday. This means that in future the charitable nature of initiatives for free radio, climate protection and local beautification can be recognized. The FDP voted against the initiative, the AfD, the Left and the Greens abstained.

For Freifunker it will be easier for the construction to raise money or donations in kind from open WLAN access points and issue confirmations for the tax office in return. The Bundestag had previously rejected proposals from the FDP, the Greens and the Bundesrat to classify the free hotspot operators as non-profit in principle. At the beginning 2019 the federal government had made its own attempt, but due to the debate about the non-profit status of Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and Attac and Campact, no progress was made. Tax relief for home office According to the coalition’s corrections, those who work in the home office are also allowed to expect tax breaks. According to the project, taxpayers can claim an amount of five euros for each calendar day on which they work exclusively in their home. The lump sum should be able to be claimed if the conditions for the deduction of costs for a home office are not met. The benefits are limited to a maximum amount of 600 euros per year and are only granted during the corona pandemic for 2020 and 2021 granted. The resulting reduced tax revenue should be 900 million euros.

EU-wide companies no longer have to be in each Member State individually meet their tax obligations. In the future, this can only be done in the company’s home country via a web portal, where VAT is settled centrally for all online sales. Tax fraud by traders from non-EU countries is to be combated more intensively. According to the draft, operators of online marketplaces are fictitiously integrated into the supply chain and thus made more responsible.

Praise and criticism In the final debate, the Social Democrat Lothar Binding spoke of a fair lump sum for teleworkers, which, after the two-year experiment in the Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) planned by the CDU / CSU Group but rejected claim to home office could result. Sebastian Brehm (CSU) emphasized that the considerable strain on workers at home was compensated for. This is a good signal for the digital world.

Kay Gottschalk (AfD) criticized the fact that the benefits for teleworkers are alms that still have to be offset against the advertising costs. Markus Herbrand (FDP) complained that the rules for the home office remained with the time limit halfway. If you have a lower income, you get nothing here, criticized the leftist Fabio De Masi. Lisa Paus complained for the Greens that black and red had not eliminated the massive legal uncertainty for civil society organizations in the case of non-profit status. Commitment to democracy, fundamental and human rights or social justice were left out as reasons for recognition.

TechStage | Smart home switches and buttons: Cleverly at the push of a button

Beginning Hue Switch Logi Pop Switch Friend of Hue Conclusion Comments by Matthias // 16. 12. 2020 17: 53 Clock

If you want to control light, music, heating and more in your smart home, you usually have to pull out your smartphone or use voice assistants. But a lot is also possible with smart switches.

Anyone who uses smart light from Philips Hue (adviser), Osram, Lifx and Co at home knows the problem: You have to pull out your smartphone to control it. This is cumbersome, as almost every system needs to be controlled via its own app. After all, many Zigbee solutions, for example from Müller-Licht (Aldi-Lame in the test) or Osram, integrate into the Hue app, even if sometimes not with all the features.

It gets a little more comfortable with voice assistants (in comparison). For example, Amazon’s Alexa and the Google Assistant bundle several devices from different manufacturers in routines. An “Alexa, good night” turns off the Hue lighting, the TV, the smart socket and the music if desired.

That is practical. But you don’t always want to talk to a machine, for example when you enter a room and want to switch on the smart light. Pretty much all of us are almost intuitively looking for a switch at this moment. There are also suitable solutions here. However, many manufacturers rely on isolated solutions, i.e. only support their own product. But there are also a few exceptions that bundle several non-company smart home products under one roof. In this purchase advice, which will be gradually expanded, we present a selection.

Hue Switch Philips sells two switches specially tailored to their Hue system: The Hue Dimmer Switch for 15 Euro and the Hue Smart Button for 25 Euro. Both systems connect via the Hue app with the Hue bridge or, according to the manufacturer, alternatively with a Zigbee-enabled Amazon Echo (test report). The connection with the Hue bridge worked for us straight away and without any noticeable problems.

Once integrated, the switches are assigned different behaviors. Up to five long and short keystrokes can trigger previously saved scenes or light recipes. This also works well in the Hue app. However, the switches are not compatible with Alexa. Alexa does not know whether the switch has been triggered. The switches cannot trigger Alexa routines or be integrated into such routines.

With regard to their hardware, the two switches differ significantly. The Hue Smart Button is based on minimalism. It measures around three centimeters in diameter on the top of which sits a single button that can be heard with a clear click. It is white and completely rubberized, and gives the impression that it doesn’t mind a bit of moisture and splashing water.

On the back of the Hue Smart Button is a small, but very strong magnet to make it stick to metal surfaces. Alternatively, Hue includes two adhesive mounts in the package. One of them is very small and almost invisible with the switch attached. The other is about the size of a classic wall switch with a small round recess in the middle for the smart button. Press once to switch on the first light scene. After a short pause, pressing it again switches the light off. To dim, the buyer holds the button down. It works well and smoothly. We particularly like the high-quality workmanship and the inconspicuous design. If desired, it can be stuck under the coffee table, for example, in order to control the lighting inconspicuously from the couch.

The Hue Dimmer Switch with its dimensions of 9 × 3.5 centimeters is a whole corner bigger and looks a lot more like a light switch. There are four clearly labeled buttons on its front: on, off, brighter and darker. The one-button switches reliably through the previously learned light recipes when pressed several times.

The Hue dimmer switch also understands, for example, the (Schwieger -) Parents who have never come into contact with Smart Home, immediately. Especially when it is in the light switch-shaped holder. The dimmer switch is magnetically held in it, so it can also be removed and operated from the couch. Unfortunately, unlike in the Hue Smart Button, the magnet is located in the holder and not on a switch, so that it can be attached directly to metal surfaces. We do not find any information about the battery life for any of the devices. However, we assume that a button cell can easily last a year.

Logi Pop Switch The smart Pop switches from Logi, or Logitech, are a discontinued model, but can currently still be bought. We find the end of the product without an adequate successor to be extremely unfortunate. Because they combine several services such as Hue, Sonos, Fritzbox, Lifx, Osram, IFTTT, WeMo, Smart Things, Osram and a handful of lesser-known ones.

We have been using the Hue Pop every day for about five years and are very satisfied with it. The processing quality of the square buttons with an edge length of around six centimeters is high. They are rubberized, water-repellent and show no signs of use in the form of resistant dirt or the like, even after years of use. They also still run on the first pair of button cells.

Logi Pop Switch (5 pictures) Logi Pop

Once set up via the app, the Logi Pop communicate with the bridge via Bluetooth LE. Thankfully, this is not plugged directly into the router, but directly into a socket and broadcasts to it via WLAN. The app can now be used to select the right one from the fourteen compatible services. Logi then searches for corresponding devices in the home WLAN.

We particularly like the self-explanatory one Programming the switches. You differentiate between a single, a double and a long button press, to which the devices are assigned very simply by drag’n’drop.

However, at least in our setup we miss the possibility to integrate devices from Nanoleaf. Even if Logitech is a big company with a good reputation, nobody really knows if and when Logitech will shut down the servers for their Logi-Pop switches. Then the end of the smart switch control. Alternatively, there are the Flic-2 buttons, which also combine several services. We’ll take a closer look at this solution later for an update of this post.

The Logi Pop switches cost as a starter set with two switches and the bridge 110 Euro. Each additional switch costs from 30 Euro.

Friend of Hue There are a number of manufacturers who work in close cooperation with Offer Philips switches for their system. We looked at the Busch-Jaeger Smart Switch and the TCS socket outlet. Both can be easily integrated directly into the Hue app and programmed in a similar way to the Hue switches.

Busch-Jaeger Smart Swicht and TCS stash socket (01 Pictures) Busch-Jaeger Smart Switch

The Busch-Jaeger Smart Switch is either glued on or screwed on at the installation site. Their appearance can hardly be distinguished from a classic light switch. It consists of two parts, each reminiscent of a toggle switch, but basically each two buttons. The special thing about it: You can do without a battery. The Busch-Jaeger Smart Switch gains the voltage required for data transmission via Zigbee by pressing the switch itself. To do this, you actually have to press it a little harder, but that doesn’t matter. On the contrary, it gives very valuable haptic feedback.

The TCS stash socket is coming with a special trick. It replaces a classic socket with a new one, over which the switch can be fitted with a sliding mechanism. A slight pressure directly from above on the switch unit, the switch moves gently upwards and exposes the socket. Just as easily you push it down again and hide the socket. This can be useful in the bathroom, for example, if you want to protect the open ports of the socket from splashing water. To protect children, the movable storage can also be locked magnetically. For this you need an additional magnetic key. It remains to be seen whether this gimmick is really needed. It is always a chic design element.

Conclusion There are many switches. Especially with regard to their processing, we like all of the things discussed here. The Hue Smart Switch is particularly discreet, the Busch-Jaeger Smart Switch is confusingly similar to a normal light switch. The TCS socket outlet is clever, as it hides a socket outlet with a sliding mechanism. But these solutions only work in the Hue cosmos. For example, we would have liked an Alexa switch that starts and stops routines at the push of a button. Something like that once existed with the Echo Buttons, which have now been removed from the range. Most likely, Logi Pop still unites different manufacturers. But this is also a discontinued product.

There are some alternatives. For the next update we’re looking at cheap WiFi and Zigbee switches from China. Also the Fritzdect 110 for Fritz solutions, the Osram Smart + Switch and the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Switch. We are particularly excited about the Flic 2, as it combines several solutions from different manufacturers in one switch.

Smart thermostats can also be controlled using a switch. If you want to heat smartly, you should take our comparison test 2020: The best Read through n smart radiator thermostats.

The network cable accelerates the home network the most, despite many alternatives. We show that cabling does not have to be complicated or expensive.

Basic knowledge of home network cabling: from emergency solution to professional Components & Tools Allocation Compromises Telephone cables & Co. Article in c’t 26/2020 read If your level of frustration is ma l climbs again because the film does not load, the copying process to the network storage is paralyzed, the video call mainly consists of block artifacts and the radio live stream constantly stalls, this is often not due to the sluggish internet connection, but rather to the local WLAN. The rapid development of the last 20 years has meant that not only is more bandwidth required, but more and more devices are occupying the WLAN radio spectrum at 2.4 and 5 GHz.

The solution: Wherever high bandwidth is required, the data has to be transported from the air to the wired home network (LAN) as quickly as possible, for example through cleverly positioned WLAN access points . Many repeaters with a LAN connection also offer an access point mode and can therefore be set to a different channel, increasing the overall capacity of your WLAN. Stationary devices are best connected to the LAN by cable.

But who Now think about pushing finished cables with plugs through oversized holes in the wall or laboriously pulling them through cable ducts – both nasty things that can make any network technician howl and damage the plugs while laying them – should take a moment for another moment take the basics. Sensible home network cabling is not rocket science, there are many options and with a little effort you can save yourself trouble and electricity costs for decades.

polaroid-now-instant-camera-in-the-test:-classic-offshoot-with-double-exposure

Polaroid Now instant camera in the test: Classic offshoot with double exposure

The haptics are brand plastic bomber, the ergonomics a disaster. But, there is no other way to write it: The Polaroid Now is simply beautiful. One likes to be photographed with a camera like this, so it doesn’t really matter what the result looks like in the end. The Polaroid Now is a current instant camera, its optical model is found in the Polaroid OneStep from 1977 – including rainbow colors.

The Polaroid Now is very colorful. Our test model was red; blue, yellow, green, black or all white variants are also available. The recommended retail price of the camera itself is 80 Euro , but you can find them cheaper. In a bundle with 2 film cassettes there is the Now for about 140 Euro.

The Now is a model that is particularly easy to use, similar to the Fujifilm Instax SQ1. It does not have Bluetooth or WLAN, which is why it is not like its sister OneStep + from the year 2018 can be paired with the smartphone.

The technical data are quickly defined: The scarce 450 Gram heavy camera works with Polaroid i-Type or 600-Film. These have the typical square Polaroid format with an image area of almost eight by eight centimeters. There are eight recordings in a film cassette. The prices per photo fluctuate a lot, depending on which version and package size you choose: with a classic white frame, with a camouflage frame, blue frame, golden frame, for black and white pictures, with wrong colors … , 60 you have to calculate at least one euro . The slightly smaller Instax Square films from Fujifilm cost around one euro per picture.

Auto-fix focus The Polaroid Now has an integrated lithium-ion battery that is charged via micro USB. Polaroid supplies the right cable, but a power plug is not included. If in doubt, you have to borrow it from your smartphone. And since many current models already work with USB-C connectors, the connector archive is the right place to go. The Now shows the charge level via a small LED above the USB port.

The Polaroid Now is charged via USB.

The objective System consists of polycarbonate and acrylic glass lenses and offers two focal lengths, each with different fixed focus zones. The fixed aperture is f / . For close range – for example for portraits – the Polaroid Now uses 35 mm, everything from 50 centimeters to about 1.3 meters. This is a relatively large distance from the subject, which restricts the composition of the picture, as you always capture a comparatively large amount of accessories. Cameras like the Fujifilm SQ1 get closer here and have a close range (in selfie mode) with a focus range of 30 to 50 centimeters. By default, the Polaroid Now works with a 30 – Millimeter focal length and a focus range of 0.6 meters to infinity.

Polaroid says that the Now has an autofocus. What is meant, however, is that the camera itself decides when to work with which focal length (and which focus area). Photographers cannot influence this in any way. And that is a major weak point in the camera. To make matters worse, the camera does not show its focal length decision anywhere and you can only hear the change with a short click. If you want to consciously provoke this change, you can press the shutter button halfway and experiment with the distance to the subject – and just listen.

Fiddly manual In fact, the system worked fine in most cases. Not always, however. And when you consider what each individual picture costs, every missed shot hurts. But not only the “autofocus” stands in the way, the Polaroid Now is a fine weather camera that needs a lot, a lot, a lot of light to take good pictures. Therefore, by default, she takes photos with flash. And it is not exactly of the “fine spirit” type, which is why you often just flash your motifs “dead” in the standard area. The typical instant photo look. It burns a little less at close range. Here, however, flashed images sometimes get too dark if there is backlighting.

On switch, flash button, status display – the operating elements of the Now are straightforward.

Completely delivered But you are not: The standard flash can be switched off with a button on the back if you have made sure that the light is otherwise correct. If you press the flash button for about a second, you also activate a mini exposure compensation. The service is tricky and requires the greatest attention. In the small round display, in which the recordings usually count down, then appears a narrow line that can be shifted up and down with short tips on the flash button – from -1/2 EV to +1/2 EV. If the correction has been set successfully, the circular display alternately shows the number of films and the EV settings. Well, you can’t work miracles with it, but you can get closer to a balanced exposure and a somewhat more natural impression.

Immediately does not mean immediately The self-timer button (9 seconds) also has a double function. If you press it twice in quick succession, you start a double exposure. The mini-display on the back then flashes to indicate that it can start and after the second exposure the camera spits out the image.

Then it doesn’t matter whether you wave like crazy or the instant picture patiently stares at. It takes about ten minutes until the photo is ready, and after about 5 minutes you can at least roughly assess whether the shot went wrong or not. Immediately is relative.

Polaroid Now: Sample images (8 images) As long as they don’t move too fast, pets are a great motive for instant photography, if it weren’t for flash. This cat does everything right, she sits still and does not look at the camera.

Conclusion and alternatives The Polaroid Now is an instant camera with a good mood design. It is easy to use, but not necessarily intuitive. A quick look at the manual does not hurt. The setting options are somewhat more complex than, for example, with an Instax SQ1, so the double exposure function invites you to be creative. And that’s also easy on the wallet, because you get two exposures on one photo. With about 1, 60 Euro the single images are not a bargain, if you want to use bright frame colors or special editions, you have to dig deeper into your pocket. Alternatives are plentiful on the market, both from Polaroid and Fujifilm. If you are looking for something more unusual, look at Lomography.

Are a possible alternative also mini photo printer like the Canon Selphy Square QX 10. For example, it prints pictures from a smartphone in a Polaroid design with a white frame. Here the costs per print are around 80 Cent and significantly higher image quality. In addition, you can design the pictures more freely, make collages, insert writing, add filters – last but not least, every picture is also a sticker.

techstage-|-good-e-book-reader-for-vacation,-vacation-and-lockdown

TechStage | Good e-book reader for vacation, vacation and lockdown

Beginning Display Audiobooks Ecosystem Load e-books Impermeability Protective cover Security Price Conclusion Comments (13) by Matthias // 15. 12. 2020 14: 23 Clock

E-book readers are not only a perfect way to read books digitally on vacation, but also for the holiday season and in lockdown. A which e-reader is on the right one?

They are light, compact, offer a long battery life and space for more books than you can carry: These points apply to almost all current e-book readers. But there are also features that make some e-book reader models better suited than others for use on vacation and during lockdown. This purchase advice shows what these are and what you should generally pay attention to when using an e-reader. We also recommend our comparison test e-reader: Tolino vs Paperwhite vs Pocketbook.

We have already tested the following e-readers individually:

Amazon Kindle 2019 (test report) Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (test report) Amazon Kindle Oasis 2019 (test report) Tolino Shine 3 (test report) Pocketbook Touch HD 3 (test report) Pocketbook Color (test report) Display The e-ink display is the great strength of the e-book reader. Because, on the one hand, it can be read very well even in direct sunlight. On the other hand, it only requires energy when changing the display, which leads to a very long battery life.

When choosing the device with mostly 6 inches (approx. 15 cm) large screen, we recommend a resolution of at least 1448 × 1072 pixels as offered by most mid-range e-readers. When it is good in itself and with 70 Euro also very cheap Amazon Kindle 2019 (test report) the font is frayed due to the low resolution of 800 × 600 pixels. We find that annoying. However, there are users who see it differently.

With the Pocketbook Color (test report ) there is an e-reader with a color display. Its screen consists of a classic e-ink carta layer with a display depth of 16 Grayscale and a resolution of 300 ppi. Above that lies the semi-transparent CFA (Color Filter Array) layer, which 4096 colors, but only a resolution of 100 ppi offers. E-Ink calls the combination of the two layers Kaleido.

The interplay of high-resolution grayscale display and low-resolution color display achieves results that are sharper in practice act as it is the 100 ppi of the color layer suggest. Especially with pure black text on a light background, there is hardly any difference in sharpness compared to models with the tried and tested e-ink carta display. The sharpness is comparable to the premium model Kindle Oasis 2019 (test report) and much better than the Kindle 2019.

In comics, the Colors are best, as they often come across as rather oversaturated. The E-Ink-Kaleido depicts graphics well, even if colored edges often look frayed. The quality of photos drops. They are often restless with unclean color gradients. Nevertheless, the color representation on an e-book reader is a blessing.

The colors appear strongest in direct sunlight. We rate backlighting as very important. It makes reading on the balcony much more comfortable in the evening than when a light has to be switched on. The partner who may already be sleeping next to one in bed will appreciate the fact that no additional light has to be switched on. Meanwhile, some e-book readers offer different color temperatures for the lighting – cool blue light should help you concentrate, warm white light should relax.

The Amazon Kindle 2019 (test report) for 70 Euro is the cheapest e-reader with backlight. The Tolino Shine 2 HD and the Pocketbook Basic Lux 2 are each with about 85 Euro not much more expensive.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite vs Tolino Shine 3 vs Pocketbook Touch HD 3 (7 images) Audiobooks More and more e-book readers also support audio books. It should be noted here that on the one hand audio books need a lot of memory, on the other hand the e-readers usually do not have their own loudspeaker and control headphones via Bluetooth. We recommend our test winners: These headphones are the best in their class and The best Bluetooth speakers up to 100 Euro.

Again is the Amazon Kindle 2019 (test report) for 70 Euro the cheapest e-book reader with this feature. Even the second cheapest e-reader with Bluetooth comes with the Kindle Paperwhite from Amazon and costs at least 120 Euro. The Pocketbook Touch HD 3 (test report) costs just under 123 Euro.

Ecosystem Anyone who has a Kindle Buying an e-reader, opts for Amazon and against DRM-protected books from other booksellers at the same time. Amazon offers a well-functioning ecosystem with a very large selection of books. Especially in the area of indie books, the diversity is unparalleled. In terms of price, it makes no difference anyway, since e-books are also subject to fixed book prices and cost the same at all retailers.

However, taking the purchased e-books to an alternative e-reader is included Effort involved. The files must be downloaded from the Kindle library and converted into a free format using the free program Caliber, for example, before they can be read by other e-readers. Attention: This is only legal for copy protection-free e-books.

Kindle Paperwhite 1448: The complete facility in pictures (25 Pictures) The Tolino and Pocketbook e-book readers usually have shops pre-installed, but these can be changed without much effort. All three of them have synchronized smartphone and tablet apps.

Amazon offers a flat rate – Offers that can be worthwhile for frequent readers. For scarce 10 Euro per month there is a monthly audio book of your choice and countless podcasts. Also 10 Amazon wants Euro per month for Kindle Unlimited. There are over 1.5 million books available here, most of which are indie books. There are only a few novels from large publishers.

On the other hand, the e-readers from Pocketbook and Tolino support the online loan offer of the German libraries. Many well-known works are represented here. However, if you want to borrow them, you often have to expect waiting times.

Load e-books If you use the e-book at home in the WLAN, you have no problems downloading e-books. When on vacation you have to log into public WLANs or WLANs in hotels or restaurants. In addition to capacity and range problems with hotel WLANs, the network technology usually differs greatly from private WLANs; The login does not always work. In an emergency, the smartphone’s WiFi hotspot can help. This can lead to additional fees abroad, depending on the roaming tariff, even if e-books are usually small files.

Alternatively, the Amazon Kindle devices offer a cellular option with which e-books can find their way to the reader regardless of location. Apart from a one-time surcharge when purchasing, there are no additional costs for the buyer. Prerequisite: There is a stable cellular connection at the place of use. There are currently two models with an integrated cellular module. The A mazon Kindle Oasis costs with 25 GByte memory regular 260 Euro, for an extra charge of 60 There are euros 3G in addition. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (test report) costs with 23 GByte and without advertising 150 Euro, for also 60 Euro more, Amazon integrates a 4G module.

Kindle Paperwhite 2018 (17 Pictures) Waterproof igkeit Not only for use on the beach should the E-book readers must be protected against the ingress of water. At home, too, it makes sense to take the e-reader with you into the bathtub. In the meantime, IP-certified dust and water resistance is already around the 100 euros to be found. The currently cheapest waterproof e-book reader is the Tolino Vision 2 for 85 Euro, directly followed by the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (test report) for 110 Euro and the Tolino Vision 3 HD for 123 Euro. The cheapest e-reader with water protection outside of Amazon and Tolino is the Pocketbook Touch HD 3 (test report) for 145 Euro.

Despite IP certification you shouldn’t take these devices into the water. Because the water resistance was tested under laboratory conditions with distilled water. They are just as unsafe against salty sea water as they are against chlorinated pool water or soapy bathtub water. A short immersion should not be a problem after cleaning with clean water.

Pocketbook Touch HD 3 pictures (11 Pictures) Protective cover An e-book reader has to endure a lot. It is squeezed into a suitcase, flies around in a backpack or, in extreme cases, has to endure the forces between the chair and the bottom in the back pocket of the jeans. But even at home it should survive falls on the parquet.

So that the sensitive display not scratched or broken, it should be protected. In most cases, a flip cover helps that enclose the screen, the back and the frame when closed. There are cases for almost all digital reading devices from around 10 Euro.

Security If you don’t want children to play around with your own e-book, for example, you should use one Protect password or numeric code. It works just as easily as with a smartphone. This works in slight variations for all readers with the latest firmware from the three big brands Kindle, Tolino and Pocketbook.

Tolino Shine 3 pictures (7 pictures) Price Conclusion All those who like to read and are not emotionally attached to paper and printer’s ink are warmly recommended to use an e-book reader. Countless books fit on the digital reading devices and at the same time also fit in the smallest drawer.

We recommend using a mid-range model. It shouldn’t be too expensive so it doesn’t hurt a lot in the event of damage. At the same time, depending on the type of use, it should support some important functions: If you use it in the bathtub, you need water resistance. If you want to read in the twilight, you need backlighting. If you don’t want to be tied to Amazon, you should avoid Kindles.

In the Amazon ecosystem we recommend the Kindle Paperwhite (test report) for 110 Euro. The Amazon Kindle 2019 (test report) is with 069 Euro significantly cheaper and offers a lot, but has a low-resolution display and is not waterproof. The Kindle Oasis 2018 (review) is a fantastic e-reader. With 230 to 320 Euro but clearly too expensive.

There are also good e-readers outside of Amazon. But here you usually have to add a few euros. The Pocketbook Touch HD 3 (test report) offers just under 150 Euro a good overall package. Comparable in price and also good: the Tolino Vision 5. If you like to read comics, you should take a closer look at the Pocketbook Color (test report). In addition to its color display, it offers many premium features and costs with 170 Euro too not much more than comparable e-readers with monochrome displays.

heise + | Fast WLAN: This brings Wi-Fi 6 to iPhone, iPad and Mac

The wireless network should be up to four times faster. But what is left of it in practice on Apple devices and what are the requirements?

(Image: stock.adobe.com, LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS; Montage: Mac & i)

Fast WLAN: This brings Wi-Fi 6 to iPhone, iPad and Mac Transfer more data Better to radio in parallel Some with neighbors Save energy Continue to transmit Combine several networks Check data paths What can be expected? Available hardware and Apple devices with Wi-Fi 6 in the test Item in Mac & i 6 / 2020 read WLAN has become indispensable, because most Apple devices do not have Ethernet sockets, but only go to the Internet wirelessly. In addition, there are more and more household devices such as televisions, radios and smart home devices that use WiFi. However, if you live in an apartment building in the city with many radio cells in the neighborhood, the bandwidth for video streaming or video telephony is sometimes no longer sufficient because the base stations have to constantly wait for each other. The new Wi-Fi 6 standard aims to address these problems. On the one hand, it should make WLAN faster and, thanks to new technologies, more efficient.

Instead of the new standard, IEEE 802. 11 ax, the Wi-Fi alliance has decided to name it Wi-Fi 6. In Germany it is sometimes called WLAN 6. At the same time, retrospectively 802. 11 ac in Wi-Fi 5 and 802. 11 n renamed to Wi-Fi 4.

Transfer more data Wi- Fi 6 initially increases the maximum gross data rate by just under 40 percent, through a higher modulation level (more on this in a moment). The correct tire pressure plays an important role. It’s easy to check at home. TechStage shows cheap and expensive devices for this.

When motorcycle manufacturers develop new models, they use a complex process to determine the optimal tire pressure. The recommended values for the front and rear tires should be strictly adhered to, this is the only way to keep the motorcycle manageable, regardless of whether it is accelerating, braking, banking, or at top speed. The contact area of a motorcycle tire on the road is just the size of a hen’s egg, it has to absorb enormous forces and interlock reliably with the asphalt surface – but it can only do that with the correct tire inflation pressure. If you drive with the wrong air pressure, you endanger yourself and others, because in extreme cases you can fall. But even just a little too low tire pressure leads to higher fuel consumption and causes the rubber to wear out faster. In addition, handling deteriorates and the braking distance becomes longer.

An air pressure check should take place at least every two weeks, preferably even before each trip. Measurements are generally taken when the tire is cold, because the air pressure increases in the warm tire. Air pressure gauges at petrol stations are often imprecise and therefore only help to a limited extent. It is much better to either have a good test device at home or permanent electronic monitoring on the motorcycle. The advantage of a separate test device is that it can be used for all other vehicles with an auto valve. In addition to the bike, the car, caravan or mountain bike always have the correct air pressure.

The article appears in our motorcycle theme world. There we already presented communication devices for bikes (advice), motorcycle sat navs like the Garmin Zumo XT (test report) or cheaper alternatives like the TomTom Rider 550 (Review) tested. We also provide ten gift tips for motorcyclists (articles).

Oxford Air Gauge The Oxford Air Gauge works in his black plastic housing is not exactly high quality, but delivers good results. It determines the air pressure with only minimal deviations and that is ultimately the main criterion. The right angle of the connection is also pleasant, so that you can easily reach the valve between the spokes of the rim. However, the Oxford Air Gauge gets stuck on some wheels when you pull it off the valve, so that some air escapes and you have to pump air again if in doubt. The measuring range extends to 10, 0 bar and can be switched to PSI. The digital display is unfortunately not illuminated, but it is easy to read in normal lighting conditions. When the measurement is finished, it switches itself off after a few seconds, so that the battery is conserved.

The Oxford Air Gauge is a solid and inexpensive air pressure gauge. Not for upscale professional demands, but proof that inexpensive devices can deliver good results.

SKS air pressure meter Also in a plastic case, but purely optically more valuable than the Oxford Air Gauge is the air pressure meter from SKS Germany. It lies well in the hand and only weighs 54 grams. The head can be rotated, which makes it much easier to put on the valve and it offers inputs for both motorcycle / car valves and for Presta valves on bicycles. The measurement is accurate, rarely the deviation is more than 0, 05 bar. The background of the digital display is illuminated and makes it easier to read. A practical button is used to deflate the air if too much has been pumped into the tire, the display is in real time. The unit of measurement goes up to 10, 0 bar and can be switched to PSI. The battery charge level is shown as a symbol and the digital display switches itself off after a while.

The SKS air pressure meter is comparatively cheap, offers good equipment and sufficiently accurate measurement results.

Topeak Smart Gauge D2 The Topeak Smart Gauge D2 is a real hand flatterer. The compact device impresses with its good equipment. The head is over 180 degrees, so that it can easily reach the valve between the spokes. The user switches between the valve sizes (motorcycle or bicycle) with a slide, and another button is used to deflate. The Smart Gauge D2 measures very precisely, and the large display is easy to read. It can be up to 17, measure 0 bar , even if this pressure would blow every motorcycle tire. The buttons for operating the menu are a bit small, but still acceptable to use. The pressure can optionally be shown in bar, PSI and in kg / cm2. An acoustic signal sounds when the measurement is completed.

The Topeak Smart Gauge D2 knows how to please with precise measurements and good features. Thanks to its compact dimensions of 07, 2 x 4.5 x 3.5 millimeters, it fits in almost every jacket pocket and can be carried on the tour.

Autmor TPMS tire pressure monitoring system The Autmor TPMS tire pressure control system differs from the other measuring devices shown so far. It consists of valve caps that are screwed on and then permanently transmit tire pressure and temperature to the receiver. The temperature measurement turns out to be inaccurate and usually shows too little. To do this, the pressure readings are precisely transmitted to the illuminated display. This can be attached to the handlebars or in the cockpit. It permanently shows the data from the front and rear tires in real time. The tire pressure monitoring system switches on as soon as the tire rotates, but it takes a few seconds before the current value is displayed. If the pressure or temperature deviates from the preselected value, the control system triggers an alarm. The units of measurement can be switched between degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit as well as bar and PSI. The housing of the display is waterproof and is either glued or screwed to the motorcycle, but the supposedly theft-proof screw turns out to be a normal lock nut. The manufacturer promises a battery life of at least two years.

The Autmor TPMS tire pressure control system shows the air pressure of both tires while driving. The temperature information is more a guide than an exact value.

Michelin tire pressure control system Tire giant Michelin delivers an alternative to the automobile -System. The tire pressure control system for motorcycles transmits the data to the round display, which is located with a bracket on the handlebar, in the cockpit or can be attached to the cladding. Unfortunately, the magnet and adhesive tape are not particularly strong, so the bracket should be as horizontal as possible. The information for both tires in the easy-to-read display is precise with only minor deviations. The Michelin system works with the so-called SAS system, which automatically performs the calibration and radio connection between the sensor and the display. Unfortunately, the small batteries in the pressure sensors cannot be replaced, but they are supposed to last for at least three years. The individual sensors can be bought later, they cost around 24 Euro the Piece.

The Michelin tire pressure monitoring system is a very practical system that gives the driver permanent security about the air pressure in the tires.

Bosch Easy Pump battery Who not only measure, but if necessary immediately still want to inflate, you should take a look at the Bosch Easy Pump battery. The device not only measures the pressure in the tire very accurately, it is also a compressor. Thanks to an integrated battery, it can hold up to 10, pump 3 bar into the tire. The flexible hose is 20 Centimeters long and can be easily connect to the motorcycle valve. The user can preselect the desired pressure in the digital and illuminated display and the Easy Pump battery switches off automatically when the pressure is reached. The battery is charged practically via USB-C. In addition, there are various adapters for bicycle, ball and air mattress valves in the handle. Due to its length of 215 millimeters and its weight of 423 Gram, it is rather unsuitable for motorcycle tours, but performs very well in the home garage, in the trunk or in the caravan.

With Easy Pump, Bosch offers a fascinating little battery pump with an accurate pressure display. If you want to make your life much easier, you can hardly avoid the Easy Pump.

Osram Tyreinflate 450 An alternative to the Bosch device comes from Osram. The Osram Tyreinflate 450 can be accessed via a 12 – Operate the volt charging socket and inflate tires in a short time. The digital display not only shows the current tire pressure, but the desired value can also be preselected there. A bar display provides information about the increasing pressure in the tire. The Osram Tyreinflate 450 has an automatic stop function as soon as the value is reached and can pump up to 5.5 bar pressure. The 65 Centimeter long, flexible hose reaches every motorcycle valve that 330 Centimeter long power cable is neatly wound up in the housing. Valve adapters for motorcycle / car, bicycle and balls are included.

Osram offers here with the Tyreinflate 423 a compact and practical device to check the tire pressure and at the push of a button to correct.

Conclusion Motorcyclists know how vital the correct air pressure is. It helps if you don’t have to rely on the devices at petrol stations, but have one that you can use and that always shows the same information. The wireless measuring systems are also a practical aid, as they automatically display the important information in the cockpit.

If you have more space, you should also use the Bosch Easy Pump or the Osram Tyreinflate 450 invest. Then you not only have a precise check of the pressure, but can also inflate on site if necessary. The fact that the devices also inflate bicycles, balls or air mattresses is a nice bonus that makes them perfect for a trip to the lake or as a companion in the caravan. We show alternatives to the two pumps in the article Mobile electric air pumps from Xiaomi & Co. in comparison.
