The 2020 was a really busy year for Canon, which unveiled after a few months the new reflex flagship and a couple of important mirrorless cameras, including the highly anticipated EOS R5 .
From a technical point of view, the elements of interest are not lacking : new sensor from 45 Mpixel and, despite the resolution, a lot, a lot of speed (up to 20 fps with electronic shutter), a state-of-the-art autofocus system , a range of sensitivity up to 51. 200 Native ISOs, one in-camera stabilizer accredited by well 8 stops and the video part, which includes, among other things, the internal video recording 8K RAW @ 30 p ?? something new in this form factor and price range.
The Canon EOS R5 therefore moves the bar a little higher in the high-performance big megapixel category , born with the Nikon D SLR 850 and now quite large : Nikon itself produced the mirrorless twin Z7, Sony now has two models, namely A7R Mark III and IV, and then there is Panasonic with its S1R. All are considered direct competitors of the EOS R5. All, however, stop at most at 10 fps, while to arrive at 20 fps you have to settle for a half resolution, as in the case of the Sony A9 II from 24 Mpixel ??
As with the EOS R6, we still believe that the Canon EOS R5 is not only in competition with the aforementioned cameras of other brands, but also, perhaps above all, with the EOS SLRs. It must in fact demonstrate that the EOS R mirrorless cameras can be valid alternatives to mirror models in every respect , even in the semi-professional and professional segment.

In this case, the R5 cannot fail to be compared with the 5Ds, although (even for a trivial personal data issue) it has several points in common with the newer 5D Mark IV. On paper, the comparison seems merciless for SLRs, but in the recent past we have sometimes found ourselves preferring the mirror solution despite the specs. Will the R5 definitely convince us?
The Canon EOS R5 is available from end of July at the list price of 4709 Euro for the body only , a figure that makes it by far the most expensive of the group with which it compares ?? the second-most expensive Sony A7R IV stops at 4000 Euro (price unchanged since launch day). The 5Ds SLR, at the time of launch, touched the 4000 Euro only with the more expensive R version.
The test was performed with the RF objectives 50 mm F1.2L USM (2629 Euro) and RF 100 – 500 mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM (3320 Euro) . Resolution measurements refer to RF 50 mm F1.2L USM.
