5G is moving into the lower middle class – at least in the Realme 7 5G. Another highlight is a 120 – Hz display and a modern, powerful chipset. Sounds good – is it good?

After Realme 7 (test report) and Realme 7 Pro (test report), the Chinese manufacturer has now also brought the Realme 7 5G to German retailers. Highlights are not only the eponymous 5G, but also a display with 120 Hertz and a chipset that has never been seen in this country, the Mediatek Dimensity 800 U. Realme offers all of this at an amazingly low price of 229 Euro in the RRP – is that enough to differentiate yourself from the other Realme 7 models?

Design That doesn’t work with the design. The Realme 7 5G looks exactly like the Realme 7 (test report) and is based on the simple 7 model in terms of size. The difference is not great in this regard, the Pro model offers 6.4 instead of 6.5 inches and corresponding dimensions. You can only see the low price of the model at the front in the thickness of the screen bezels; more expensive models do that better, especially below the display. Thanks to the punchhole notch, the device still looks sufficiently modern.

The processing is overall neat, even if only plastic is used as the material. In this price range, this can still be tolerated, even if individual manufacturers already rely on metal frames or glass backs. The Realme 7 5G is very comfortable to hold in the hand, but quickly reveals itself to be a “plastic bomber”. This can have advantages in terms of durability and reception, but it looks less high-quality. As a protective measure, Realme installs a display protective film on the screen ex works.

Realme uses the same matt surface for the 5g model on the back its dichotomy and the slightly iridescent color scheme like the Realme 7 Pro. This also applies to the arrangement of the cameras – the lenses are not just below each other, but also next to each other. Overall, the device appears to be of high quality for the price.

All pictures for Realme 7 5G from the test (9 pictures) Display The IPS LCD of the Realme 7 5G has a diagonal of 6.5 inches and is thanks to 2400 × 1080 Pixel nice and sharp (405 ppi). The highlight is the refresh rate of 120 Hertz – that’s one more time 30 Hertz more than the cheaper Realme 7 (test report) and even 60 Hertz more than the more expensive Realme 7 Pro (test report). There, however, buyers get OLED technology. Especially for 60 – Hz panel of the Pro model you can see a clear difference. Anyone who uses a higher Hertz number over a longer period of time no longer wants to do without the more fluid display of moving content.

OLED or LCD is often a question of faith, but the test device’s display is bad by no means. The brightness ranges with around 430 cd / m2 in everyday life, it can only be more difficult to read in direct sunlight. Otherwise, the panel scores with decent contrasts and largely natural color rendering. The viewing angle stability is also perfectly acceptable for the price we have called.

Camera Not only externally there are similarities the other Realme 7 models, the Realme 7 5G also uses the same camera equipment. This comes unchanged from the Realme 7 and is again made up of the main camera with 48 Megapixels, wide angle with 8 megapixels as well Macro and depth sensor with 2 megapixels each together. What we criticized in the test of the Realme 7 (review) also applies to the 5G model: Thanks to pixel binning, they are usually 12 instead of 48 Megapixel pictures the main camera are fine in good light. The biggest problems here are too much re-sharpening of the software with the resulting image noise and sufficient, but not good image dynamics.

The quad camera is actually a dual cam We already noticed the quality of the recordings at night with the Realme 7, which is decent for the price range. The wide angle suffers from insufficient image sharpness, users should forget about macro and depth sensors right away – macro shots with only 2 megapixels are simply not sharp enough to look even remotely fascinating. The front camera takes usable selfies. Videos can be recorded in 4K, but 30 Frames per second final, what the picture sharpness greatly lowers when panning. Otherwise, the image quality is good, but interested parties shouldn’t expect too much from the image stabilization.

All original recordings with the realme 7 5G (22 Photos) Furnishing Chipsets of the Dimensity series from Mediatek have not yet been used in smartphones that were intended for the German market – why not? It cannot be due to the performance, because it is the built-in Dimensity 800 exemplary for those not significantly above the 128 – RRP of the Realme 7 5G. With eight clocked up to 2.4 GHz (4 × Cortex-A 76 and 4 × Cortex-A 55) CPUs, a technology called HyperEngine, which should bring more performance in games and an ARM-G 57 – GPU wants manufacturer Mediatek the Snapdragon 765 Take aim at G – and that basically works quite well. In conjunction with 6 GB of RAM, the Realme 7 5G achieves around 330. 00 0 points and thus a lead over models with the Snapdragon 765 of good 40. 00 0 points.

In other benchmarks like 3DMark Wild Life it looks a little different again seems to be mainly due to the GPU performance. For users, this head-to-head race between the two chip manufacturers offers one thing above all else: a lot of performance for little money. You can see that with the Realme 7 5G in everyday life. On the great overall impression, the supple 120 – Hz rendering of the screen a good part, but also starting apps is quick and multitasking is hardly a problem for the smartphone. Only hard-core gamers should, as always, use a smartphone with a top chipset like the Snapdragon 865, all others are made with the 7 nanometer dimensity 800 happy.

Otherwise there is everything a mid-range smartphone needs to have: LTE with all bands commonly used in Germany (including band 20) WLAN ac, Bluetooth 5.1, USB C, GPS and of course 5G – with 5G excellent for arguing, because the network coverage in Germany is still rather weak. In positive terms. The fingerprint sensor in the power button on the right works very quickly and reliably, the mono speaker sounds a bit tinny, but is otherwise decent.

Android 10 serves as the basis for Realme OS, which Oppos ColorOS builds. The interface looks tidy and clear and offers some additional functions such as extended adaptability of the design and shape of app icons. The security patch is from October and is current enough at the time of testing at the end of November. For the Realme 7 and the Pro model, Realme has an update to Android 11 promised that it should come this year. It should be similar with the 5G model. So far, Realme was considered pleasantly reliable.

Battery The battery the Realme 7 5G is based on the Realme 7 instead of the Pro – that has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is the one with 5000 mAh slightly higher capacity (4500 mAh in the Pro model), disadvantage 30- instead of 65 – Watt fast charging. And there is another advantage: The Dimensity – 800 – chipset is in the modern 7-millimeter process made and therefore more energy efficient than the Helio G 95 with his 12 nanometers. Accordingly, it is hardly surprising that the Realme 7 5G with its configuration in PCmark’s battery test on proud 11, 5 hours comes – mind you in automatic mode, in which the smartphone independently switches between 60 and 120 Hz decides.

That is a very decent value, which is not only significantly better than the others Realme 7 models, but also ensures two days of running time in everyday life without “range fear”. The power donor of the 5G model is charged according to 30 minutes almost half, after hardly more than the battery is full again in about an hour. There is no wireless charging – that would be a novelty in this price range.

Price The Realme 7 5G is only available in blue and in the tested version with 6 / 128 GByte memory.

Conclusion 5G is in Germany as of November 2020 still no purchase criterion for smartphones – even if network operators like to present it differently. Therefore, 5G should not be the only reason to buy the Realme 7 5G. The device has other advantages to offer that make it better than its namesake. There would be something like that 120 – Hz display and the chipset is a power in comparison to the current Realme 7 trio. This not only improves performance (and brings 5G with it), but also ensures better runtimes – a win-win situation, so to speak.

Interested parties have to cut back on the camera – it does during the day and even still decent pictures at night, but that’s better for a little more money. Especially the nonsensical constellation with 2-megapixel macro and depth sensor only looks good on the data sheet, but does not help in everyday life. If you can basically make friends with the smartphone, but are looking for other details, you should definitely take a look at Realme 7 (test report) and Realme 7 Pro (test report). Otherwise it is worth taking a look at the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC (test report).
