Apple makes the iPhone purchase decision more difficult: For a long time there was only one flagship model from the manufacturer, now there are four variants. Fortunately, core components such as the fast A > as for the first time also the use of OLED displays.

Display and processor In terms of processor performance, the entry-level models iPhone 12 mini and 12 no compromises compared to the more expensive Pro models. However, the Pro models have more RAM with 6 GB. The screens of the two Pro models 11 Pro and Pro Max can be equipped with around 800 Candela / m2 shine brighter than iPhone 12 and 12 mini (good 600 Candela / m2), like the detailed test of all new iPhone – 12 – model series from Mac & i revealed. When displaying HDR photos, the calibrated luminance measuring device gave similarly high values for both Pro and Non-Pro models of 940 Candela / m2 from.

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are now identical in terms of dimensions, both have a 6.1 “display , the Pro model is noticeably heavier – and compared to its predecessor 11 Pro is also a bit bigger. With the 12 mini, Apple has again an unusually small smartphone in its range that hardly makes any compromises in terms of specifications. It’s even smaller and lighter than Apple’s 4.7 “iPhone SE 2, but with a diagonal of 5.4” it offers more space for content. With its new, more angular design and compact construction, it is reminiscent of the iPhone 5. The 12 Pro Max is barely larger than its already huge predecessor, but it still feels great thanks to the angular case slightly more voluminous.

More differences in the iPhone camera The bottom line is that the 2020 iPhones differ – in addition to the size and weight differences – mainly in terms of battery life and camera system. With the non-Pro versions, Apple does without the telephoto and optical zoom, they offer wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras. The Pro Max also stands out clearly from the smaller Pro model: Instead of a 52 – mm telephoto lens is in the largest iPhone now a 65 – mm telephoto with a 2.5x optical zoom. The Max also differs in that it has a larger sensor, which among other things reduced noise on recordings – an advantage especially in low light.

In all iPhone – 12 – Variants have a smaller battery than the 2019 he models, in direct comparison to the very long-lasting predecessors, the runtimes were sometimes significantly shorter – although the iPhone 12 mini could do quite well and should last a whole day with moderate use.

The detailed test report of all new iPhone – 12 – You can read models from mini to Pro Max on heise + and in Mac & i issue 6 / 2020, which will be available from December 3rd.
